9. How do you know if you are
addicted to social
networking sites and
smartphone games?
10. You check your mentions,
messages, retweets or
post something on any of
your social media
accounts first thing when
you wake up.
IT’S THE FIRST
THING IN THE
MORNING
11. YOU THINK IT’S WORSE TO LEAVE YOUR
PHONE AT HOME THAN TO LEAVE YOUR
WALLETAT HOME
When you can’t leave your phone. It needs to be by your
side all the time.
12. YOU HAVE NOTHING TO
DO
• You feel bored and tired
without your phone. There is
no entertainment and there
isn’t anything else to do.
• You repeatedly look at your
phone when you are bored
or while waiting for your
food to be served at a
restaurant.
13. A
MUST
• You have to share everything you’re doing , where you
are , who are you with on social networking sites like
twitter, etc.
14. YOUR SCHOOLWORK IS AFFECTED
• You cannot seem to complete an hour of homework or
studying without looking at your phone
20. Group Activity
• Read the case study given to your group
• Discuss ways to help the person involved
Nominate a person in your group to:
1. Describe the situation or problem that the
person in the case study is experiencing
2. What are the effects if the behaviour
continues
3. Suggest ways that the problem could be
prevented
4. Suggests ways that your group think can help
22. 1. Track Your Time Online – The simplest way to
ensure you aren’t wasting time in any one place is
to monitor your time. Use a stopwatch and set a
limit. When time is up, log out, regardless of what’s
left. There is always tomorrow.
2. Remember the Telephone - A call to a friend works
just as well as a Facebook message, and it is real
human interaction, something you maybe losing
touch with.
3. Go Outside – get away from your portal to the
network. Get some sunshine, chances are you
need it.
Useful tips
23. 4. Use Your Networks Productively –use Twitter
only to share and interact with people with similar
interests as you. Do not follow or allow people to
follow just because you want to increase the
numbers
5. Prioritize - Use these tools only when your work
has been done, or during down time. Don’t spend
time updating your profile or changing your picture
when there is work to be done. This will not only
save you time and increase productivity, but will
build self discipline as well.
24. 6. Stop Procrastinating – Many times we get on
Facebook or twitter when we have real work that
we just don’t want to do. Stop that! Get the work
done. Once you finish you’ll have all the time in the
world to spend making friends on Facebook.
7. Remove the Cell phone Apps – You don’t really
need Facebook or Twitter on your phone. Nothing
on there can be that important. Save your social
networking for when you are behind the desk and
limit the distractions throughout the day.
25. 8. Spend More Time With Close Friends and
Family – You aren’t the only one who suffers
when you spend countless hours on MySpace.
et back to friends and family.
9. Avoid Denial: Do you spend over 5-6 hours
surfing and clicking around different social
media channels, or maybe even just one? Do
you ignore doing other tasks or spending time
with others? Is the first thing you do when you
wake up is tweet and do you tweet right before
you close your eyes?
26. 10. Pick Up a New Hobby: If you find yourself
spending too much time using social media
channels, think about picking up and
adopting a new hobby, preferably one which
you can practice outdoors and away from
your computer!
11. Don’t Compensate: Whether you are trying to
get over a bad break up, avoiding something or
running away from a family situation, do not
compensate by using social media!
12. Buddy up: pair up with another friend to help
each other combat excessive use. For
example, during breaks, if you see your buddy
start playing with the phone, tell him/her to
stop.
27. Remind yourselves of your goals
• You are in JC now and the ultimate
goal you want to achieve is to obtain
an A-Level Certificate worthy
enough of you to enter the
University course of your choice
• You do not want little distraction like
these to affect your studies and
therefore, reminding yourselves of
your goals will allow you to be much
more motivated and determined.

Introduction: Hello, I am ______, and she/he is _______, and we are Cyber-wellness ambassadors from New Media Arts.
As NMA Cyberwellness ambassadors, we created this cyberwellness civics package for all JC1s, customising it so that it relates better to all of us. We hope that you give us your full cooperation and enjoy today’s lesson while learning more about cyberwellness.
Before looking specifically at cyberwellness,it is important that all of us be a Smart Digital Citizen and a Media Literate. We would like to encourage everyone to harness the internet for a good cause and contribute positively to make the online environment a better place for all. Today, in particular, we want to explore how we can inspire each other positively.
Before we start, we want to define cyberwellness.Cyberwellness is the positive wellbeing of internet users and a healthy cyber culture for the internet communityIt involves 3 main areas:understanding of the risks of harmful online behavior, an awareness of how to protect oneself and others from such behavior, and a recognition of the power of the Internet to benefit oneself and the community at large
Cyberwellness covers a whole range of topics that includeCyberbullyingMaking friends onlineSharing personal information onlineCyber securityInternet AddictionGaming AddictionInternet LawJust to name a few.
Today, we will focus on something that is closer to us, in fact, in our pockets.Addiction to Social Networking and Smartphone Apps
Sit back and watch the video on social media addiction
The video you have just seen is an exaggeration of addiction to social networking sites and smartphone games. How do you yourself know if you are addicted to social networking sites and smartphone games?
If the first thing you do in the morning is to reach for your phoneto check your messages on Facebook, tweet something, update or check out other people's profiles, it may be a sign that you are addicted to your smartphone
Can you survive the day without your handphone? Say, if you leave your phone at home, do you feel anxious? Studies have found that being separated from their phones or turning off their phones can induce physical and mental withdrawal symptoms similar to those exhibited by drug addicts.
Does your life revolve around your phone so much that you feel that there is nothing to do without your phone? Or when you are bored, the first thing you do is look at your phone, hoping to find some twitter updates or messages from your friends?Do you often pull out your handphone while waiting for your food to arrive?
Do you often snap a picture of your lunch and post it on Instagram? Or tweet to tell everyone of your followers that you couldn’t get onto 3 buses in a row? Or do you check-in at all the places you visit on Four Square?
What are the effects of this addiction?
Social media networks, such as Facebook or Twitter, should bring you closer to your family and friends. When you find that you turn down plans to go out with people in real life to spend time on a social network, this may indicate a problem. Letting your time online overtake the time you spend with people offline makes people around you feel hurt and neglected. Eventually, your relationships with those near you fail and you become isolated.
Losing Sleep and time: You realise that you stay up very late to complete your homework. Often this is not because there is too much homework. Your focus and attention span is cut down significantly if you are distracted by your phone. As a result, more time is spent doing your work or revising for that major exam when it could have been done in a significantly shorter time. Staying up late, or forcing yourself to stay up all night to socialize online, also hurts your mood and may make you short-tempered or easily angered.
Spending so much time on social networking and smartphone games and apps cost you a lot of precious time in the critical months leading up to your Mid Course Exam or your A Level Exam.Your mind is also constantly on playing your game or reading your twitter updates so much so that you cannot fully concentrate on your work. Don’t let your smartphone ruin your future.
Now we will move on to a group activity (10 minutes)<Read out instructions clearly>
We will now share with you some ways to help yourself and your peers who are addicted to social networking or smartphone apps. Some of these points have been mentioned by your classmates during the group activity earlier.
Ultimately, remind yourself of your goals.
These are two helplines that you and your friends can go to if you need help. For other helplines, visit www.medialiteracycouncil.sg
