Thepassionforflyingcontinues! After a long innings of 24 years in the Indian Air Force, flying the mighty Sukhoi 30MKI, Senior First
Officer Anurag Sharma is happy to join the AirAsia family.
Senior First Officer Anurag
Sharma joined the AirAsia
family in May 2017, after a long
innings of 24 years as a fighter
pilot in the Indian Air Force. On
October 8, 2017, he was awarded
the prestigious Presidential
Award of Vishisht Seva Medal for
dedicated service of a very high
order. Every year on January
26, i.e. India’s Republic Day, the
President bestows such awards
on a few selected officers of the
defence forces at an investiture
ceremony held on Air Force Day.
A proud moment indeed!
passion for flying Born
and brought up in New Delhi,
Anurag developed an early
passion for flying when he saw

Seva Medal.
over the Republic Day parade
that he attended as an eight-
year-old. His dreams turned into
reality when he was awarded
his wings on December 18, 1993
and was commissioned into
the Indian Air Force as a fighter
pilot. In the IAF, Anurag flew a
variety of aircraft, including the
state-of-the-art Sukhoi 30MKI!
shift to civil aviation
To the aviator, the sky provides
a unique sense of comfort,
security and belonging. The
sound of the engines roaring,
the ground rapidly moving away,
diving through the soft clouds
against blue skies surpass all
pleasures of life. Once Anurag’s
active flying days in the Air Force
were over, adjusting to a desk job
was a difficult proposition for the
aviator within! The shift to the
world of civil aviation seemed a
natural decision. “The choice to
join AirAsia was a no brainier!
When I came for the interview to
the AirAsia office, the warmth,
the homely environment, the
positives vibes just floored me!”
says Anurag.
“I was hoping the company
would select me to be one
amongst them! I’m glad they did!
The sight of the boldly painted
aircraft, the energetic crew
and the smiling corporate clan
ever willing to help is a great
culture to be a part of. After 24
years of being a part of Air Force,
nothing could have been better
than this. I look forward to a
long and beautiful innings with
the organisation and hope to be
an integral part of the AirAsia
family,” he signs off.
outside the cockpit
Anurag likes to spend time with
his family. He is also a keen
sportsman and enjoys playing
golf, cricket and squash. He
likes to travel, meet new people
and absorb different cultures.
He dreams of one day taking a
road trip from India to Thailand
and Malaysia, and perhaps even
traverse the Silk Route!

AirAsiaGroupCEOLaunchesMemoirsTan Sri Tony Fernandes launches Flying High autobiography at a gala event.
AirAsia Group CEO Tan Sri Tony
Fernandes said,“Flying High is a
story about the power of dreams.
When I first started AirAsia with
Datuk Kamarudin, everyone
thought we were crazy. They said
we had no business running an air-
line and it wouldn’t work. If we had
listened to them, we would have
given up before we even started
and this book wouldn’t exist.”
Flying High recounts Tan Sri
Tony Fernandes’journey from a
young boy growing up in Malaysia
to a homesick British boarding
school student with a tuck box full
of dreams, all the way to his time at
Warner Music and finally as AirAsia
chief - with plenty of stops in
between. Learn about what drives
Tan Sri Tony Fernandes and the
moments that shaped him, includ-
ing a chance encounter with Virgin
Group founder, Sir Richard Branson
that eventually led to Fernandes’
first job out of university.
This book is an inspiring story of
an exceptional business leader who
created Asia’s first budget airline
and democratised air travel in Asia,
building AirAsia into a multi-billion-
dollar company in the process.
Retailing at `1330 (inclusive

Tell us something about
your love for tigers. Around
14 years ago, I went on my first
jungle safari in Corbett National
Park, and all it took was a glimpse
of this magnificent cat to get me
hooked. It was a trigger for me
to leave a corporate career and
follow tigers through the forests
of India. It has been an enriching
experience as every day of my
life is fresh and interesting. I feel
blessed to be born in a country
where we have access, albeit
limited, to this elusive jungle cat.
What’s special about A
Decade with Tigers? I am not a
tiger expert, just a photographer
who spends nearly 300 days a
year in the field observing and
documenting the behaviour
of these cats. A Decade with
Tigers is a tribute to this iconic
animal that is the true global
ambassador of Indian wildlife.
You have mentioned a lot
of tigers in the book. Do
you have a favourite? The
opening chapter of the book is
on Vijaya, a one-eyed tigress
from Bandhavgarh National Park,
Madhya Pradesh. It was while
CHASING
TAILSShivang Mehta, a
former journalist and
PR professional, left his
corporate job to pursue
his passion for wildlife
and photography. In his
latest book, A Decade
with Tigers, he gives us
a photographer’s take on
the positive rise in tiger
conservation efforts
over the past decade. He
speaks to travel 3Sixtyo
on life with tigers,
and beyond.
Having the
opportunity to use
imagery as a medium

wildlife.

watching her that I became
emotionally involved and decided
to track one tiger family closely.
Initially, Vijaya was shunned by
photographers because she was
blind in one eye and was not
considered ‘photogenic’. However,
when she gave birth to cubs, she
became the centre of attraction in
Bandhavgarh.
What is your driving force?
I never have a monotonous work
day because in the field, there
are surprises all the time. This
unpredictability and the need for
constant vigilance to document
once-in-a-lifetime moments is
something that keeps me going.
Who has been your biggest
inspiration? Photography is
an art and over the years, the
works of many photographers
have inspired me. Ganesh H
Shankar and Jagdeep Rajput
have been guiding lights who
have constantly analysed
my work and pointed me in
the right direction. Globally,
I admire the creativity of
photographers like Art Wolfe
and Nick Brandt.
Which gear do you prefer?
I use Canon gear and over the
years have equipped myself
with five camera bodies and
five lenses. A DSLR camera
trapping is the new genre that I
am exploring.
What makes you different
from other wildlife
photographers? Over the
years, I think I have developed a
signature style. I love capturing
nature in black and white and
creating motion blurs.
Which is your favourite
destination to shoot at
and why? Corbett has a mixed
habitat and an abundance of
light which, I feel, makes it ideal
for photography.
What’s running through
your mind when you’re
shooting in the jungle? Life
as a wildlife photographer is very
hectic. When I’m in the field, my
mind is constantly thinking of
frames and compositions in an
endeavour to look at nature from
a fresh perspective.
What advice do you have
for novice photographers?
It is important to move beyond
the equipment debate and focus
on photography as an art. There
is so much focus on what to buy,
which brand and the technical
aspects of photography. But
the reality is that nothing beats
field work. Hone your skills as a
cameraman first.

