4. BENEFITS OF ONLINE CLASSES
• With the Covid pandemic online lectures would become predominant
• There are a lot of benefits in online mode of lectures
• Very effective online teaching software have been developed
• You can have the lecture session privately at your home , office or any other place
you want
• The students and the lecturer can decide a time convenient for both parties
• No transport or additional risk of travelling to a specific place
• No risk of infection from viruses such as Covid-19
• Save time and money

5. THERE ARE FOUR FUNDAMENTALS IN
DELIVERING ONLINE CLASSES
SUCCESSFULLY
• 1. Hardware
• 2. Software
• 3. Students
• 4. Lecturer
Presentation by Maxwell Ranasinghe
6. HARDWARE
• Both students and the lecturer need to have appropriate hardware
• It could be a computer or a hand held phone – but better be a desktop or a laptop
computer
• It needs to have a microphone and a camera or if not those need to be fixed as
accessories
• Microphone and the camera need to be checked always before a session is started.
• It needs to have a proper internet connection: better to have a broadband
connection

7. SOFTWARE
• Your computer needs to have suitable software to conduct an online class such a
Zoom, teams or any other software that your institution uses
• Use a licensed version by buying the software from authorized institutions if you are
not using a free software. ( free software has limitations)
• Both the lecturer and the students should know the basics of operation of software
such as login, logout, camera on/off, sound mute/unmute, using icons such as
raising hand for questions, recoding, breaking out room operations etc. ( always
better to have a familiarization session of the software before the proper online
class commences)

8. STUDENTS
• Change the mind set that only offline lectures are effective
• Get ready for the lecturer as if you are getting ready for an offline lecture
• Do your homework by reading pre-lecture material, make notes and list questions
that you would like to ask during the session
• Know your online classmates by name and have their contact numbers for you to
discuss with them any matter before, within or after the online session
• Get the contact information of the lecturer
• Dress well to appear in video
• Ask your family members or other associates to restrict their use of internet facility if
you are on a common network and if your network get busy if many are connected
during the session
Presentation by Maxwell Ranasinghe
9. • Always better to take notes of important facts although you get a recorded version
of the lecture. It will keep you awake and actively participate
• Have your total focus on the lecture. Do not engage in sending messages or
checking your Facebook whilst participating in your online lecture.
• Do not do any other work like peeling carrots or potatoes under the table whilst
participating in the lecture
• As and when a question comes to your mind, use raise your hand icon to ask a
question
• It is always better to appear in video as just looking at the computer will make you
bored
Presentation by Maxwell Ranasinghe
10. • Show your interest to the lecturer by responding to his questions or gestures
• Do not be very formal, try and talk with lecturer and other students if it needs
• If lecturer is conducting his session totally on PowerPoint and keeps on going for
more than 30 minutes at a stretch, try and interrupt and ask a question or ask for a
short break
• If the lecturer do not ask for a feedback, always give your feedback voluntarily and
appreciate the good points and suggest your ideas to improve the weaker areas in
the lecture session
Presentation by Maxwell Ranasinghe
11. LECTURER
• Prepare yourself before the actual online class. It is best to rehearse offline before
your class
• Check all the necessary equipment and services, like your internet, laptop, camera,
etc. before your session
• Let students know the outline of the session so that they know what to expect
• Let students know that you will call their names within the session to find out the
actual participation
Presentation by Maxwell Ranasinghe
12. • Do not be very formal and be yourself as if you are conducting an offline lecture
• Talk about the current environment and the issues faced as to Covid etc. before you
start the formal lecture session
• Let students know that online classes are effective as much as offline classes and
motivate them to actively participate
• Be ready with the assignments that you want to share after your online class
• Have a list of names and contact numbers of students
Presentation by Maxwell Ranasinghe
13. • Call students by phone if you have an issue with the connection or any other matter
you may need to discuss out of online system
• During online sessions, give proper breaks so that the students will have the time to
think about the topic and frame their questions
• It is better to keep your class short or as a series of short sessions; this depends on
various parameters, like the topic, the participation of students, and the teaching
plan
• Have short practical activities or exercises as and when possible
• Do not show long videos that may make students bored
Presentation by Maxwell Ranasinghe
14. • You may ask a few open-ended questions related to the topic during the online
session to make students more responsive
• Encourage students not only to ask their queries or doubts related to the topic but
also to answer the questions asked by their peers
• You may set up an online discussion forums among the students. That takes the
boredom out. Visit the discussion rooms and talk to them
• Call students by name amidst the online session to check whether they are really
participating the session
Presentation by Maxwell Ranasinghe
15. • Use all the strategies that you use in offline lectures to keep students engaged in
the online sessions too
• Do not postpone or cancel classes without a very valid reason
• Take feedback from the students. It will help you learn their point of view about the
session
