Media Studies Front cover textual analysis
Masthead Date and cost Main image Model Credit Cover lines Cover lines Sub heading, lead article Barcode
Main image. Focusing on a female, celebrity, she will be a main focus of an interview in this issue. She is dressed in what looks like white pyjamas and she is revealing her bra which shows sexuality and femininity. She is well presented and her hair and makeup are done and she is sitting down, so it is still a close up shot but you can see her whole body Pink circle used, attracts attention, also another cover line insight to what’s inside the magazine GLAMOUR in bold because it is the masthead. It is a feminine magazine so it is in pink Cover line, in bold ,short snappy sentence gives you insight so you know there will be an article about this inside This is a lot smaller font and it shows the name of the female that is pictured on the front, but they haven’t actually said that she is the person on the front and some people may not know who she is and will have to buy the magazine and read it to find out cover line tries to attract a certain female audience and is in pink and bold writing. Woman these days seem to be het about their weight so this would probably be aimed at the majority of females. This font is almost as big as the GLAMOUR title so this must mean that really want you to read this particular article in the magazine or they want to hint that it is a good article for women to read. Two different types of font are used and two different colours. This is to attract more attention to it. Here is another cover line for an article that is in the magazine, the number 5 is in a different font and colour and you have to buy and read the magazine to see what the 5 things are This is a small cover line at the bottom of the cover. This also gives us an insight of an article inside but it is placed at the bottom of the page and doesn’t attract you attention much maybe this is because this article is not the most important
Sky line at the top of the magazine, gives information about the magazine, persuasion techniques, and the font also stands out because it is white on a black background The main colour theme is red, white, black and grey. A cover line gives you information about new upcoming bands which will attract the audience and make them want to buy it to read on. The fonts are all different colours and sizes, making it more attractive and interesting This is an unusual masthead for a magazine because it is literally just one letter. They have made it noticeable and stand out by putting the letter on a red background in a white font. Writing inside of a shape can highlight it and attract more attention to it, all the information is about music because this is a music magazine and they need to attract there audience in the correct way. Down the side in highlighted writing so that it stands out is a list of artists, they don’t give anything else away this is so that you want to know why there are on the front cover and find out more The main picture is of a very famous international female artist called Cheryl Cole who everyone will recognise immediately, she is inside this magazine focusing on a photo shoot and an interview. There is another cover line here that says her name and she rocks, this language (Rocks) is linked to music. The writing stands out because it is white and red writing on a dark background.
Typical convention skyline, gives an insight to what will be covered in the magazine. In big bold lettering like the title because it may be an important feature of the magazine and they will want you to buy it to read this ‘important’ information. It is about music which is the genre of the magazine, therefore clearly relating the magazine to its audience. A puff, that gives you insight to an article in the magazine, stands out because of short snappy wording and in a blue circle. Main image and is a band that will be inside the magazine, they are a new band and having them on the front cover will draw readers in as they will want to find out more, the image is behind some text but in front of the heading. This is a typical convention for most magazines. Big and bold letting the same on every magazine because it is the name of it, white stands out against the background, every magazine has a name. The letting is plain, bold an square which could say that it is more masculine but the colour you cannot put a gender on because the colours vary on each magazine. Cover line, with a famous guys name, people may recognise it and be fans, he has been on television recently, this draws people in. Puffs at the side, bright colours and snappy , lines because people don’t want to have to read a big long paragraph on the front of the magazine, they just want quick information that is going to make them buy the magazine Main cover line, it is in big and bold font and is your main attraction the magazine, it is the name of the new band which feature on the cover, therefore you know what inside which be a lot more about his group A barcode is a typical convention for a magazine
Skyline – represents the fact that it is a music magazine and gives an insight to what bands will be inside the magazine in this issue – drawing in there audience This is very small but when the reader sees it is another thing that will encourage them to buy it, having offers on and free gifts in magazines is another way to entice your audience in and it is 2 free CD’s and this relates to the fact it is a music magazine. This is the masthead, it is typically in big, bold font and in white so it stands out against this dark background. The font type represents the music genre which is heavy metal music and it is heavy, sharp, harsh font. This is the main image and it is quite dark and mysterious and scary which could be said also represents the genre of the magazine, this is very different to many magazine cover images because they are usually people that have been beautified or photo shopped, this picture shows gives its audience what they want to see and read. The background the man in the picture is a bit misleading but it looks like a city that is on fire. This is the main cover line and it is in big and the middle and stands out so that it catches peoples attention the most and they will want to buy the magazine to find out what this magazine issue is covering on this band. These are more cover lines, which are enticing the reader to buy the magazine and read on because on the cover there is only limited information. The colours are very harsh and dark and more masculine fonts and images have been used, also heavy metal is highly associated with males so I would say that it has more male features Here is the bar code which many magazines have on the front – a typical convention.