towards him and Velu greeted
him enthusiastically.
‘Ayan Sir! So much you have
grown. I saw you when you
were about this high,’ he said
extending his hand out at his
waist level.
As the car sped towards
Thekke Madom, Ayan found
himself relaxing more and
more. Kerala was beautiful.
Ayan remembered the vacation
that he had taken here once,
when he was a child. His
father had sent him to stay
at Thekke Madom. His cousin
Nithya too had been sent. They
had created unforgettable
memories, catching fish in the
pond and putting them in glass
jars; climbing mango trees
and eating the raw mangoes
with chilli powder and salt;
borrowing Velu’s cycle which
was too big for them, and yet
riding it expertly, standing
up on the pedals, for if they
sat on the seat, their legs
wouldn’t reach the pedals. Ayan
remembered the fragrance of
pepper and cardamom, and the
sweet taste of the mulberries
that they had plucked from the
mulberry tree. He remembered
the deep red jambu10 fruits that
they used to pluck and eat, and
his mouth watered.
‘Velu chetta, are the jambu
fruit trees and the mulberry
trees still there?’ he asked.
‘Ooooh, yes. Nowadays we
sell it all at the weekly bazaar as
there is no one to eat them. We
have a surplus. You can eat all
you want!’ Velu answered.
‘Oh lovely,’ said Ayan, and he
felt like a little boy again.
Gopal Shanker was waiting
for them on the verandah, as
the car pulled up. Ayan got out
of the car and walked towards
him. He was shocked to see how
old he looked. It seemed like his
grandfather had aged a lot, since
the last time Ayan had seen him.
He still had his mop of white
hair though. He was frail and
he seemed to have lost a lot of
weight. Gopal Shanker frowned.
‘Muttacha, it’s me, Ayan,’ said
Ayan, as he greeted him.
Gopal Shanker stared at him,
as though trying to ascertain
that he was not dreaming. Then
his face broke into a smile.
‘Why did you have to come all
the way here? I can manage fine
with Velu,’ he said.
‘I wanted to spend a few days
with you,’ said Ayan.

among athletes in the world. Find out who else is on this esteemed list.
Talk about records and milestones

that comes to mind after Sachin

Indian team captain, Virat Kohli. In
October 2017, during the opening

legendary Australian captain
Ricky Ponting to become the
second highest century-maker in
One-Day Internationals (ODI). He
is now second only to Tendulkar,
who amassed 49 ODI hundreds.
Kohli’s success is mounting with
each passing day.
Recently, Kohli achieved another
milestone, but this one was off the
field. Kohli outranked Argentina
and Barcelona star footballer
Lionel Messi on the American
business magazine Forbes’list

sportspersons. Forbes calculates
the brand value of an athlete by
subtracting the average income
of the top 10 athletes in the same
sport from the total earnings of that
athlete, excluding salary and bonus
from their sport and all investment
income. The calculations estimated
Kohli’s brand value at a staggering
USD 14.5 million, a million dollars
more than Messi. Let’s have a look

Above Kannur is
famous for theyyam,
a ritualistic traditional
dance form of Kerala.
It is characterised by
heavy makeup and
elaborate costumes.
TheLandofTheyyamBeautiful beaches, seaside forts, a unique dance form and leisurely
vibes – Kannur in Kerala has several rich experiences to offer its visitors.
Kannur is a hidden gem in northern
Kerala. Ruled by feisty dynasties such
as the Kolathiris and the Arakkals,
Kannur’s history is replete with stories
of the spice trade and spirited battles
between the local rules and European
colonisers. This quaint town is also
home to some beautiful beaches and
picturesque forts, which enhance the
charm of this destination.
Mustsee/Do
Kannur Fort (Fort St. Angelo)
Built in 1505, Kannur Fort was
constructed by the first Portuguese
Viceroy, Don Francesco de Almeida.
The grand sea-facing ramparts,
the tunnels and dungeons and
the ruins of a chapel situated in
the Kannur Fort are evocative of a
colourful history.
Arakkal Museum The Arakkal
dynasty ruled over the erstwhile
principality of Kannur for a long
period of time. Their old residence
is now a museum, with several
interesting memorabilia. Antique
furniture, a Belgian mirror, stained
glass windows, sepia photographs
and copies of treaties signed by the
Arakkals are among the articles
housed here. The photos depicting
the maritime connections of Kannur
with the Dutch, Portuguese and
English are particularly intriguing.
Theyyam This fascinating dance
form is native to the Kannur region
of Kerala. Male dancers in colourful
headgear dance with great fervour in
the forecourt of temples, seemingly
oblivious to their surroundings.
Theyyam is a tribute to the animist
and tribal influences of ancient
Kerala. Several performances are held
between November and May here.

