Academic Programme
The Academic Programme in MEP and Piping at the
MEP Centre are designed to find the leader in you and help
develop a strong base for your Technical skills. These
critical tools will help you face any challenge in your
career.
 The Academic Programme provides the latest
practices and trends in MEP & Piping education with
the flexibility to explore different areas of interest.
 Teaching methods include Industrial expertise,
exposure, simulations, group projects, and
independent work. Special emphasis is given to
team-based learning, to help students become
more effective team players and leaders.
 Students are placed in pre-defined groups and all
efforts are taken to have students from diverse
backgrounds in a group.
 A significant part of the MEP training experience
includes interactions with achievers from various
walks of life, who are invited to participate in
seminars, conferences and workshops. Students
acquire practical perspectives through interactions
with experts from various fields, who share their
challenges and draw upon experiences from their

Course Curriculum
The core courses taught in the Academic Programme
cover the basics and fundamentals of MEP and piping
Industries. Students have a full-time course load of four
to five courses, in each of the four core terms. These
courses are taught by a combination of expert faculty and
those visiting from industrial segments. The following core

Mechanical Supervisor Course – International
Valid Certification
MS – I : Introduction to fundamentals of mechanical –
Refrigeration and Air conditioning :
This topic will provide the student with a better understanding of
the fundamentals of Mechanical Refrigeration and Air conditioning
systems, definitions, Concept and System Classifications,
Legends and Coding system, Basic Calculation, Thumb-Rules,
Load estimation. Fundamentals of duct design calculations.
Scaling and unit conversion. Source material for this module is
Chapter 1, 2 and 3 of the UMC – I Code and the UMC – I Illustrated
Training Manual.
Fundamentals, Modes of Heat Transfer, Refrigerant,
Vapour Compression Refrigeration System, Air Conditioning,
Psychrometry and Thermal Process
MS – 2 : Intro to Codes and Standards :
This topic will provide the student with a better understanding of
the development, roles and uses of codes and standards in the
construction industry. Source material for this module is chapter
3 of the UMC – I Code and the UMC – I Illustrated Training Manual.
MS – 3 : Architectural and Structural Coordination :
This topic deals with various architectural and structural
provisions to be made during the planning stage. Few selected
cases shall be discussed. Many standard text books in
architecture and engineering by reputed authors are available as
source material. Specific focus on Mechanical activities is
required. A site visit with the faculty is essential. Institute’s own
faculty can teach this topic.
MS – 4 : Mechanical Terminology :
This topic covers the terminology of the trade. Definitions for
most words can be found in a dictionary, but there are technical
or trade terms which take on a special meaning when used in
relation to mechanical. The purpose of this module is to define
those terms for the student. Source material for this module is
chapter 2 of the UMC-I code and UMC – I Illustrated Training
Manual. Understanding of mechanical terminology will provide the
student with insight in to the development of the art of
mechanical. A list of abbreviations associated with the trade is
included in this module.
MS – 5 : Ventilation Air Supply :
This topic will provide the student with a better understanding of
code requirements relating to ventilation air supply and exhaust,
evaporative cooling systems and makeup-air requirements. For
direct-gas-fired heaters, industrial air heaters, and miscellaneous
heaters.

Draw plant room layouts for a “Plant Room Facility Including airconditioning, heating and water supply system” with plans,
elevations and sections of a selected case for study. Give
dimensions.
MS – 6 : Exhaust Systems:
This topic will provide the student with a better understanding of
code requirements relating to environmental air ducts, productconveying systems, and commercial hoods and kitchen
ventilation. Product conveying ducts-classification. Motors, fans,
and filters. Environmental air ducts. Makeup and exhaust-air
ducts. Domestic range vents. Design of product conveying
velocities, duct clearances. Reduction of duct clearance with
specified forms of protection.
MS – 7 : Duct Systems :
This topic will provide the student with a better understanding of
code requirements relating to UMC Standard No. 6-2. Ducts and
plenums for cooling and heating systems, Ventilation and
exhaust, or product-conveying systems. Source material for this
module is chapter 6 of the UMC-1 code and the UMC-1 Illustrated
Training Manual.
Types and classification of ducts (metal and Non-metal ducts),
material used, and duct support system, Protection against Flood
Damage, Insulation of ducts, R value determination. Smoke