This is the sky line and gives you parts of the contents of the magazine, enticing the audience in to buy it This is the masthead and name of the magazine, the background is dark and this font is in bold and white and is the largest text on the page. The text is behind the main image which is a typical convention for many magazines. This is the main image and it is a famous artist called Chris brown whom is internationally known therefore will be recognised . He is stood casually and the image has been placed in front of the masthead because it is more important to see his face. Here is a typical feature of a music magazine, it gives a list of new albums, songs or bands , relating to the interest of its audience This is a cover line and it mentions the name of the man on in the cover image, it is asking you a rhetorical question. This puff at the bottom says ‘CD’s are dead, the 30 hottest spots for hip hop and RNB on the web’ this is relating to the younger generation and the fact that CD’s are out-dated and everyone uses the internet to get there music . This is another cover line and the font is a lot smaller and there is colour change (black and red) which are quite masculine colours. This magazines looks like its been designed for a more male audience. The barcode is at the bottom left hand corner, it shows the date and price etc, making it look more professional, typical magazine convention.
The colour schemes are not particularly masculine although it is a male audience. A light orange and white and yellow are the main colours. This magazine is aimed at men aged 18+ Masthead/name of the magazine, FHM is recognisable and the big, bold lettering is eye catching . Here is a puff that relating to males who want to buy new summer clothes. This is the main image, a very famous Cheryl Cole, the women on the front of these magazines are dressed very seductively to entice in the male audience, she is wearing a low cut top that makes her look more sexual, this will please the male audience and is what sells this magazine. Cover lines and buzz words, to draw in the audience and makes them intrigued to see what is inside. Use of a rhetorical question to interest the reader more. The main cover line therefore is in large font and stands out, they want you to see it is about Cheryl Cole so you know inside there will be an article about her. This is another cover line but is a lot smaller and is in the far right hand corner, this could mean it is not as important as others. Here is the bar code in the bottom left hand corner making the magazine look more proffessional and with the date and price.
This is the skyline, it gives you info about getting free music downloads, which relates well to the audience . This is the masthead/name of the magazine, it is in quite curly modern font and in black which stands out well from the white background. This is a cover line and the large font number will draw people to look at it, it is in a similar font to the masthead, which keeps it looking sophisticated. This is the model credit, in big lettering and tells you the models name if you do not recognise her. Cover lines to give small amounts of information to the reader. The fonts used throughout the magazine are pink and black which can connote femininity and gives a more sophisticate look to the magazine. Cover lines, tell you small bits of information about the contents of a magazine. They use different sized fonts and colours and styles to make it look cool and to stand out to the reader. This is the cover image. It takes up the whole page and her head is in front of the masthead, this is a typical convention for magazines, she is Katy Perry and is a famous singer and is known internationally.