Thalassery biryani One of the
several different kinds of biryani
available in India, the thalassery
version is commonly found in
the Kannur-Thalassery belt. The
difference in taste comes mainly
from the short-grained kaima or
jeerakasala rice it is based in, as
opposed to the basmati rice used to
make most other varieties of biryani.
Cashewnuts, raisins and spices

biryani is mostly made with chicken

with mussels is also available here.

a mixture of cashew nuts, raisins

I
have been a passionate trekker for as long
as I can remember. There’s something
about the physical exertion, clean air,
and being around nature that makes it
so exhilarating. The view once you get to
the top of a mountain is as humbling as
it is rewarding! Nothing more can make you
realise how small you are in this world than
standing on top of it and looking down. So
when I heard about the Chanderkhani trail
in Himachal Pradesh, I just had to go. I was
meant to travel with a friend who unfortu-
nately had to drop out at the last minute due
to unforeseen circumstances. I had already
made my bookings, and having travelled solo
earlier, I decided that it was probably meant
to be this way. I was slightly nervous about
being by myself, but the moment I reached
the base camp, I knew I’d made the right call
to come alone after all.
To get to my destination, I took a flight from
Bengaluru to Chandigarh, followed by a night
bus to Manali, a local bus to Seobhag, and
finally a long walk to the base camp. Phew! The
image:AnujaPrabhu
52 DEC2017
trek was organised by the YHAI (Youth Hostels
Association of India) Trekking Group, and
although I had journeyed there alone, I did not
feel lonely at all once I arrived at the base camp.
The YHAI trek was well organised. They gave
us three days to acclimatise and began the
actual trek on the fourth day of the camp. The
climb up to this 13,800ft mountain was spaced
out over the next seven days. We camped at
gorgeous spots, surrounded by lush coniferous
trees, pretty brooks bubbling and gushing
nearby. We passed the famous village of Malana,
where the locals believe themselves to be the
descendants of Alexander the Great. You are not
allowed to touch or photograph anything they
consider sacred unless you want to evoke their
ire and be slapped with a huge fine. We met
friendly locals, many of whom make a living
by serving hot tea and ready-to-eat noodles to
trekkers under makeshift tents.
On the penultimate day, we made it to the
summit. After walking a narrow path and
crossing a chasm over a tightrope bridge,
with the help and skill of the Sherpas, I finally
made it to the top, and it was breathtaking.
The sun was shining in a cloudless, blue sky,
the light reflecting off a sheet of sparkling,
white snow. It was a beautiful day to be on
top of the world. While the ascent had been
challenging, the descent was even more so.
I had to sit on top of a ridge and then slide
down several hundred feet of snow! The
excitement of it kept my pulse racing long
after coming to a halt.
After the descent, we made it back to the
base camp within a day. I said goodbye to
my new friends and continued on my solo
journey. I stayed in Manali for a few days
and visited the Solang Valley where I went
paragliding. I visited the hot springs of
Vashisht and the famed Hidimba temple. I
shopped for souvenirs on the last day of my
travel. Even though I enjoyed this precious
me-time, I was cautious and completed
all my trips by sundown. I kept my phone
fully charged and fed in my hotel contact
details so that they could provide assistance
if I needed it. I would advise other solo
travellers to mark out the routes and terrain
on a map before leaving for a trip. Who
needs a real map when you have GPS, right?
But a word to the wise – the mountains are
known for many things but great network
isn’t one of them. If you’re stranded, a
physical map is your best bet. So, make the
time and learn to read one if you’re serious
about travelling solo.
Solo travel seems scary, but the more
you do it, the more you start to trust in
your own resilience and resourcefulness.
It helps you see just how much you enjoy
your own company. There’s a sense of
accomplishment that stays with you long
after the trip has ended.

T

tiny dot on the south-west coast of
India, Goa has a lot to offer its visitors
throughout the year. Come December,
Goa turns into a party zone, with tourists
flocking its beaches and clubs, often coming
in from various parts of the globe. With
beach parties, art fests, jazz shows, midnight
masses and EDM nights, you can get a taste
of everything in Goa!
The Two Faces of Goa Goa is divided
into two distinctive zones: North Goa, the
famed party haven, and South Goa, which
has more serene and peaceful environs.
As such, South Goa is home to some of the
most luxurious resort properties spread
over hundreds of acres, while its northern
counterpart plays host largely to economical
homestays and hostels, meant to appeal to a
younger, more experimental audience.
Given this very clear division, the beach of
either part display characteristics typical to
their geography. Baga, Calangute and Anjuna,
beaches located in North Goa, are more crowded
at any given time of year, with hundreds of
shacks lining their shores. Palolem beach in

below Local fishing boats docked at Baga
beach, North Goa. It is common to spot such
colourful boats on Goa’s beaches as fishing is a
major source of livelihood here.
South Goa, on the other hand, is incontrovertibly
cleaner and calmer than its sisters to the north.
Arambol, situated about 34 km north of
Panaji, the capital of Goa, is one of the less
commercialised beaches in North Goa, a rarity
in itself. It is not as crowded and is therefore a
good place to go if you’re craving solitude.
Morjim beach in the north is known for
its population of the Olive Ridley sea turtle.
Sadly, with increasing tourist traffic in the
area, spotting these water babies has become
more difficult. But you can find all sorts of
party animals here as Morjim is famous for
its hip parties.
Where North Goa is a party port, South
Goa is known for water sports and adventure
activities. One can go for jungle treks at
the Cotiago Wildlife Sanctuary and catch a
glimpse of animals like sloth bears, panthers,
hyenas and monkeys. This part of Goa also has
some amazing rock faces, making it a paradise

I am beginning to love these gaps between

more! That so much more honestly means
more travel. You can take me anywhere
under the sun. I love holidaying - and not
just luxury vacations, but even road trips or
backpacking. My parents never pampered or
overindulged me or my brothers. We used to
travel in autos; I used to take the local train
to college because my dad said I must have
that experience. It doesn't matter as long as I
am going on a holiday. When I’m on holiday, it
means total relaxation.
I love the United States of America because
there is so much to do. I spent a lot of time
in the US recently during and after the
International Indian Film Academy (IIFA)
awards because there was work too. But I was
lucky I could squeeze in several getaways
because I was shooting somewhere or the
other in the US itself. I went on quite a few
road trips and had a chance to discover a
side of America I wasn't familiar with. I also

