A Day in the Navy
                                    24 July 2008

•   On July 24th, 331,828 Active Duty, 69,493 Reserve Component Sailors, with 5,766 Reserves
    mobilized, and 182,879 civilians are serving in the Department of the Navy.

•   280 active ships are in service. 152 (54%) including 4 carriers and 4 amphibious large deck
    ships are underway.

•   Approximately 9,400 Individual Augmentees are deployed on the ground around the world in
    support of the War on Terror, including 2,641 in Iraq and 1,397 in Afghanistan.

•   Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gary Roughead addresses the National Naval Officers
    Association’s (NNOA) annual conference in Portsmouth, Va. NNOA actively supports the
    Sea Services in the development of a diverse officer corps through recruitment, retention, and
    career development.

•   USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) and embarked Carrier Air Wing 2 fly 75 sorties in support
    of Operation Enduring Freedom in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.

•   The crew of fast-attack submarine USS Alexandria (SSN 757) is enjoying a break in Toulon,
    France, from its support of maritime security operations in the 6th Fleet area of operations.

•   The guided missile submarine USS Florida (SSGN 728) is conducting her first upkeep in
    Diego Garcia. Florida is forward deployed for one year at a time to provide a covert, quick
    response land attack/strike warfare platform capable of launching up to 154 Tomahawk
    missiles.

•   USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) is en route Tonga where the crew will have the opportunity
    to experience the Coronation of the King.

•   Reserve Sailors from Naval Air Systems Command perform aircraft structural repair for
    Navy and Marine Corps forces in Iraq.

•   Naval Air Facility (NAF) El Centro supports the WOT, providing training support and
    facilities in executing 96 sorties for Carrier Training Wing 2, Marine Medium Helicopter
    Squadron 268 and Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 369. NAF El Centro also
    provides support for 120 parachute drops for 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion and
    Marine Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 2 and shelter for Navy T-45 aircraft evacuating
    in advance of Hurricane Dolly from Kingsville, Texas.

•   Onboard USS Bainbridge (DDG 96) in waters off Panama City, Fla., crewmembers,
    scientists and engineers from the Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division, and
    Mine Warfare Mission Package Detachment One (MIW MP DET-1) conduct technical
evaluations and training on the Navy’s AN/WLD-1 Remote Minehunting System (RMS).
    Tests focus on RMS and ship interoperability, specifically functions with the ship's crew and
    architecture; such as its launch and recovery system, computers, consoles, and sonar control
    and the tests will help train and qualify DET-1 crew members in preparation for their
    embarkation on LCS-1 Freedom after commissioning this fall.

•   Rear Admiral Len Hering, Commander, Navy Region Southwest addresses the Military
    Child Education Coalition (MCEC) National Conference in Grapevine, Texas as they work
    to ensure quality education for all military children affected by mobility, family separation,
    and transition. Approximately 800 military education supporters are attending the conference
    as MCEC continues their efforts with DoD on the Interstate Education Compact to
    standardize education requirements for military children across all states.

•   Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake’s Coso geothermal plant produces approximately 6.5
    million kW-hrs, enough electricity to serve approximately 1,500,000 people.

•   Through an innovative water conservation program at Naval Air Station Lemoore, the
    installation consumes an estimated 11,290 fewer gallons of water than it did on the same date
    in previous years, with a net reduction of on average 13% less water per day with a savings
    of $138,000 per year.

•   Combined Joint Task Force–Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA) members conduct a Medical Civil
    Action Project (MEDCAP) at the Samburu Health Clinic near Mombasa, Kenya, and care for
    more than 3,000 people.

•   USNS Mercy is completes two weeks of operations in Timor-Leste conducting a variety of
    medical, dental, engineering and veterinary civil action projects as part of Pacific Partnership
    2008. Pacific Partnership is a four-month humanitarian assistance program that partners U.S.
    Navy and international non-governmental organization personnel with host nation personnel
    to conduct assistance projects.