This is the skyline, it gives cover lines and is in smaller font but is at the top, so it may be important and will stand out at the top. The fact that it says, ‘over 25 reviews’ for people that like to read and will find this interesting , this will be a pull for them and will make them want to buy it to read these reviews. This is the BBC logo, showing who produced it and is advertising. This is the masthead, it had the 2nd two letters in italics, this gives it a classic and sophisticated effect. The genre of this magazine is classical music, I think that this font represents it well. Another pull, it says free CD, this can attract people that want to listen to music. Cover lines, shows some insight to what will be inside the magazine, attracts the reader. This is the model credit. It is in big and bold font and is all in capital letters, this makes us see that it is important and will be a main feature in the magazine. This box says ‘composer of the month’ this targets the audience of classical music well and may be something that they take part in. This is the main image, it shows a musician and she is holding a violin which goes with the genre of classical music, her head is over the masthead which is a typical convention for magazines.
This is the skyline, it stands out because it is in capital letters and white font against a red background. This magazine is the rock/indie music. The colour theme is red, black and white, I think that by the font and colours and layout that this is aimed at a more male audience. This is the masthead, it really stands out and has an effect because it is black font on a white background, it also has a ‘smashed’ effect because of the lines through the letters. This is something that it is always the font on the magazine and therefore will be highly recognised by fans. This is the model credit. It is in font just as big as the masthead, this could mean they feel that the bands that they have in there magazines are very important to them, by having there name on the front also means that if they are not recognised by the picture the reader will then know. This is the main image. It takes up the whole of the front cover and has been done cleverly because the lead singer is in front of the masthead but the other two band members are behind it, this connotes he is more important. These images are at the bottom and it means that they are also important and will be featuring in the magazine but they are not the main focus of this issue. This is a pull for readers, the fact that they will be getting free posters will make them want to buy it especially if they like the bands that are on the posters.
This is the skyline, it is talking in more of a slang way, this is because it is a rap music magazine and rap music is associated more with young people, and slang is more associated with how young people talk. This is the masthead, it stands out because it is a bright coloured font and is bold and in capital letters, the name of the magazine is scratch this could connote the fact that they scratch records. These are cover lines, they will draw in the reader because if they like the people that are featuring in the magazine and they instantly see it on the front cover they will want to buy it. The names of the musicians are bigger and bolder so they stand out. Here are more cover lines and they follow with the colour theme of white and blue text. This makes it look more sophisticated. This is the main image and it has Lil Wayne as the bigger picture and a DJ in the background , he is smaller and is behind text whereas Lil Wayne is in front of the masthead. This is the model credit, so that the reader knows who it is in the picture, the font colour follows with the theme of white and blue but it stands out more because it is bigger and bolder.
Media Studies Contents page textual analysis
Masthead This is the masthead, it is in three layers even though it is one word, this just makes the page look more interesting. Editorial They have put down some page numbers and given the contents of the page in a brief sentence, this makes it easy for the audience to find what they want to read. Layout The layout to this is actually quite simple, the page is not filled up with loads of writing and pictures it is in fact quite plain, it clearly says in bold features, then lists the main feature and it also says fashion, so if they want to go straight to the fashion part then they can do so. Main image This is the main image of the page, it will be the person who is also on the front cover of the magazine, she is well dressed in fashion and her hair and make up are done which shows she is very feminine. This image is different because she is laying down, and it is full body shot, this can make it more interesting for the audience. House style The house style of this page is the colours used are mainly black and grey and white, by doing this it makes the page look more sophisticated and professional.
Layout The layout of this page is slightly different because some of the contents information and pages have just got a brief sentence but some just have a picture and if you read this regularly then you will recognise this, it makes it more interesting and fills up the page more. Masthead This tells you the date and that it is the contents page, its got two mastheads because underneath it says DRUMMER which is bigger and bolder than contents, the word drummer also relates to the fact that it is a music magazine. Next to the word drummer it has a picture of a drum kit, because for some people visually they may look at the pictures first. Main image This is the main image and it is in black and white and shows a man with a big drum kit and playing them on stage, this might pull in the reader because they may want to find out about this feature. It says ‘regulars’ then has some of the contents of some pages in, and has a ‘+’ sign which means it includes this as well, the colour of the box is different to the other one and it has the regular pages that come in every issue and are the same but have new information on, this means that for fans that read this all the time they will already know that and for people that haven’t they can find out what pages are regularly in there.