I love Paris - it’s
always buzzing
with fashion and
romance. London
is also good for
shopping, while
the Middle East
has the best of
everything.
The best thing I enjoy doing dur ing
vacations is pampering myself; I am addicted
to massages and spas. I am particularly
fond of head massages. I will always ask
for a masseur to do a head massage to test
whether or not they're good. I was shooting
for Dabangg at the Al Maha Desert Resort
and Spa in Dubai and had the most luxuriant
head massage there. I felt too guilty. Imagine
a head massage with almond oil in the
morning, coconut oil hair baths and then a
fragrant neroli oil after pack up. I felt totally
indulged. Talking about the Middle East, I
also love Oman, where we shot some portions
of Once Upon A Time in Mumbai 2. It's very
opulent, rich and relatable. Not many of us
have discovered the scenic beauty of this
country. It's a lovely place and I really had
a good time when I was there. We stayed
at the Shangri-La's Barr Al Jissah Resort
Spa. We did everything from water sports
and beach volleyball to admiring the rock
formations in the clear blue waters. The place
is visually stunning. The food is to die for as
well! I love the way they cook everything in
olive oil to make it rich and you can pig out
as much as you like.
On a solo trip to the Seychelles I discovered
why it is a beach lover's paradise. Right from
swimming in the sea to scuba diving, I did it
all in this small but spectacular country.
In India, I discovered my favour ite
de s t i n at ion t h a n k s t o V i k r a m ad it y a
Motwane who directed Lootera. While
shooting for the film in January 2012, the
set of the film erected in Dalhousie was
destroyed due to bad weather. The weather
forced the crew to trek through knee-
high snow. We had to shoot some scenes
at Kalatop, close to Dalhousie. It is such a
romantic and scenic place! I loved every bit
of shooting here.
There are so many destinations that I like,
so it’s difficult to pick just one! I love Paris –
it’s always buzzing with fashion and romance.
London is also good for shopping, while the
Middle East has the best of everything.
An ideal vacation is time reserved just
for me or my family, though it doesn't
happen often that all of us can take holidays
together. I think I am going to start badgering
my folks to star t planning a getaway
after this interview!

shopping! From flea markets that sell beautiful
handicrafts and offer amazing bargains to
luxury stores. My mom jokes that the next
time we travel there, she will put me on a

Held every year in the first week of December
in the Kisama village of Nagaland, the Hornbill
festival is a celebration of the kaleidoscopic
cultural heritage of the Naga tribes that inhabit the

C
overed with dense tropical and
subtropical forests, the hills of Nagaland
are home to several diverse tribes, each
with a distinct language, attire and
festival. Every Naga tribe celebrates
different festivals at different times of
the year. But come December, Kohima, the
capital city of Nagaland, becomes a melting
pot of culture and heritage with the Hornbill
festival. This festival is organised by the
State Directorate of Tourism of Nagaland
to promote the richness of Naga traditions.
Diverse Naga tribes showcase the best of their
heritage ranging from folk dance and music to
traditional Naga wrestling and culinary skills.
Cultural extravaganza During
the festival, various facets of Naga life are
displayed through cultural dances, plays
and competitions. The Nagas, dressed in
their traditional tribal attire, headgear and
jewellery, dance to the tunes of songs that
detail their everyday chores and celebrate
their agrarian roots, describing toiling in the
field and sowing the harvest. Some songs are
a motivational call to war with reverberating
beats to scare the enemies away, taking you
back to the times when the tribes actively
pursued headhunting (a tribe which is known
to take back heads of their kill, deciding on
their status in their respective tribe).
The Naga Heritage Village is well-designed
to accommodate hundreds of participants
and thousands of visitors. While the main
arena is a good spot to watch the folk-
dance performances, you should not miss
the stadium next door where the wrestling
matches take place. Naga style wrestling has
its own rules and is a sight to watch, with
colourfully dressed Naga wrestlers jostling
for the title.
Food files One of most interesting
aspects of the Hornbill festival is the
morungs (dormitories) of the tribes. Morungs
are the traditional community halls that
are used as a meeting place for the village
men. Each tribe participating in the Hornbill
festival creates their morung in the Heritage
Village as well as a community kitchen,
and put up stalls of authentic Naga food
for visitors. People can relish a variety of
non-vegetarian dishes that are served with
tea made of sticky rice. The food choices
available for visitors vary from traditional
Naga food to more mainstream North Indian

Travel tale While visiting the Hornbill
festival, visitors must travel to the nearby Naga
villages to get a glimpse of their culture and
heritage. The Khonoma village inhabited by the
Angami tribe is a good place to start. My visit
here was enriching, and as I walked around,
some locals were kind enough to offer me a cup
of piping hot tea at the village morung. Every
house was surrounded by colourful flowers and
the village was spotlessly clean.
Your next stop should be the Kohima
War Cemetery, situated at a distance of 11
kilometres from the Kisama village. Here,
the soldiers who lost their lives during the
Second World War were laid to rest. The
cemetery also houses a memorial to the
soldiers who died defending Kohima in the
war. It is an important landmark in the city
and is maintained by the Commonwealth War
Graves Commission.

dishes. Those who like to experiment can
try dishes like fried silkworm larvae, boiled
snails and other local delicacies. Be careful
though, because you may just bite into the
famous bhut jolokia, (also known as ghost
pepper cultivated especially in Nagaland),
which is said to be one of the hottest chillis
in the world. The same chilli is the major
highlight of the famous chilli eating contests
where participants compete to see who can
eat the most peppers in a set time limit.
The famed Nagaland coffee is also available
at the Nagaland Coffee Board stall at the
Heritage Village.
Festival attractions Reserve your
evening to witness the grand Rock festival
hosted dur ing the festival in Kohima.
Nagaland is home to some of the best rock
bands and this festival highlights famous, as
well as lesser-known local groups. Another
vibrant aspect is the famous Kohima Night
Bazaar, which is a special attraction for the
tourists attending the festival. This market
is set up for a week during the festival, and
is all about food, music and frolic. Walk
through the stalls and taste the finest
delicacies of the state.
Apart from the tribal performances and
wrestling matches, indigenous craft and
handicraft fairs are held in the village