•   USS Lassen (DDG 82) and USS McCampbell (DDG 85) participate in a Maritime Counter
    Special Operations Forces exercise with the Republic of Korea (ROK) Navy. The exercise
    strengthens the two countries’ abilities to fight in a complex multithreat environment
    consisting of anti-submarine, anti-air, and anti-surface threats, to improve the integration of
    coastal sites and flex joint U.S. Navy, Army and Air Force capabilities with the ROK Navy
    and Air Force.

•   Fast-attack submarines USS Los Angeles (SSN 688) and USS Pasadena (SSN 752) operate
    in the waters around Pearl Harbor Naval Station, Hawaii as part of the 2008 Rim of the
    Pacific Exercise (RIMPAC). RIMPAC is the world's largest multinational exercise with
    participants including the United States, Australia, Canada, Chile, Japan, the Netherlands,
    Peru, Republic of Korea, Singapore and the United Kingdom.

•   USS Juneau (LPD 10) prepares to make a historic visit to its namesake city of Juneau, Alaska
    as part of the state’s 50th anniversary of becoming a part of the United States.
•   The Transition Training Academy (TTA) holds a graduation ceremony at Naval Medical
    Center San Diego for 43 graduates. The TTA provides innovative Information Technology
    training for Veterans wounded or injured while serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.

•   Commander, Navy Region Southeast activates the Navy Family Accountability and
    Assessment System (NFASS) to conduct a local muster and assess needs of more than
    14,000 military, civilians, and family members living in Texas counties impacted by
    Hurricane Dolly. Fleet and Family Support Centers stand by to assist Navy families.

•   Navy Installations facilitate 126 military funerals today for eligible veterans throughout the
    United States, bringing the total so far in 2008 to approximately 30,000 funerals.

•   Navy Region Southwest Regional Training Team (RTT) execute a Reliant Series exercise at
    Naval Weapons Station, Seal Beach, Calif. The exercise enhances the joint capabilities of
    the Navy’s Fire and Emergency Services, Security, Fleet and Family support services and
    enhances the Navy’s ability to work with the local responders and communities during crises.

•   Naval Station Norfolk personnel conduct planning for the National Disaster Medical System
    (NDMS) exercise which focuses on installations’ engagement and coordination with civilian
    participants by establishing a unified command and civilian military partnerships.

•   Navy Region Southeast participates in a joint oil spill drill exercise with other Navy
    commands, the USCG and the Key West Pipeline Company, Key West National Marine
    Sanctuary, and Florida Department of Environmental Protection to enhance response
    capabilities among the many stakeholders in the maritime environment.

•   Navy Cyber Defense Operations Command (NCDOC) Cyber Warriors rigorously prosecute
    more than 275,000 potential threats to Navy networks as they battle adaptive and
    sophisticated adversaries around the world. The NCDOC team of 200 Sailors, civilians and
    contractors fight to ensure Information Dominance for the Navy.

•   Navy Information Operations Command Georgia has 57 Sailors deployed on 15 ships, three
    submarines, three aviation squadrons, and one riverine squadron with an additional 56 Sailors
    at the Fleet Information Operations Center providing Information Warfare/Cryptologic
    expertise support to 16 Coalition Units, seven Coast Guard units, twelve Auxiliary Ships, and
    33 U.S. Surface Combatants.

•   Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station Atlantic (NCTAMS LANT)
    receives word it has won the Drug Education for Youth (DEFY) Red Ribbon Award for its
    Community Drug Awareness efforts over the past year.

•   Personnel assigned to Commander Operational Test and Evaluation Force are testing new
    systems for the Fleet including a Rapid Deployment Concept Unmanned Air Vehicle for use
    by explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) forces and the AIM-120 missile being utilized by EA-
    18G in China Lake, Calif.
•   A task group led by Commander, Destroyer Squadron 1 is in Indonesia participating in Naval
    Engagement Activity (NEA) 2008. During NEA 2008, Sailors from both navies will conduct
    military-to-military exchanges such as a CENTRIX test, diving, a health symposium and
    sports events. The U.S. task group consists of Commander, Destroyer Squadron 1, USS
    Tortuga (LSD 46), USS Jarrett (FFG 33) and USS Ford (FFG 54).