Here it also shows the date and the website, this gives more information to the reader. Masthead This is highlighted in a black box and the writing stands out, it also has the symbol/name of the magazine. Main image This is the main image, it shows a band they are probably the main cover image too, this tells the reader that they will be in the magazine in a main feature. The picture is very casual and you can see all the band members. It has there name at the bottom corner in case you do not recognise them. Layout This shows you the features and similar to the previous one, it has the contents information to the far left f the page, and also similar to the other one it has an ‘every month’ box, which tells the reader what pages are regularly in the magazine. A magazine convention I have recognised is that next to the page number and just above the brief description they have sub headings, this is bolder and bigger so you can clearly and quickly find what you want. Lure This is your Lure, they will put the main review or article on the contents page so you look at it on the contents page and then will read it first, or you will know that it is important, it shows a picture and has a subheading review, then it has another mini contents page guide.
Masthead This is another convention that has appeared on another contents page, the word has been split into three levels, this just makes it look more interesting, it is in black and it is in big and bold font. Layout This layout is different to most magazine contents pages because there is barely any text and the image fills the whole page and all the text is at the top. I gives you the page numbers and the some of the font is in bold and some not, its is in italics and some is not, the variation makes it look better. Main image This image takes up the whole page and is quite misleading, the reader may find it misleading too and this may be the lure to make you read it. The image is in black and white, it is a long shot and shows quite a lot of the background, this is unusual for a contents page image. This is quite a plain contents page for a music magazine, there are not many colours used just the black and white image and the black text. This is something that is also unusual because it shows the front cover of a magazine, whether it is the cover to this issue I don’t know, this may be because of the subscription.
Masthead This masthead gives you the name of the magazine and says ‘this week’ this is instead of contents page and I think it is more friendly language, it is in big and bold which is a typical convention and the font type is quite square and harsh. This is what catches the readers attention first and is at the very top of the page. This page layout is very cluttered and there is loads of information and writing, it makes the page look very full and colourful. Layout This is the contents page information, it is to the right of the page and in a list, it gives page numbers and a brief description as well as sub headings, this makes it easier and quicker for the reader to find what they want. They give you a band index which gives you the location and page number of specific bands, so if you see the band you want to read about then it makes it a lot easier for you to find and read. This is very typical for a contents page to have a subscription box, this is the lure to get the readers to subscribe for the magazine and it gives a website and phone numbers. They are making a point of this feature because it is in nig and bold font, it also tells you the page number and this means they want you to read it.
I don’t think that it goes towards a specific gender, because it does not look particularly feminine or masculine. Main image This again takes up the whole page, it is two singers and they are posing, they have their hair and make up done and are wearing nice clothes. You k now that because there photograph is here that they will be featuring in this issue, Masthead This is something that this magazine always uses, the 3 layer of the word contents page, it just makes the page look more interesting. Layout They always use the same fonts, some in italics and some not, some bold and some not, this makes it look sophisticated, there contents information is to the left of this page, this is another typical convention. There is not particular colour theme, because there is not background, it just used black fonts and this works well because the background of the image is light.
Usually on a contents page, the masthead saying contents will stand out and be in big and bold font, this is different because although it is still at the top you do not notice it as much as they have chosen there images to be the main subject. The yellow writing stands out against the black box. Main image This is the main image and it shows a female music artist, because she is on the contents page, this means she will feature inside. The fact that she is a music artist relates to the genre. House Style They use the same font throughout, this gives a sophisticated and professional look to the magazine. Layout The layout is a typical convention to have the contents page numbers a brief descriptions to the left of the page down in a column, also there are sub-headings making it easier for you to find the page and feature that you would like to read. This shows the page number in the magazine that she will be on, this makes it quick and easy for the reader to find and read it. Mode of address This is a music magazine and therefore they need to cover the aspects and gives the audience ‘music’ news and entertainment, they use the words ‘V.I.P’ ‘Tuner’ and ‘Dub country.’ These all relate to music and therefore the readers are being given what they want, they are meeting the needs of the target audience.
