As a parent/guardian of a student at a school receiving funds under Title I of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, you have the right to request the professional qualifications of the teachers who instruct your child and the paraprofessionals, if any, who assist them. You may request the following information about each of your child's classroom teachers and/or their paraprofessional assistants: 1. Whether the teacher has met State certification requirements; 2. Whether the teacher is teaching under an emergency permit or other provisional status by which State licensing criteria have been waived; 3. The teacher's college major; 4. Whether the teacher has any advanced degrees and, if so, the subject of the degrees; and 5. Whether any instructional aides or paraprofessionals provide services to child and, if so, their qualifications. https://dl.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=3271676 The field of Search as Learning addresses questions surrounding human learning during the search process. Existing research has largely focused on observing how users with learning-oriented information needs behave and interact with search engines. What is not yet quantified is the extent to which search is a viable learning activity compared to instructor-designed learning. Can a search session be as effective as a lecture video - our instructor-designed learning artefact - or learning? To answer this question, we designed a user study that pits instructor-designed learning (a short high-quality video lecture as commonly found in online learning platforms) against three instances of search, specifically (i) single-user search, (ii) search as a support tool for instructor-designed learning, and, (iii) collaborative search. We measured the learning gains of 151 study participants in a vocabulary learning task and report three main results: (i) lecture video watching yields up to 24% higher learning gains than single-user search, (ii) collaborative search for learning does not lead to increased learning, and (iii) lecture video watching supported by search leads up to a 41% improvement in learning gains over instructor-designed learning without a subsequent search phase.

Presentation prepared for PATT27 Abstract University teacher training departments have many functions in their role as Schools for Initial Teacher Education (ITE), these include accrediting qualified teacher status, teaching subject knowledge and pedagogy, and influencing change in a school subject’s content and pedagogy. This paper discusses this latter area. It can be easy for teacher training in universities to become ivory towers, modelling new ideas for curriculum delivery and content in a ‘bubble’ away from the real world of the school classroom. A centre of design and technology (D&T) education at an English university has undertaken research-led developments in the use of web 2.0 technologies and technology enhanced learning (TEL), modelling how they can be used in the classroom. The research examined in this paper is the next stage of the centre’s curriculum development to ensure the relevance of the university curriculum content and practices. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the use of TEL in secondary schools is inconsistent and sporadic with D&T teachers using TEL, with minimal awareness of research available, which could inform their practice. This impacts on the centre’s trainee teachers as they begin teaching in schools during their final year of the course, with a possible unrealistic expectation of how TEL is used in schools, based on their university experiences. To discover if their university experience is useful for both undergraduates and graduates of the course when they are teaching in schools, the research questions in this small comparative research project are: 1. How is TEL used by the university within the D&T subject knowledge modules of the course? 2. How is TEL used in D&T lessons in some local secondary schools? The analysis of this data will be a comparison of the use of TEL across these two fields. The aim of the subsequent discussion and conclusion is to ensure that the subject knowledge taught and modelled in university about TEL in D&T is relevant and forward thinking, preparing trainee teachers for their future employment.
