Hi- Welcome to Ms. Greco’s English Literature back to school night!
To begin, I’ll tell you a little bit about myself. I received my undergraduate degree from Fordham University, Rose Hill. After spending some time working in Manhattan in the advertising and fashion industries, I decided to follow my long time passion for literature and learning by receiving my Masters in Teaching with a concentration in English at Montclair State University. I am excited to be here and teaching 9 th grade literature.
Our classroom will be a place for learning and growth. In order for students to succeed, they will need to work together and with me on observing basic rules to ensure a fair environment for everyone. These rules are outlined on my website and also distributed in hard copy of the syllabus on the first day of class. In regard to the curriculum for this class, we follow the NJ Standard curriculum on English literature. Our class will also focus on using technology to our advantage throughout the year. Related to the use of technology, our class will focus on the 21 st Century Skills that are needed for students to develop as they progress in the classroom.
We want to teach English literature in a way that allows the student to be aware not only of the work, but also of the affect that the works have had on on greater society as well as they relation that the work has to other disciplines.
There will be multiple forms of assessment available to students. We will have essays, reading quizzes, blog responses, a technology project, and class participation chances for students to make up their grade. This will give the students the opportunity to utilize the learning style that best suits their needs and also allow them to experience new ways of evaluation to make up their grade.
Students will learn to participate in class using collaborative skills to work with their classmates. Not only will they interact during the classroom hours with group projects and in class participation, but they will also connect outside the classroom using our class blog. Usiing this technology, they will be able to respond and leave comments to each other’s work online.
We will spend one whole class period in the Media Lab. We will make use of the online resources available in a research based paper. Tutorials will be available for any student who would like to spend additional time working with technology related to the internet.
One larger technology integration project that the class will work on is a major research paper. This paper will integrate one of the works of literature that we study in class with a historical time period. There will be a few class periods devoted to online research techniques that can be used through the school’s media lab. There will be class time devoted to proper citation, including online research to demonstrate college level work. We will also expose students to direct source material. A synopsis of the class work will be posted on the class blog so that students can ask for suggestions or comment on each other’s work for improvements and to follow what research each other does.
Class room technology integration is very important to me and it keeps us in line with the 21 st century classroom skills all students need to acquire. In order to facilitate this learning, I will do a few things. First, I will have a website set up for class with homework, large projects that are coming up, syllabus, helpful external links, upcoming events, and contact information. Class time will be spent in the media lab. Students will be taught basics of online research and shown how to use resources available online. I will also use Engrade website so that students can track their progress and, in addition to the syllabus, be able to see their progress to track their own grades.
Thanks for taking the time to listen to my back to school night presentation. I am always available to contact with questions or concerns at grecom7@mail.montclair.edu.