Layout This is the typical convention of having the contents information in one column . There are sub headings which stand out and therefore the reader can find the subject that they want to read faster. Masthead This is the masthead and as I have previously analysed a NME magazine contents page, it seems that they always use the same masthead, this is a typical convention for them and this means that they are recognisable. This is also something that appears in every issue of their magazine, it gives the reader a ‘band index’ This gives the reader the page numbers as to what pages the bands are featured. Lure They usually have a lure line which is something to entice the reader in, the tag word is ‘PLUS’ which means you are getting more. Subscription This is where they are trying to lure you in to get a subscription to their magazine so that you stay loyal to them and they can get you to keep buying their magazine. Editorial A brief paragraph of information about what will be in the magazine article.
The background is a deep red and all of the writing is in white, this makes the font stand out well. Brand identity This is the logo of the magazine, they have put it on the contents page with the date underneath, so that the logo is constantly recognised. Layout This is a typical convention for magazines, to have the contents page numbers and information along the left hand side in a column, this makes it look professional. This is typical for the magazine Vibe, they have a three layer effect of the word ‘contents’ this just makes the page look more interesting. Main image This is the main image and it is a famous music artist that is also featured on the front cover, the reader will then know that he will be the main feature of the magazine, he is not wearing a top and this shows his tattoos, he is wearing a very heavily jewelled necklace with a decorated head on it, this kind of jewellery can show that he is a gangster. Also the fact that it has a section about fashion may be linked to this somehow. There are subheadings down the contents which will help the reader find and read the information that they want quickly, they sub heading s relate to music (this is a music magazine) which is following conventions, but there is also a sub-heading saying ‘fashion’ underneath, this means it does contain other stuff.
Masthead This is in quite big and bold font which is a typical feature, it is white writing with a black outline which stands out well against a red background. This shows the reader the date that this magazine is out. This shows that it is a monthly issue. Editorial The editor of the magazine has a big column to the right of the magazine. The editors column usually talks about the main features and how this magazine went. Their signature is at the bottom. Main image This is the main image, it looks like an old fashioned picture of a band, this shows that this band will be featuring in the magazine. There is a review box which tells you what reviews there are in the magazine and they are maybe suggesting that they are good so you should read them, this is another way of speaking to the audience through the magazine. Layout There is a lot of text on this contents page, which is unusual these days, there is a regulars column and this shows you what is in the magazine weekly, then there is the features page, which shows you what features are in the current magazine, again there are sub titles which can clearly show the reader where to look. There are three more images at the bottom of people faces and above is a sub-heading saying ‘This issue’ this means that these people either contributed to or are featuring in this magazine. By having a picture of them next to the text it is a more friendly way to talk through the magazine to the reader.
Media Studies Double-page spread textual analysis
The colours used are all quite light and neutral, and then the font is black so it stands out well. Layout The layout to this double-page spread is that the image takes up nearly both pages, and the start of the interview starts on the right page on the far right hand side, there is a small piece of text in the middle of the left page. The main feature of the page is the image, this shows the band the black eyed peas, which may or may not be recognised but they are very famous internationally. Three of the band members are slightly faded into the background and look smaller than will.i.am, this could mean that it is about the band but he is the main feature of this article. And the main line is Will he, won’t he? Which is a play on his name and also a rhetorical question. The text highlighted in black shows quotations. It has been separated from the rest so that you know it is a quote from the celebrity and tries to get the reader to read the interview. Picture credits Here are the picture credits and some editorial. It is over the top of the picture and underneath the heading. The page number, so you know what page it is on, typical convention to have page numbers.