This topic will provide the student with a better Understanding of
code requirements relating to Determination of Indoor

MS – 9 : Chimneys and Vents :
This topic will provide the student with a better understanding of
code requirements relating to this chapter shall govern the
venting of fuel-burning appliances. Source material for this
module is chapter 8of the UMC-1 code and the UMC-1 Illustrated
Training Manual.
Venting of Gas Appliances, Specification for venting, ventilating

MS – 10 : Installation of specific appliances :
This topic will provide the student with a better understanding of
code requirements relating to the vented decorative appliances
and room heaters, Air-conditioning and warm-air heating systems
Source material for this module is chapter 9 of the UMC-1 code
and the UMC-1 Illustrated Training Manual.
This chapter is applicable primarily to non-industrial-type electric
or gas utilization appliances and installations. Plant room
installations of Heating Ventilation and Air-Conditioning Appliances
and Heat pumps. Central Heating Boilers and Furnaces,
Temperature-or pressure-Limiting Devices. Low-Water cut off,
Temperature Limit Controls, Steam safety and pressure-Relief
valves, Furnace Plenums and Air Ducts. Cooling units used with
heating Boilers. Clothes Dryers-Exhaust Ducts for type 1 Clothes
Dryers. Non-Recirculating Direct gas-Fired Industrial Air Heaters.
Prohibited Installations. Support, Clearance’s and access, wind
protection. Single and Multi floor installations, mounting on Noncombustible Floor. Household cooking Appliances. FloorMounted units. Mounting in commercial garages and Aircraft

Using heat load estimate form, design and select HVAC
systems for a multi-story building and compare the BOQ
with actual values.

Assignment 3 : Topic Presentation
Based on the topics covered in this semester, students can select
any topic; refer to codes, text books, professional magazines,
technical papers published and websites of manufactures and
make a presentation in 10 minutes. Students can work in a group
of two. The presentation shall be reviewed along with an external
examiner. Marks are assigned for both, the contents as well as
presentation.

Ms – 12 : Refrigeration Systems , Cooling Towers :
This topic will provide the student with a better understanding of
code requirements relating to Understanding of code
requirements relating to refrigeration systems and cooling towers.
Specified in chapter 2 of UMC-1 code and ITM.
Refrigeration Systems, equipment, and devices, including the
replacement of parts, alternations, and substitution of a different
refrigerant.
Cooling Towers: Definitions, classifications, types and working of
different types of cooling towers, sizing, Selection, installation of
cooling towers for different applications.
MS – 13 : Hydronics Steam and Water piping :
This topic will provide the student with better understanding of
code requirements relating to Hydronics- Steam and water piping
source material for this module is Chapter 12 of the UMC-1 Code
and the UMC-1 Illustrated Training Manual.
Basic types of Hydronic systems Steam or hot water chilled water,
Classification: Flow generation (forced flow or gravity flow),
Temperature (low, medium and high), Pressurization (low,
medium and high), piping arrangement, plumbing arrangement,
Piping arrangements.
Hydronic systems may be divided into several piping
arrangement categories:
Single or one-pipe, Two pipe steam (direct return or reverse
return), Three pipe, Four pipe, Series loop

hot and cold water supply system including controls, for a
selected case of study.
Ms – 14 : Fuel gas Piping, Fuel Piping & Fuel supply :
This topic will provide the student with better understanding of
code requirements relating to the installation of fuel-gas piping
systems and fuel gas utilization equipment that are supplied with
natural gas; manufactured gas; liquefied petroleum gas(LPG), ;in
the vapour phase only; LPG air mixtures; mixtures of these gases
; and gas air mixtures in the flammable range. Source material for
this module is Chapter -14 of the UMC-1Code and the UMC-1