Whether on a short or a long-haul journey, flying
can be a pleasant experience if you are well-
prepared. Here are some simple steps to ensure
you have a safe, smooth and comfortable journey.
JoyofFlying
StayHydrated
Aircraft cabins are generally very
dry due to which dehydration can
occur easily. To overcome this:
Drink lots of water but
ensure the intake is slow and
regular. Drinking too much
water suddenly will cause the
body to expel water quickly,
forcing you to visit the toilet
frequently.
Dry eyes can aggravate with
dry atmosphere. Bring along
lubricating eye drops and use
when required. Also, ditch
contact lenses and opt for
spectacles while on flight.
Even your skin needs
hydration. Apply
moisturiser or a body spritzer
on exposed body
parts to stay hydrated.
Keeptea, coffee and
alcohol intake to a minimum.
Foot Pumps Keeping both heels
on the floor, point feet upwards
as high as you can. Return feet to
earlier position. Then, lift heels while
keeping the balls of your feet on the
floor. Repeat the exercise as desired.
Simply walking up and down
the aircraft aisle a few times or
performing a few tip toes or
light stretching can help blood
circulation.
InflightExercises
Especially on longer flights, we suggest
you perform these simple exercises to
keep yourself energised.
Shoulder Lifts Gently lift
your right shoulder and lower the
left one simultaneously. Repeat
the movement five times by
alternating between shoulders.
Knee Lifts Lift knee up toward
your chest and hold the position
for 10 seconds. Gently lower knee
and repeat with the other leg.
Repeat the exercise as desired.
Deep Vein Thrombosis DVT can occur
when a blood clot forms in the large veins of
legs or arms, partially or completely blocking
blood circulation. Sitting still and inactivity
during long flights may lead to the occurrence
of DVT. If you are flying long distance, please
ensure you perform inflight exercises listed
above as a precaution against developing DVT.
When possible and permissible, stretch your
legs and walk along the aisle. Beware of early
symptoms like pain or swelling in legs.
Popping Ears Changes in
air pressure or altitude cause our
ears to‘pop’and sometimes ache
during take-offs and landings. For a
comfortable flying experience, chew
sweets or mimic the
act of chewing and
swallowing if you do
not have any available
with you. This will relieve the
discomfort and help stabilise
the pressure in the ear canals.
Pacifiers will work just as well for
toddlers. If you have cold, use a nasal
decongestant to clear your nasal
passage and alleviate the ache.
To counter the effects
of jetlag, get as much
sleep as possible when
flying west to east.
When flying in the
reverse direction, try and stay awake.
AirAsia’s chic Snug-as-a-bug
hoodie keeps you cosy with its neck
pillow attached to a soft hooded collar.

  • 16. Thepassionforflyingcontinues! After a long innings of 24 years in the Indian Air Force, flying the mighty Sukhoi 30MKI, Senior First Officer Anurag Sharma is happy to join the AirAsia family. Senior First Officer Anurag Sharma joined the AirAsia family in May 2017, after a long innings of 24 years as a fighter pilot in the Indian Air Force. On October 8, 2017, he was awarded the prestigious Presidential Award of Vishisht Seva Medal for dedicated service of a very high order. Every year on January 26, i.e. India’s Republic Day, the President bestows such awards on a few selected officers of the defence forces at an investiture ceremony held on Air Force Day. A proud moment indeed! passion for flying Born and brought up in New Delhi, Anurag developed an early passion for flying when he saw fighter jets flying fast and low above Anurag Sharma (first from right) receiving the prestigious Presidential Award, the Vishisht Seva Medal. over the Republic Day parade that he attended as an eight- year-old. His dreams turned into reality when he was awarded his wings on December 18, 1993 and was commissioned into the Indian Air Force as a fighter pilot. In the IAF, Anurag flew a variety of aircraft, including the state-of-the-art Sukhoi 30MKI! shift to civil aviation To the aviator, the sky provides a unique sense of comfort, security and belonging. The sound of the engines roaring, the ground rapidly moving away, diving through the soft clouds against blue skies surpass all pleasures of life. Once Anurag’s active flying days in the Air Force were over, adjusting to a desk job was a difficult proposition for the aviator within! The shift to the world of civil aviation seemed a natural decision. “The choice to join AirAsia was a no brainier! When I came for the interview to the AirAsia office, the warmth, the homely environment, the positives vibes just floored me!” says Anurag. “I was hoping the company would select me to be one amongst them! I’m glad they did! The sight of the boldly painted aircraft, the energetic crew and the smiling corporate clan ever willing to help is a great culture to be a part of. After 24 years of being a part of Air Force, nothing could have been better than this. I look forward to a long and beautiful innings with the organisation and hope to be an integral part of the AirAsia family,” he signs off. outside the cockpit Anurag likes to spend time with his family. He is also a keen sportsman and enjoys playing golf, cricket and squash. He likes to travel, meet new people and absorb different cultures. He dreams of one day taking a road trip from India to Thailand and Malaysia, and perhaps even traverse the Silk Route! Fuellingthepassion www.travel3sixty.com 14 DEC2017