•   USS Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group, with embarked Carrier Air Wing 14, is underway
    on a scheduled deployment in the Seventh Fleet area of responsibility.

  • 1. A Day in the Navy 24 July 2008 • On July 24th, 331,828 Active Duty, 69,493 Reserve Component Sailors, with 5,766 Reserves mobilized, and 182,879 civilians are serving in the Department of the Navy. • 280 active ships are in service. 152 (54%) including 4 carriers and 4 amphibious large deck ships are underway. • Approximately 9,400 Individual Augmentees are deployed on the ground around the world in support of the War on Terror, including 2,641 in Iraq and 1,397 in Afghanistan. • Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Gary Roughead addresses the National Naval Officers Association’s (NNOA) annual conference in Portsmouth, Va. NNOA actively supports the Sea Services in the development of a diverse officer corps through recruitment, retention, and career development. • USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) and embarked Carrier Air Wing 2 fly 75 sorties in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations. • The crew of fast-attack submarine USS Alexandria (SSN 757) is enjoying a break in Toulon, France, from its support of maritime security operations in the 6th Fleet area of operations. • The guided missile submarine USS Florida (SSGN 728) is conducting her first upkeep in Diego Garcia. Florida is forward deployed for one year at a time to provide a covert, quick response land attack/strike warfare platform capable of launching up to 154 Tomahawk missiles. • USS John S. McCain (DDG 56) is en route Tonga where the crew will have the opportunity to experience the Coronation of the King. • Reserve Sailors from Naval Air Systems Command perform aircraft structural repair for Navy and Marine Corps forces in Iraq. • Naval Air Facility (NAF) El Centro supports the WOT, providing training support and facilities in executing 96 sorties for Carrier Training Wing 2, Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 268 and Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 369. NAF El Centro also provides support for 120 parachute drops for 1st Marine Special Operations Battalion and Marine Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron 2 and shelter for Navy T-45 aircraft evacuating in advance of Hurricane Dolly from Kingsville, Texas. • Onboard USS Bainbridge (DDG 96) in waters off Panama City, Fla., crewmembers, scientists and engineers from the Naval Surface Warfare Center Panama City Division, and Mine Warfare Mission Package Detachment One (MIW MP DET-1) conduct technical
  • 2. evaluations and training on the Navy’s AN/WLD-1 Remote Minehunting System (RMS). Tests focus on RMS and ship interoperability, specifically functions with the ship's crew and architecture; such as its launch and recovery system, computers, consoles, and sonar control and the tests will help train and qualify DET-1 crew members in preparation for their embarkation on LCS-1 Freedom after commissioning this fall. • Rear Admiral Len Hering, Commander, Navy Region Southwest addresses the Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC) National Conference in Grapevine, Texas as they work to ensure quality education for all military children affected by mobility, family separation, and transition. Approximately 800 military education supporters are attending the conference as MCEC continues their efforts with DoD on the Interstate Education Compact to standardize education requirements for military children across all states. • Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake’s Coso geothermal plant produces approximately 6.5 million kW-hrs, enough electricity to serve approximately 1,500,000 people. • Through an innovative water conservation program at Naval Air Station Lemoore, the installation consumes an estimated 11,290 fewer gallons of water than it did on the same date in previous years, with a net reduction of on average 13% less water per day with a savings of $138,000 per year. • Combined Joint Task Force–Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA) members conduct a Medical Civil Action Project (MEDCAP) at the Samburu Health Clinic near Mombasa, Kenya, and care for more than 3,000 people. • USNS Mercy is completes two weeks of operations in Timor-Leste conducting a variety of medical, dental, engineering and veterinary civil action projects as part of Pacific Partnership 2008. Pacific Partnership is a four-month humanitarian assistance program that partners U.S. Navy and international non-governmental organization personnel with host