Ms – 15 : Process Piping :
This topic will provide the student with a better understanding of
code requirements relating to the installation of process piping in
or in conjunction with a building or structure or located upon the
premises. Source material for this module is chapter 14 of the
UMC-1 code and the UMC-1 Illustrated Training Manual.
MS – 16 : Solar Systems :
This topic will provide the student with a better understanding of
code requirements relating to Applications of technology and
systems to residential, industrial projects. Source material for this
module is chapter 15 of the UMC-1 code and the UMC-1 Illustrated
Training Manual.
Solar Thermal: This topic covers provisions required for a
centralized solar hot water system for multi-apartment buildings
with reference to pressure and temperature controls specified in
Chapter 15 of UMC-1 code and ITM and the USEC-1, Expert guest
speaker can be requested to cover this topic and more…
Solar Photovoltaic: This topic covers: Introduction to solar energy
and solar Photovoltaic systems. Understanding of the practical
applications of solar energy harvesting and utilization.
MS – 17 : Stationary Power Plants, Fuel Cells :
This topic will provide the student with a better understanding of
code requirements relating to Source material for his module is
Chapter 16 of the UMC-1 Code and the UMC-1 Illustrated Training
Manual.
MS – 18 : Standard, Reference Standards, Appendices-A, B, C
& D : This topic discusses Appendix A, B, C & D of UMC-1 the
students will gain greater understanding of UMC standard 2-2 and
6.2, standard 6-2 standard for metals. And UMC Standard 6-2
standard metal ducts. UMC standard 6-5 standards for installation
of factory made air ducts. Procedure for Gas equipment in
operation. Installation and testing of oil (liquid) or fuel fired
equipment.
MS – 19 : Introduction to Green Concepts:
Based on the need this topic covers introduction to alternate
energy systems, alternate cooling and heating systems, NonConventional Energy sources and its application in green
buildings.
MS – 20 : Introduction to Product Listing Procedure :
This topic covers the need for introduction of third party testing
and listing of mechanical products including but not limited to
heating ventilation an Air-Conditioning products.
Assignment 5 :
Draw layout and sizing of integrated power plant and centralized
HVAC plant including cooling tower layout, for a selected case for
study.

Assignment 6:
Visit any HVAC work site and submit a report on observations and
recommendations based on the provisions of UMC-1
Project Work:
Students are allowed to select the topic of their project work
subject to approval of the scope by the faculty. Maximum 4
students can work in a group for a common topic. Students are
expected to visit the site, shops, etc. They can discuss the topic
with manufactures, owners, consultants, contractors and
mechanics. The project report comprising drawings, sketches,
photographs and description must be elaborate to cover the topic
in its entirely. The drawings should specify sizing: must
accompany appropriate design calculations and the report should
be hand written. The oral examination based on the project work
submitted. Shall be conducted in the presence of an external
examiner.
Note: Uniform Mechanical Code (UMC) book of worth will be given
free of cost
Course Duration: 60 days @ 3hrs a day
Batch Schedule: 6th of Every Month & 21st of Every Month
( Institute remain closed on Sundays & Govt. Public Holidays )
Minimum Qualification Requirement:
Fresh Diploma/Graduate in Mechanical/ Civil Environment/
Architect or Basic Graduate
ITI with 1 – 2 years of work experience, PUC with 5 years of work
experience in relevant field

Plumbing Construction Management Course –
International Valid Certificate
PCM-1 INTRO TO CODES AND STANDERS (2 HOURS)
This topic will provide the student with better understanding of
the development, roles and uses of codes and standards in
the construction industry. Source material for this course is
chapter 3 of the UPC-I code and the UPC-I illustrated training
manual Approval, AHJ, alternative materials, minimum
standards sewers required, industrial wastes, workman ship,
prohibited fittings and practices water conservation, protection
of pipelines and structures, water proofing, rat proofing,

