A Day in the Navy
                                   19 March 2008

•   On March 19th, 332,823 Active Duty, 70,521 Reserve Component Sailors, with 5,544
    Reserves mobilized, and 178,165 civilians are serving in the Department of the Navy.

•   280 active ships are in service. 140 (50%) including 6 carriers and 4 amphibious large deck
    ships are underway.

•   Approximately 6,300 Sailors are deployed as Individual Augmentees around the world in
    support of the Global War on Terror, including 2,600 in Iraq and 1,300 in Afghanistan,
    among various other countries around the world.

•   The Navy League’s three-day Sea Air & Space Expo continues in Washington, D.C. focusing
    on Global Maritime Security. The Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard-signed Global
    Maritime Strategy is being promoted through the “Conversation with the Country” road show
    at the event.

•   USS NIMITZ CSG, with Carrier Airwing 11 and Destroyer Squadron 23, is underway in the
    Western Pacific to provide presence and a response capability -- ensuring maritime security
    and stability.

•   USS KITTY HAWK, Carrier Air Wing 5, and Destroyer Squadron 15 are spending their first
    full day at sea from Yokosuka, Japan. KITTY HAWK is certifying its flight deck and
    personnel before flying out air wing aircraft for their crews' carrier qualifications.

•   CARRIER AIRWING 2 completes embarkation aboard USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN.
    LINCOLN and Carrier Strike Group 9 are performing carrier qualifications at the start of a
    seven-month deployment to support operations in Afghanistan and Iraq.

•   USS PELELIU Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG) and elements of the 15th Marine
    Expeditionary Unit are operating in the Eastern Pacific conducting ESG Integration and
    Composite Training Unit Exercise in preparation for a deployment this summer, testing the
    strike group's ability to operate as a cohesive team while coordinating aviation and
    amphibious assets.

•   USS CARL VINSON is entering the final phase of its scheduled 40-month Refueling
    Complex Overhaul (RCOH) at Northrop Grumman Newport News shipyard in Newport
    News, Va. The ship is now less than one year from returning to sea with sea trials beginning
    March 1, 2009.

•   Sailors and embarked Marines from the USS HARPERS FERRY and 31st Marine
    Expeditionary Unit (MEU) participate in Field Training Exercises and MEDCAPS/ENCAPS
    in Indonesia.
•   USS NASSAU (LHA 4) and USS NASHVILLE (LPD 13) are underway in the central and
    eastern Mediterranean providing maritime security operations (MSO) and theater security
    cooperation (TSC) efforts. While underway, the ship is conducting visit, board, search and
    seizure (VBSS) drills with USS SAN JACINTO (CG 56).

•   USS PHILIPPINE SEA (CG 58) and USS ASHLAND (LSD 48) arrive in-port Haifa, Israel
    for a port call. While in-port, the ships’ Commanding Officers will conduct office calls with
    the Mayor of Haifa and the Commanding Officer of Haifa’s Naval Base.

•   USS HAWAII, the nation’s newest Virginia-class submarine, is underway in the
    SOUTHCOM area of responsibility conducting counter illicit trafficking operations in
    support of U.S. and participating nation drug control programs.

•   USS FORT MCHENRY and HSV SWIFT are beginning their port call in Monrovia, Liberia
    as part of Africa Partnership Station. Both ships are supporting an exercise delivering
    humanitarian assistance and medical goods in conjunction with U.S. Marine Forces Europe
    and Project Hope.

•   USS DALLAS is underway in the Mediterranean Sea after participation in NATO’s
    “Operation Active Endeavor,” an ongoing naval patrol of the Mediterranean by the alliance
    and its regional partners monitoring maritime activity to help detect, deter and respond to
    terrorism and other transnational threats.

•   USS OHIO is in Guam after participating in the bi-national exercise Key Resolve/Foal Eagle
    and conducting the first foreign port visit for an SSGN submarine in Busan, Republic of
    Korea.

•   Navy Installations Command is providing funeral honor support to over 120 funerals for our
    country’s veterans. The Navy Installations Command coordinates approximately 100 funeral
    honors each day.

•   Guam - The House Veterans Affairs Committee (Public Safety and Military Affairs) is
    visiting the island to discuss a new Veteran's Hospital and plans for a new Naval Hospital,
    and to discuss laydown and options for supporting a larger veteran's population after the
    pending buildup.

•   Approximately 2,800 Seabees are deployed to 17 countries around the globe in support of the
    maritime strategy. To date, more than 15,000 Seabees have deployed in support of
    Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.

•   Individual augmentees returning from deployment in the Central Command AOR are going
    through a Warrior Transition Program (WTP) at Camp Arifjan prior to returning to the
    States. This facility offers a single location to provide individual augmentee (IA) Sailors
    with education, programs and tools that will strengthen them through the mental and
logistical transition into and out of their assignments in places like Iraq, Afghanistan and
    other locations while serving directly in support of the Global War on Terror (GWOT).

•   Naval Air Reserve squadron VAQ-209 "Star Warriors," welcomed back 3 E/A-6B Prowler
    aircraft deployed to Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring
    Freedom since January. More than 200 personnel from the squadron completed 230 combat
    sorties, 1,200 flight hours in less than three months with an unprecedented 100% sortie
    completion.

•   USS CROMMELIN, USS SIMPSON, USS STEPHEN W. GROVES, and US Navy P-3s are
    conducting Counter Narcotic operations in the Caribbean Sea and Eastern Pacific. Since the
    beginning of the year, 51 metric tons of cocaine and .04 metric tons of heroin have been
    seized.

The material above is prepared for use by Navy Leaders to provide scene setter information
describing the tempo of Navy daily operations in an unclassified manner. One day is chosen to
provide more specific detail and present tense is recommended to set an appropriate tone.
Although it is not possible to mention every ongoing activity, representative operations have
been selected and chopped through OPNAV N3/5 and N2.

A Day in the Navy: Over 280 Ships Underway Globally