Masthead This masthead is in big bold and black font so therefore stands out well against the white background, it also looks like the type of writing that you get when you get the words ‘FRAGILE’ printed on a parcel. It also looks slightly wonky like that too. Stand first, they use a stand first to start the interview. Main image This is a famous singer/rapper that is featuring in this issue of the magazine, he takes up a whole A4 page, he is dressed in casual clothes and is posing for the picture. Layout The text is similarly laid out to the masthead, all of the text is placed in the left page, it shows the interview and is laid out in column which is common for an editorial. Some of the font is in bright pink whereas the majority is in black, the pink text is the questions that he is being asked in the interview. The colours are quite light and neutral and the writing is black and stands out against the white background. The pink and bold text means that it is a quote by the famous guest. Because it stands out its one of the first things that the reader will see, and then because it is an important quote, they may be interested and want to read on.
Masthead Typical convention of a masthead, to be in big and bold font and the black writing stands out against the white background. Picture Credits Gives the name of the famous singer, for recognition. Layout All of the text is on one side, this is quite a typical convention for double-page spreads, the text is in columns, this is a typical editorial layout. A drop capital has been used. This is a typical convention for a magazine. Main image This is the main image and it takes up the whole A4 page, it is a close up of her face and she is smiling and looks very happy. Her hair and make up are done. Editorial This is text in columns to show the article, typical layout for an editorial. This text shows you the interview. Black writing against the white background shows up well. I think that this double page spread looks more feminine than masculine because of the image and the colours and fonts that re used. It looks like a page that is from a female gossip magazine/female music magazine.
I think that this page looks more feminine because of the font styles and the use of fashion and colours and the layout. It looks more similar to something that you would see in a female gossip magazine than for example an FHM magazine. The background is white with big grey letters saying USA, this is a big give-away that the article will be relating to America in some way. Masthead This is the masthead and heading of the article, it is in italics and looks quite a feminine style. It is in black and therefore stands out against the background. Main image The image takes up the majority of the page. The picture is in colour, this makes it stand out well against the white and background. In big grey font it says USA, and she is sat on an American flag, this relates well. She is a famous musician and she is wearing a short black dress and heeled boots showing her femininity and appearance. Layout It is set out in columns which is a typical feature for articles and editorials. The writing is black which makes it clear to read against the white background. They have used a drop capital, this is very common for magazines to use.
Page numbers are big and bold and clear, they are at the top of the page whereas they are usually at the bottom corner. This is challenging conventions. Layout The article is in columns, this is a typical convention for magazines, the writing is in 3 separate blocks, and has a brown background, these are over the top of the picture, because if the text didn’t have another background, then it would not be read clear enough. In the interview, the questions that are being asked are highlighted in bold and the answers are not. This is so that it makes it clear to the audience. The colour scheme is brown and white and it seems to look more masculine than feminine. Main image This image takes up both pages, but is behind the text, it is a casual picture and has been taken by some garages. It has not been beautified like some magazines make their models look. He is wearing a hat and a loose shirt and jeans , he does not look rich and famous. He has a serious look on his face and he is looking straight across the to the other side of the page. The scenery looks quite dull and depressing.
Masthead This is very good use of a heading. It is unusual in the sense that they have made it look like a ‘ransom letter’ by cutting out different letters from newspaper to make a cool effect, it makes it appeal more to younger people and is eye-catching and not just plain words typed out. Main Image This image is a mid close up, it shows her from the waist up. It shows what top she is wearing and he body and facial expressions. She looks casual but has had her hair and make up done, which is quite typical for a magazine model. She is Lily Allen an internationally famous singer and people will probably recognise her picture and know who she is. The colours used on this page are very simple. Black and white are the main colours and it works well because the brightly checked shirt she is wearing stands out and you notice her first. There are two pieces of text that are in red and this brings attention to the audience that this may be more important. The picture is taking up the whole of the right page and the text is all to the left, the heading goes onto the right page slightly but this just is so it can be large and spread out. On her left arm the heading goes over slightly on her arm, this another convention for magazines to have pictures and words overlapping. Layout The layout to this is very typical for a magazine article, as it is set out in columns, this makes it look professional and you can fit more text on the page. This is a convention of many magazines.
