HOW TO NEGOTIATE A SIGNING BONUS
A signing bonus is a lump sum of money that is paid to you when you
start your new job. It is typically used as a way to entice top talent to join
a company. If you’re lucky enough to be in a position to negotiate a
signing bonus, there are a few things you should keep in mind. This
workbook will walk you through the steps you can take to be prepared
and ask for what you want.
Remember that negotiation is a two-way street. While it’s important that
you advocate for yourself, be prepared to compromise in order to reach
an agreement that works for everyone. For example, if you’re looking for a
higher salary than what’s being offered, you may be able to negotiate
more vacation days instead.
Another simple tactic that can work is to ask for a guaranteed bonus of
100% (in situations where you will earn one) in the first year, this may
work for them and will get you closer to your target salary.
If you have an offer in hand, congratulations! But before you sign on the
dotted line, be sure to negotiate for a signing bonus that meets your
needs. With a little research and preparation, you can confidently ask for—
and get—the compensation package that you deserve.

STEP
1
Wait Till You Get The Offer
Don't talk about what you need to sign the offer
until you have the offer. This is the most
leverage you will ever have with this employer.
STEP
3
Know Your Value
There is a reason you got the offer. Be ready to
discuss what makes you special: education,
experience, certifications, etc...
STEP
2
Do Your Research
Get online and find out what the industry is
offering right now. Look at other job ads with
the same job title online. Talk to your network.
STEP
4
Be Specific, add a little.
Ask for a specific amount, number of days
vacation, education reimbursement, or anything
else. Add 15% so they can negotiate too.
8. 7
Industry research on Glassdoor.
Look at what other employees have gotten, have to say...
Check out Indeed.com for other listings with the same job title and
see what they offer in the job ads.
Write down what you have to offer and why you are asking for
more.
Write down what you can accomplish in your new role and the
benefit that will bring them.
Write down your ask, add 15% Say it outloud, think about how fast
you could spend it and realize it is not too much.
Practice asking for the sign-on bonus out-loud in front of someone.
Write down some alternatives you will accept to a cash bonus and
their approximate value to you.
Relax, you already have the job, you already have an offer, and you
have a great chance of making it a little better!