  • 18. travel3Sixty°Turns10In October, travel 3Sixty° celebrated a decade of travel adventures and unveiled a brand new look of the main edition of AirAsia Berhad. This year was a great milestone for travel 3Sixty°. The Regional team celebrated 10 years of chronicling travel adventures across the AirAsia network, and unveiled an edgy new look at a special three-day carnival held at Fahrenheit 88, Kuala Lum- pur, Malaysia, from October 6 to 8. There to officially reveal the magazine’s new look – which includes fresh content, a new masthead, enhanced branding and a cleaner layout – was Datuk Kama- rudin Meranun, Executive Chairman of AirAsia Berhad and Group CEO of AirAsia X, who is also the publisher of travel 3Sixty°. Also in attendance were Aireen Oman, CEO of AirAsia Malaysia, and Benyamin Ismail, CEO of AirAsia X Malaysia. The carnival, conceptualised to reflect a walk through the award- winning magazine, boasted booths operated by the magazine’s advertis- ers, as well as AirAsia’s ancillary businesses and partners, making for a fun-filled affair. Carnival-goers walked away with fantastic prizes including cash vouchers worth MYR 4,000 from AirAsia Go; 300,000 BIG Points courtesy of BIG Loyalty; passes to attractions in the Gold Coast, like SkyPoint Observation Deck, Dreamworld andWhiteWater World, as well as seven-day unlim- ited passes toWarner Bros. Also available at the event were exclusive AirAsia merchandise, including specialty t-shirts inspired by AirAsia pilot and cabin crew uniforms, with proceeds from sales channelled to MAKNA (National Cancer Council of Malaysia). To complement the magazine’s make over, the magazine’s newly revamped website travel3Sixty.com was also officially relaunched at the same event. AirAsia Group CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes said,“Flying High is a story about the power of dreams. When I first started AirAsia with Datuk Kamarudin, everyone thought we were crazy. They said we had no business running an air- line and it wouldn’t work. If we had listened to them, we would have given up before we even started and this book wouldn’t exist.” Flying High recounts Tan Sri Tony Fernandes’journey from a young boy growing up in Malaysia to a homesick British boarding school student with a tuck box full of dreams, all the way to his time at Warner Music and finally as AirAsia chief - with plenty of stops in between. Learn about what drives Tan Sri Tony Fernandes and the moments that shaped him, includ- ing a chance encounter with Virgin Group founder, Sir Richard Branson that eventually led to Fernandes’ first job out of university. This book is an inspiring story of an exceptional business leader who created Asia’s first budget airline and democratised air travel in Asia, building AirAsia into a multi-billion- dollar company in the process. Retailing at `1330 (inclusive of GST), Flying High can be pre- booked on bigdutyfree.com and on board AirAsia flights. A follow-up to Captain Lim’s first bestseller in 2013, Life in the Skies: Everything You Want To Know About Flying, his second book titled Sky Tales: More Insights from a Life in the Skies touches on a new collection of tips, anecdotes and insights into his distinguished flying career penned down in an entertaining and enlightening style. With a total of 25,500 flying hours over 80 destinations, Cap- tain Lim began flying with AirAsia Group in 2006 until his retirement in 2011. He is currently a flight simulator instructor with AirAsia X and a contributor for the Pilot Perspective column under the travel 3Sixty° magazine. “I am excited to continue my alltime dream of writing this se- quel by sharing more stories from my flying experience to people who are interested in learning more about the different aspects of air travel - be it aspiring pilots, frequent travellers or even fearful flyers,” said Captain Lim. • 34. Tell us something about your love for tigers. Around 14 years ago, I went on my first jungle safari in Corbett National Park, and all it took was a glimpse of this magnificent cat to get me hooked. It was a trigger for me to leave a corporate career and follow tigers through the forests of India. It has been an enriching experience as every day of my life is fresh and interesting. I feel blessed to be born in a country where we have access, albeit limited, to this elusive jungle cat. What’s special about A Decade with Tigers? I am not a tiger expert, just a photographer who spends nearly 300 days a year in the field observing and documenting the behaviour of these cats. A Decade with Tigers is a tribute to this iconic animal that is the true global ambassador of Indian wildlife. You have mentioned a lot of tigers in the book. Do you have a favourite? The opening chapter of the book is on Vijaya, a one-eyed tigress from Bandhavgarh National Park, Madhya Pradesh. It was while CHASING TAILSShivang Mehta, a former journalist and PR professional, left his corporate job to pursue his passion for wildlife and photography. In his latest book, A Decade with Tigers, he gives us a photographer’s take on the positive rise in tiger conservation efforts over the past decade. He speaks to travel 3Sixtyo on life with tigers, and beyond. Having the opportunity to use imagery as a medium to create awareness about nature and wildlife. Getting to know more about the natural world. Exploring remote locations and lesser- known cultures. Working in an inherently creative field Using technology to create new and fresh perspectives. watching her that I became emotionally involved and decided to track one tiger family closely. Initially, Vijaya was shunned by photographers because she was blind in one eye and was not considered ‘photogenic’. However, when she gave birth to cubs, she became the centre of attraction in Bandhavgarh. What is your driving force? I never have a monotonous work day because in the field, there are surprises all the time. This unpredictability and the need for constant vigilance to document once-in-a-lifetime moments is something that keeps me going. Who has been your biggest inspiration? Photography is an art and over the years, the works of many photographers have inspired me. Ganesh H Shankar and Jagdeep Rajput have been guiding lights who have constantly analysed my work and pointed me in the right direction. Globally, I admire the creativity of photographers like Art Wolfe and Nick Brandt. Which gear do you prefer? I use Canon gear and over the years have equipped myself with five camera bodies and five lenses. A DSLR camera trapping is the new genre that I am exploring. What makes you different from other wildlife photographers? Over the years, I think I have developed a signature style. I love capturing nature in black and white and creating motion blurs. Which is your favourite destination to shoot at and why? Corbett has a mixed habitat and an abundance of light which, I feel, makes it ideal for photography. What’s running through your mind when you’re shooting in the jungle? Life as a wildlife photographer is very hectic. When I’m in the field, my mind is constantly thinking of frames and compositions in an endeavour to look at nature from a fresh perspective. What advice do you have for novice photographers? It is important to move beyond the equipment debate and focus on photography as an art. There is so much focus on what to buy, which brand and the technical aspects of photography. But the reality is that nothing beats field work. Hone your skills as a cameraman first. 5bestthings aboutbeing awildlife photographer bookworm www.travel3sixty.com 32 DEC2017