Main feature The main feature of this page is the image. It takes up the whole double-page spread. It is quite a colourful picture and shows the band at a gig playing with their fans surrounding them, this can speak to the audience through the bands friendliness and care towards their fans. This can form a relationship between the band, the magazine and the reader. This image is very colourful, and this makes the page interesting and eye catching. Masthead Because of the very colourful background the heading needs to stand out clearly. It is in a white, big and bold. Some of the text goes from one page and the word continues to the other, this is a typical convention. Editorial There is a small paragraph at the bottom of the righty page, it tells you a brief description about the Band Mumford and Sons, and their name is highlighted which tells the reader that is the important bit that they want you to see.
This is a Kerrang magazine and it is music genre. I think that this page looks more aimed for males because of the certain fonts, pictures and colours. At the top of the page is a box which says NEWS that stands out, this will catch the readers attention and they will then take notice and read this specific page. Also the words ‘World exclusive’ is a pull for the reader. Masthead This is the heading of this double-page spread,. I think that the colours and font work really well with the black and white pictures and the black background. The font looks like its ‘worn’ and old, the red and white stand out well and they look ‘loud’, which is representing the band’s music. The text is at a slant which just makes the page slightly more interesting. Layout This page has a big focus on images, people will look at images first, and are more likely to be attracted by images than lots of writing, so this page works well. The editorial is laid out in columns which is a typical convention for a magazine. I think that the layout for this is quite interesting and eye catching and that’s what magazine pages need to do, because if the page looks fun and colourful with lots of images, I personally would be more likely to read it. This column ion the right hand page is called ‘NEW MCR TRACKS, THE LOWDOWN’ and is called a teaser so that the if their are fans of MCR then they will be intrigued and want to find out more. Drop capital is used. This is very common for magazines and they are following conventions. To make it stand out even more, they use a different colour to the rest of the text. Main image This image is taking up the whole of the left side page and is of a band member of ‘My chemical Romance’ it is a mid shot as it is from the waist up, it is in black and white and this works well with the colours and style of this page. He is singing in this picture and they have caught him with his head down, this makes him look passionate about his music. Other images are used at the bottom, to show other band members working together and singing, this gives the audience a closer relationship with the magazine and the band.
Main image This is the main image and it takes up the whole of the left page. It shows a man sitting down and has a background if a wall in it, it is a mid shot and therefore from the waist up. He looks casual and is wearing sunglasses and looking straight at the camera. Layout This double-page spread is quite a simple layout. The left hand side contains the main image which fills the whole page and the left hand side is the article. The article is in columns which is a typical convention for magazines and it contains a heading. The layout of this magazine is following conventions. I personally think that the right page looks boring and i would probably not be persuaded to read all of that. Masthead The first heading is in quite modern style font and is white but outlined in black so it shows up against the white background. The second heading is in the same font but in black, this makes it more interesting and sophisticated. They have used photo shop to create a simple but cool effect around the image of the man, on the left page, this just makes it more interesting and professional.
Main image This image takes up the whole double page spread. It is a picture of the band members and one is looking straight on to the camera and the other one is looking away, they are both smiling and they are both mid shots. The image is in black and white which gives it a cool effect. Masthead They have used a cool masthead on this double-page spread. The heading stands out well because the picture is in black and white and it is also the background. They have used an effect which makes the text go from a bright orange and fades lighter into a white. Layout The layout to this page follows the typical conventions of a magazine. The text is in columns and this makes it look neater and more professional and it also means they can fit more text onto the page. A drop capital is used, this is a typical convention for magazines. The text is mainly in white but the introduction is in capitals and in bold. Some of the text is in white and some in orange. By using the same colours and theme it gives a more interesting and professional look to the magazine. It also catches the readers eyes and they will want to find out and read on.
