This presentation has three main objectives :\n\n•Firstly, I will describe how the iPhone and iPad are being integrated and deployed in American and Canadian universities and hospitals. \n•Secondly, I will address the use of mobile devices as tools for communication, collaboration and social networking ...with examples of iTunes apps ;\n•Finally, I will share with you my « Top 10 » Web 2.0 applications for clinical and pedagogical purposes.\n\n\n

In récent years, there has been a skyrocketing of interetst in new mobile technologies and how they can be used to enhance higher education and the practice of medicine and health sciences.\n\nA growing number of health professionals have taken the “out-of-the-box” initiative and have examined how mobile handheld communication devices can provide added value in both a teaching and clinical context..... a large number health professionals have yet to face this challenge.\n\n\n
- 5. Although I will often refer to specific Apple products, my examples also apply to other manufacturers of cell phones, tablets and other mobile devices...(Blackberry, Samsung.)..\n\n
- 6. Technology has changed the way we teach. Our teaching & learning environments go beyond the confines of the traditional classroom in time & space….we have had to learn how to better use time in the classroom vs time spent online.\n\n\n
- 7. Today’s students are skilled practitioners of mobile devices and social networking; students use technology in ways that allow them to do what they want, anytime, any place and across all geographical boundaries….today’s students are indeed digital natives.\n\n\n
- 8. Technology has also transformed the space and environment of our university libraries….online books & scholarly journals, data bases are easily accessible….24-7…students learn how to become computer literate and to develop their critical and creative thinking skills.\n\n
- 9. Doctors, health professionals and faculty members are just becoming familiar and engaged in using mobile devices to share, engage and connect in meaningful ways with their patients, staff and students.\n\n
- \n10. In the next few slides there are links to vidéos that describe how some American and Canadian hospitals and institutions have integrated and deployed mobile devices on a large scale. I will only direct u to these links…but not play the vidéos today cause of time.\n\nFirstly, Memorial Herman Healthcare System….\n\n\n

- 24. iTune apps\n\niTunes has the largest collection of mobile apps____ 425 000 and counting in practically every category. Many are free…others can be purchased at the app store.\n\nThe problem or challenge we face is how to serach and find the best app for a particular purpose (communication, productivity, collaboration or Networking). Or for a particular area of specialty….\n\nHow many of us have the time to preview, download and actually use the app….just managing the apps we download is often frustrating.\n\n

- ……\n30. iMedicalApps is the leading online destination used by medical professionals for coverage of mobile medical technology and apps.\n\nThey have been called an "Evidence-based trusted Web 2.0 Website" by the Cochrane Collaborative ; published multiple articles in peer reviewed journals, and been interviewed by the American Medical News and other media outlets.\n\n\n
- 31 & 32\nIn our program of occupational therapy, I and my colleague Prof Catherine Briand currently are working on the development of an app to be used in mental health..\n\n…..Together with a Montreal psychiatric hospital Louise H Lafontaine, we recently got a grant from the Bell Foundation to develop an app called Réadap (Rehabilitation)  ; designed for patients with severe cognitive and social problems the app would provide the users (patients and staff) with the best apps for stimulating autonomy in a large number of daily living skills ; (the slide is just a Template of a beta version) the catégories and sub catégories provide the user with the best of apps of that category, each of which can be rated and reviewed by the user…for data collection purposes. Pilot testing of réadaps will begin this Fall with about 25 ipod touch and ipads being distributed.\n\n

Web 2.0 applications allow us to create new frontiers for collaboration across disciplines and provide us with opportunities for academic innovation, collective intelligence and knowledge création.\n\n Let me now share with you my Top 10 Web 2.0 applications. The order of présentation in which I présent them is not of importance…they are each a 10 ! If you end up using one of these ten favorites then your time here was well spent.\n\n\n\n
- 36. Number 1. DropBox\n\nDropbox is a Web-based file hosting service that uses cloud computing to enable users to store and share files and folders with others….interact, share, collaborate with others is what DropBox allows u to do. I use it with my colleagues, my students, friends & family.\n\n

Second favorite : \n\nCmapTools is a software suite that facilitates the collaborative construction, sharing and publishing of knowledge models represented as concept maps. \n\nCmapTools is used worldwide by millions of users, and is available in over 15 languages. Users of all ages, from elementary school children to NASA scientists and other professionals use CmapTools to express and share their understanding about any topic.\n\n\n
- 38 First semester, first year…. our students in occupational therapy learn how to use CMap Tools for working on the case studies we present in our competency based program of occupational therapy.\n\n
- 39. \nAn eportfolio is a collection of works that reflect an individual's efforts, progress and accomplishments….it is also a tool for réflective thinking. Our OT students are required to use and build their portfolio to reflect on their clinical fieldwork expérience ; the eportfolio is a credited course throughout their 4 years of study.\n\nEduportfolio is one of many applications of that nature. It was developed by a colleague, Thierry Karsenti, professor at the Faculty of éducation, UdeM.\n\n
- 40. My #4 favorite…..SlideShare is the world's largest community for sharing slide presentations. \n It is amongst the most visited 250 websites in the world. Besides slide presentations, SlideShare also supports documents, PDFs, videos and webinars.\nYou can share your présentation with others and you can view slideshows created by others on your topic of interest…\n\n\n
- 41. Facebook is fifth…..no longer a social network just for students.\nFacebook has become an excellent marketing tool. \n\n\n
- 42. Mayo Clinic’s Facebook page includes basic information about the clinic as well as the latest news and podcasts from the main Mayo Clinic website, event listings, medical videos, and patient testimonials written on the “wall”—the public area of a profile page where Facebook members can add comments and notes.\n Staff members even respond to questions and comments on the page, giving it a personal touch.\n\n

- 43. YouTube is the most popular of social networking sites, and physicians, medical educators, and medical organizations have embraced it.\nThrough YouTube, anyone can post and comment on videos. Videos of histology slide interpretation, clinical procedure how-tos, and course lectures, abound on YouTube. As a Professional or a group of professionals , one can create YouTube channels to share research, video clips or up to-date news in any field of practice.\n... examples ………..2 of masters students of occupational therapy created a YouTube channel…subscribe, playlists\n\n\n\n

- 44. Number 7…..Delicious is a Web 2.0 application for Social bookmarking: a way of sharing and consuming digital documents. A great environment for storing, describing and sharing bookmarks on a subject of common interest.\n\n
- 45. #8 Wikipedia is a free, web-based, collaborative, multilingual encyclopedia project supported by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. Its 19 million articles (over 3.7 million in English) have been written collaboratively by volunteers around the world. Almost all of its articles can be edited by anyone with access to the site, and it has about 90,000 active contributors.\n\n
- 46. No discussion of social networking would be complete without mentioning the proliferation of Web 2.0 tools for patients. Patients have long gravitated to the web to share their stories through forums, bulletin boards, and blogs.\nPatient social networks are an extension of the desire to connect with others suffering from a particular disease or undergoing treatment for it. Some of the more popular sites such as PatientsLikeMe.com have thousands of members. \n\nAlthough the main benefit of these social networking sites is the support of peers, they may prompt patients to ask why they are not receiving the same treatments as others on site. For that reason, physicians and health professionals should become familiar with them.\n\n
- 47. Finally, #10 favorite,\nAcademia.edu is a free social networking website and collaboration tool aimed at academics and researchers from all fields. You can follow other academics in your field and u can follow journal publications. \nYou can share your papers, talks, blog posts, teaching documents. People following your work wiill see your updates in their News Feeds.\n\n\n