nation personnel to conduct assistance projects. • USS Lassen (DDG 82) and USS McCampbell (DDG 85) participate in a Maritime Counter Special Operations Forces exercise with the Republic of Korea (ROK) Navy. The exercise strengthens the two countries’ abilities to fight in a complex multithreat environment consisting of anti-submarine, anti-air, and anti-surface threats, to improve the integration of coastal sites and flex joint U.S. Navy, Army and Air Force capabilities with the ROK Navy and Air Force. • Fast-attack submarines USS Los Angeles (SSN 688) and USS Pasadena (SSN 752) operate in the waters around Pearl Harbor Naval Station, Hawaii as part of the 2008 Rim of the Pacific Exercise (RIMPAC). RIMPAC is the world's largest multinational exercise with participants including the United States, Australia, Canada, Chile, Japan, the Netherlands, Peru, Republic of Korea, Singapore and the United Kingdom. • USS Juneau (LPD 10) prepares to make a historic visit to its namesake city of Juneau, Alaska as part of the state’s 50th anniversary of becoming a part of the United States.
  • 3. The Transition Training Academy (TTA) holds a graduation ceremony at Naval Medical Center San Diego for 43 graduates. The TTA provides innovative Information Technology training for Veterans wounded or injured while serving in Afghanistan and Iraq. • Commander, Navy Region Southeast activates the Navy Family Accountability and Assessment System (NFASS) to conduct a local muster and assess needs of more than 14,000 military, civilians, and family members living in Texas counties impacted by Hurricane Dolly. Fleet and Family Support Centers stand by to assist Navy families. • Navy Installations facilitate 126 military funerals today for eligible veterans throughout the United States, bringing the total so far in 2008 to approximately 30,000 funerals. • Navy Region Southwest Regional Training Team (RTT) execute a Reliant Series exercise at Naval Weapons Station, Seal Beach, Calif. The exercise enhances the joint capabilities of the Navy’s Fire and Emergency Services, Security, Fleet and Family support services and enhances the Navy’s ability to work with the local responders and communities during crises. • Naval Station Norfolk personnel conduct planning for the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) exercise which focuses on installations’ engagement and coordination with civilian participants by establishing a unified command and civilian military partnerships. • Navy Region Southeast participates in a joint oil spill drill exercise with other Navy commands, the USCG and the Key West Pipeline Company, Key West National Marine Sanctuary, and Florida Department of Environmental Protection to enhance response capabilities among the many stakeholders in the maritime environment. • Navy Cyber Defense Operations Command (NCDOC) Cyber Warriors rigorously prosecute more than 275,000 potential threats to Navy networks as they battle adaptive and sophisticated adversaries around the world. The NCDOC team of 200 Sailors, civilians and contractors fight to ensure Information Dominance for the Navy. • Navy Information Operations Command Georgia has 57 Sailors deployed on 15 ships, three submarines, three aviation squadrons, and one riverine squadron with an additional 56 Sailors at the Fleet Information Operations Center providing Information Warfare/Cryptologic expertise support to 16 Coalition Units, seven Coast Guard units, twelve Auxiliary Ships, and 33 U.S. Surface Combatants. • Naval Computer and Telecommunications Area Master Station Atlantic (NCTAMS LANT) receives word it has won the Drug Education for Youth (DEFY) Red Ribbon Award for its Community Drug Awareness efforts over the past year. • Personnel assigned to Commander Operational Test and Evaluation Force are testing new systems for the Fleet including a Rapid Deployment Concept Unmanned Air Vehicle for use by explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) forces and the AIM-120 missile being utilized by EA- 18G in China Lake, Calif.
  • 4. A task group led by Commander, Destroyer Squadron 1 is in Indonesia participating in Naval Engagement Activity (NEA) 2008. During NEA 2008, Sailors from both navies will conduct military-to-military exchanges such as a CENTRIX test, diving, a health symposium and sports events. The U.S. task group consists of Commander, Destroyer Squadron 1, USS Tortuga (LSD 46), USS Jarrett (FFG 33) and USS Ford (FFG 54). • USS Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group, with embarked Carrier Air Wing 14, is underway on a scheduled deployment in the Seventh Fleet area of responsibility.