Overall summery All of this research has really given me an insight as to what music magazines and the audience really want. After analysing the 10 different magazine front covers, I have found many typical conventions that each magazine uses, for example all Mastheads are a big focus, in large and bold fonts, this is something that I definitely need to take into consideration. I then analysed 10 different contents pages, I found out the typical conventions that are used in contents pages. I found that many were different and they didn’t always have the same house style. I can take this into consideration when designing my contents page. I analysed 10 double page spreads, they gave me ideas as to what to do on my own double page spreads. I found that many used a big main image that takes up one of the pages, and that the editorial was in columns. I will use this when designing my own pages.
Front cover analysis Summery I have analysed 10 front covers of music magazines. It has shown that all magazines use a big and bold masthead, they all include a main image that fills the whole page, and also sometimes the image will be in front of the text, these are all typical conventions for music magazines. Also they use lure’s which will attract the reader, and include model credits on the cover. Covers need to be bright and eye-catching to create an impact on the reader.
Contents Page analysis Summery I have analysed 10 contents pages from music magazines. This has showed me that they all use a heading with big font to catch the attention of the reader, then there is always an image, sometimes there is more than one, usually the main image will be the person on the cover, this shows the reader that the will be featuring in the magazine. They give a list of the page numbers with a brief description of what is on that page, this makes it clear and simple for the reader to find and read what they want. There is not always a house style to the contents pages, but they can be very simple which makes them look sophisticated or they can be very full like NME and be bright and interesting, I will decide which suits better for my magazine and use this.
Double –page spread analysis Summery I have analysed 10 double-page spreads, and have found many things I need to include on mine. They all have images on them, usually the person on the front cover will be the main article, they use a big image which takes up either one or both pages. They use backgrounds and fonts which stand out against each other, the editorial is always in columns, this makes it look professional and this way you can fit more text on. Drop capitals are used at the beginning of the article, this is a typical convention for magazines. There is usually a lure line in bold at the beginning of the article, it needs to be something interesting so it catches the readers eye. Another thing I found was common is they put quotes in bold and larger text than the rest, this works well for most magazines. The page numbers are usually at the bottom corner of the page. I shall take all of this into consideration when designing my own magazine to make it looks professional and of a high standard.
Audience research summery I have done a questionnaire and gathered my results in pictures and pie charts. I can now clearly see now, what exactly it is my audience want to see in a music magazine. I have found out that the majority of people would pay £3-£3.50 for a music magazine, this will be reflected in my own magazine. I found out that people would be most attracted to a magazine if it advertised; new gig tickets, free CDs or posters, I can use this information in my own magazine. The most popular music genre was Indie music, so therefore I can base my magazine on indie music which will be meeting the needs of my audience. They listened/downloaded their music mainly on YouTube, ITunes or illegally, this tells me that I can give information or links which shows them good places or songs to download. They gave me a list of TV music channels that they listen to, I can include these in magazine, also the majority said that they listen to the radio, so in my magazine I can also include radio stations, and new information from them. More people said they would attend the Reading Festival over the Isle of Wight festival, so in my magazine I can include information about the Reading festival for more reader interest. I also took the Find my tribe questionnaire to see what I was, I found the questionnaire easy to use and there was lots of multiple choice questions, but I did disagree with my result, but this can reflect other people’s personalities and social groups.

Textual analysis

  • 1. Media Studies Front cover textual analysis
  • 2. Masthead Date and cost Main image Model Credit Cover lines Cover lines Sub heading, lead article Barcode
  • 13. Media Studies Contents page textual analysis
  • 24. Media Studies Double-page spread textual analysis