So much you have grown. I saw you when you were about this high,’ he said extending his hand out at his waist level. As the car sped towards Thekke Madom, Ayan found himself relaxing more and more. Kerala was beautiful. Ayan remembered the vacation that he had taken here once, when he was a child. His father had sent him to stay at Thekke Madom. His cousin Nithya too had been sent. They had created unforgettable memories, catching fish in the pond and putting them in glass jars; climbing mango trees and eating the raw mangoes with chilli powder and salt; borrowing Velu’s cycle which was too big for them, and yet riding it expertly, standing up on the pedals, for if they sat on the seat, their legs wouldn’t reach the pedals. Ayan remembered the fragrance of pepper and cardamom, and the sweet taste of the mulberries that they had plucked from the mulberry tree. He remembered the deep red jambu10 fruits that they used to pluck and eat, and his mouth watered. ‘Velu chetta, are the jambu fruit trees and the mulberry trees still there?’ he asked. ‘Ooooh, yes. Nowadays we sell it all at the weekly bazaar as there is no one to eat them. We have a surplus. You can eat all you want!’ Velu answered. ‘Oh lovely,’ said Ayan, and he felt like a little boy again. Gopal Shanker was waiting for them on the verandah, as the car pulled up. Ayan got out of the car and walked towards him. He was shocked to see how old he looked. It seemed like his grandfather had aged a lot, since the last time Ayan had seen him. He still had his mop of white hair though. He was frail and he seemed to have lost a lot of weight. Gopal Shanker frowned. ‘Muttacha, it’s me, Ayan,’ said Ayan, as he greeted him. Gopal Shanker stared at him, as though trying to ascertain that he was not dreaming. Then his face broke into a smile. ‘Why did you have to come all the way here? I can manage fine with Velu,’ he said. ‘I wanted to spend a few days with you,’ said Ayan. TheLandofTheyyamBeautiful beaches, seaside forts, a unique dance form and leisurely vibes – Kannur in Kerala has several rich experiences to offer its visitors. Kannur is a hidden gem in northern Kerala. Ruled by feisty dynasties such as the Kolathiris and the Arakkals, Kannur’s history is replete with stories of the spice trade and spirited battles between the local rules and European colonisers. This quaint town is also home to some beautiful beaches and picturesque forts, which enhance the charm of this destination. Mustsee/Do Kannur Fort (Fort St. Angelo) Built in 1505, Kannur Fort was constructed by the first Portuguese Viceroy, Don Francesco de Almeida. The grand sea-facing ramparts, the tunnels and dungeons and the ruins of a chapel situated in the Kannur Fort are evocative of a colourful history. Arakkal Museum The Arakkal dynasty ruled over the erstwhile principality of Kannur for a long period of time. Their old residence is now a museum, with several interesting memorabilia. Antique furniture, a Belgian mirror, stained glass windows, sepia photographs and copies of treaties signed by the Arakkals are among the articles housed here. The photos depicting the maritime connections of Kannur with the Dutch, Portuguese and English are particularly intriguing. Theyyam This fascinating dance form is native to the Kannur region of Kerala. Male dancers in colourful headgear dance with great fervour in the forecourt of temples, seemingly oblivious to their surroundings. Cashewnuts, raisins and spices native to Kerala add to the taste. This biryani is mostly made with chicken or mutton, though a version made with mussels is also available here. Unnakkaya A snack prepared by stuffing mashed banana balls with a mixture of cashew nuts, raisins and rice flakes and then deep- frying them. This snack is unique to Kannur and nearby areas. • 54. I have been a passionate trekker for as long as I can remember. There’s something about the physical exertion, clean air, and being around nature that makes it so exhilarating. The view once you get to the top of a mountain is as humbling as it is rewarding! Nothing more can make you realise how small you are in this world than standing on top of it and looking down. So when I heard about the Chanderkhani trail in Himachal Pradesh, I just had to go. I was meant to travel with a friend who unfortu- nately had to drop out at the last minute due to unforeseen circumstances. I had already made my bookings, and having travelled solo earlier, I decided that it was probably meant to be this way. I was slightly nervous about being by myself, but the moment I reached the base camp, I knew I’d made the right call to come alone after all. To get to my destination, I took a flight from Bengaluru to Chandigarh, followed by a night bus to Manali, a local bus to Seobhag, and finally a long walk to the base camp. Phew! • 55. trek was organised by the YHAI (Youth Hostels Association of India) Trekking Group, and although I had journeyed there alone, I did not feel lonely at all once I arrived at the base camp. The YHAI trek was well organised. They gave us three days to acclimatise and began the actual trek on the fourth day of the camp. The climb up to this 13,800ft mountain was spaced out over the next seven days. We camped at gorgeous spots, surrounded by lush coniferous trees, pretty brooks bubbling and gushing nearby. We passed the famous village of Malana, where the locals believe themselves to be the descendants of Alexander the Great. You are not allowed to touch or photograph anything they consider sacred unless you want to evoke their ire and be slapped with a huge fine. We met friendly locals, many of whom make a living by serving hot tea and ready-to-eat noodles to trekkers under makeshift tents. On the penultimate day, we made it to the summit. After walking a narrow path and crossing a chasm over a tightrope bridge, with the help and skill of the Sherpas, I finally made it to the top, and it was breathtaking. The sun was shining in a cloudless, blue sky, the light reflecting off a sheet of sparkling, white snow. It was a beautiful day to be on top of the world. While the ascent had been challenging, the descent was even more so. I had to sit on top of a ridge and then slide down several hundred feet of snow! The excitement of it kept my pulse racing long after coming to a halt. After the descent, we made it back to the base camp within a day. I said goodbye to my new friends and continued on my solo journey. I stayed in Manali for a few days and visited the Solang Valley where I went paragliding. I visited the hot springs of Vashisht and the famed Hidimba temple. I shopped for souvenirs on the last day of my travel. Even though I enjoyed this precious me-time, I was cautious and completed all my trips by sundown. I kept my phone fully charged and fed in my hotel contact details so that they could provide assistance if I needed it. I would advise other solo travellers to mark out the routes and terrain on a map before leaving for a trip. Who needs a real map when you have GPS, right? But a word to the wise – the mountains are known for many things but great network isn’t one of them. If you’re stranded, a physical map is your best bet. So, make the time and learn to read one if you’re serious about travelling solo. Solo travel seems scary, but the more you do it, the more you start to trust in your own resilience and resourcefulness. It helps you see just how much you enjoy your own company. There’s a sense of accomplishment that stays with you long after the trip has