The document summarizes the key aspects of the K to 12 education program implemented in the Philippines. It aims to address the shortcomings of the previous 10-year basic education program by adding 2 more years of senior high school. This will align the Philippine education system with global standards. The K to 12 program enhances the curriculum, adopts a new curriculum framework, and makes education more relevant and skills-based. It is expected to benefit both students and society by improving competencies, opportunities, and long-term economic growth. The program began rolling out in 2012 and full implementation was targeted for 2016.
2. “Education is the key to the long-
term problems of the country. If
we fix basic education, we fic the
long-term problems of the
country. And if we fix the
country’s problems, we will build a
truly strong society we can
proudly call the Philippines.”
“We need to add two years to our basic
education… I want at least 12 years for our
public school children to give them an even
chance at succeeding.”

8. Our Current Basic Education
Curriculum is congested
Philippine elementary education is comparable
in length, duration and number of core subjects
with Brunei Darussalam, Malaysia and Singapore.
However a congested curriculum was noted
especially in Mathematics, Languages and
Sciences. Philippine secondary education is also
congested. – SEAMEO Innotech, 2011
Unlike Brunei, Malaysia and Singapore which
follows a spiral progression, basic education in the
Philippines is discipline-based. It does not offer
upper secondary education into disciplinary tracks
with electives leading to specializations. –
SEAMEO Innotech, 2011