ended. With beach parties, art fests, jazz shows, midnight masses and EDM nights, you can get a taste of everything in Goa! The Two Faces of Goa Goa is divided into two distinctive zones: North Goa, the famed party haven, and South Goa, which has more serene and peaceful environs. As such, South Goa is home to some of the most luxurious resort properties spread over hundreds of acres, while its northern counterpart plays host largely to economical homestays and hostels, meant to appeal to a younger, more experimental audience. Given this very clear division, the beach of either part display characteristics typical to their geography. You can take me anywhere under the sun. I love holidaying - and not just luxury vacations, but even road trips or backpacking. My parents never pampered or overindulged me or my brothers. We used to travel in autos; I used to take the local train to college because my dad said I must have that experience. It doesn't matter as long as I am going on a holiday. When I’m on holiday, it means total relaxation. I love the United States of America because there is so much to do. I spent a lot of time in the US recently during and after the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards because there was work too. But I was lucky I could squeeze in several getaways because I was shooting somewhere or the other in the US itself. I went on quite a few road trips and had a chance to discover a side of America I wasn't familiar with. I also thoroughly explored the length and breadth of New York City. From the Empire State Building to the Brooklyn Bridge, I had a ball! It wasn't just sightseeing, but also soaking in the culture of this multi-faceted city. So, I went to cafes, ice-cream parlours, discs et al. opposite page (above) Sonakshi loved exploring the azure waters of the Seychelles during an impromptu trip. opposite page (below) The beaches of Sentosa Island in Singapore are Sonakshi's favourite jaunt. below The Dudley Do- Right Ripsaw Falls ride at Universal Studios brings out the child in her. I went bananas at Universal Studios! I went sailing on the Hudson River and fell in love with San Francisco. Strolling down Lombard street was also a very nice experience. So now, if I am ever confused or want to go away on an impulse, I pick the USA. Singapore is also a quick getaway, perfect if you want a break from life and don’t have much time on your hands. You don't have to think much and can just pack your bags and go. There is so much I like about Singapore that I honestly don't know where to start! I love Sentosa Island, which thankfully is not far at all from the main city and serves as a huge recreational space where there is something for everyone. You can play golf, indulge in water sports, shop and of course, interact with wildlife. More than half the island is home to a spectacular range of wild animals - monitor lizards, monkeys, peacocks, parrots as well as other native fauna and flora. The huge stretch of clean beach has pristine white sands - I could set up a home for life there! Singapore is also one of the safest countries I have travelled to. There is great harmony between the races despite people from so many different parts of the world living there. There is even a special day - Racial Harmony Day, celebrated on July 21 - just to celebrate the harmony of the different races living together. Every Naga tribe celebrates different festivals at different times of the year. But come December, Kohima, the capital city of Nagaland, becomes a melting pot of culture and heritage with the Hornbill festival. This festival is organised by the State Directorate of Tourism of Nagaland to promote the richness of Naga traditions. Diverse Naga tribes showcase the best of their heritage ranging from folk dance and music to traditional Naga wrestling and culinary skills. Cultural extravaganza During the festival, various facets of Naga life are displayed through cultural dances, plays and competitions. The Nagas, dressed in their traditional tribal attire, headgear and jewellery, dance to the tunes of songs that detail their everyday chores and celebrate their agrarian roots, describing toiling in the field and sowing the harvest. Some songs are a motivational call to war with reverberating beats to scare the enemies away, taking you back to the times when the tribes actively pursued headhunting (a tribe which is known to take back heads of their kill, deciding on their status in their respective tribe). The Naga Heritage Village is well-designed to accommodate hundreds of participants and thousands of visitors. Morungs are the traditional community halls that are used as a meeting place for the village men. Each tribe participating in the Hornbill festival creates their morung in the Heritage Village as well as a community kitchen, and put up stalls of authentic Naga food for visitors. JoyofFlying StayHydrated Aircraft cabins are generally very dry due to which dehydration can occur easily. To overcome this: Drink lots of water but ensure the intake is slow and regular. Drinking too much water suddenly will cause the body to expel water quickly, forcing you to visit the toilet frequently. Dry eyes can aggravate with dry atmosphere. Bring along lubricating eye drops and use when required. Also, ditch contact lenses and opt for spectacles while on flight. Even your skin needs hydration. Apply moisturiser or a body spritzer on exposed body parts to stay hydrated. Keeptea, coffee and alcohol intake to a minimum. Foot Pumps Keeping both heels on the floor, point feet upwards as high as you can. Return feet to earlier position. Then, lift heels while keeping the balls of your feet on the floor. Repeat the exercise as desired. Simply walking up and down the aircraft aisle a few times or performing a few tip toes or light stretching can help blood circulation. InflightExercises Especially on longer flights, we suggest you perform these simple exercises to keep yourself energised. Shoulder Lifts Gently lift your right shoulder and lower the left one simultaneously. Repeat the movement five times by alternating between shoulders. Knee Lifts Lift knee up toward your chest and hold the position for 10 seconds. Gently lower knee and repeat with the other leg. Repeat the exercise as desired. Deep Vein Thrombosis DVT can occur when a blood clot forms in the large veins of legs or arms, partially or completely blocking blood circulation. Sitting still and inactivity during long flights may lead to the occurrence of DVT. If you are flying long distance, please ensure you perform inflight exercises listed above as a precaution against developing DVT. When possible and permissible, stretch your legs and walk along the aisle. Beware of early symptoms like pain or swelling in legs. Popping Ears Changes in air pressure or altitude cause our ears to‘pop’and sometimes ache during take-offs and landings. For a comfortable flying experience, chew sweets or mimic the act of chewing and swallowing if you do not have any available with you. This will relieve the discomfort and help stabilise the pressure in the ear canals. Pacifiers will work just as well for toddlers. If you have cold, use a nasal decongestant to clear your nasal passage and alleviate the ache. To counter the effects of jetlag, get as much sleep as possible when flying west to east. When flying in the reverse direction, try and stay awake. AirAsia’s chic Snug-as-a-bug hoodie keeps you cosy with its neck pillow attached to a soft hooded collar.