PCM-2 ARCHITEURAL AND STRUCTURAL COORDINATION (6
HOURS)
This topic deals with various architectural and structural

required. A site visit with the faculty is essential.

the architects. Structural parameters such as sunken and
toilets, location of columns and beams post- tension slabs,
importance of lead walls.
PCM -3 PLUMBING TERMINOLOGY (4 HOURS)
This topic covers the terminology of the trade. Definition for
most words can be found in a dictionary, but thre are technical
is trade terms which takes on a special meaning when used
in relation to plumbing. The purpose of these courses is
defined those terms for the students. Source material for this
course is chapter-2 of the UPC-I Code and UPC –I illustrated
training manual. Understanding of plumbing terminology will

clarifiers, grease inspectors, sizing, FOG disposal, oil and sand

indirect waste piping depending upon the nature of the
contents or systems served by the fixture, appliance or
equipment. Requirements for specific types of installations
and the proper methods to install indirect waste piping are

drainage system. Source material for this course is chapter 9
of the UPC-I code and the UPC-I illustrated training manual.
Vent requirement, trap seal protection, material, vent
connections, flood rim level, termination, vent stacks, water
curtain and hydraulic jump, horizontal and vertical wet venting,
combination waste and vent system,cleanouts,venting of
interceptors. Introduction to vent sizing, sizing of combination
vents etc.
Assignment 2:
Prepare layout of internal and external (outside the toilet)
SWRV pipes and fittings of a selected case for study. If
possible, write pipe diameter.
Assignment 3: topic presentation
Based on the topic covered in this semester, students can
select any topic; refer to codes, text books, professional
magazines, technical papers published and websites of
manufacturers and make a presentation in 10 minutes.
Students can work in a group of two. The presentation shall be
reviewed along with an external examiner. Marks are assigned
for both, the contents as well s presentations.
PCM-9 STORM DRAINAGE (4 HOURS)
This topic provides the guidelines to collect/capture the storm
water and discharge it in a safe and efficient manner. Source

WSFU sizing calculations.
PCM – 11 SOLAR HOT WATER (2 HOURS)
This topic covers provisions required for a centralized solar hot
water system for multi apartment buildings with reference to
pressure and temperature controls specified in Chapter 6 of
UPC – I code and ITM. Expert guest speaker can be requested
to cover this topic.
Introduction to solar water systems. System components,
panels, hot water tanks, electrical backup, safety measures,
auto controls, hot water supply and return systems, various
insulation materials , control valves, introduction to the other
methods of hot water generation.
PCM-12 GRAY- WATER SYSTEMS (2 HOURS)
This topic provides the student with an understanding of gray
water systems and reclaimed water systems. The system
introduced in this course provide for a safe method to use
waste water from lavatories, baths, showers and clothes
washers for underground land scopes irrigation as well as
reclaimed sanitary waste water (black water) to flush fixtures
that don’t need potable water for their use. Source material
for this course is chapter 16 of the UPC-I code and the UPC-I

This topic discusses appendix K and L UPC-I. The student will
gain a greater understanding of (K) private sewage disposal
system, and (L) alternate plumbing systems.
(k) Where permitted, septic tanks, leach lines/leach beds.
Seepage pits, soil properties, interceptors, construction,
maintenance, industrial waste, location of sewage disposals,
approvals. (L) Engineered plumbing systems, WSFU and DFU,
drainage and vent systems, introduction to vacuumed
drainage, single.
Assignment 5:
Draw layout of external development comprising storm
drainage, underground sewer cold water supply, for a selected
case for study.
PCM-15 CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT (6 HOURS)
This topic covers various aspects of managing plumbing
installations at the site. Many standard text books by reputed
authors are available on the topic of “construction
management as source material. Specific focus on plumbing
activities is required. A site visit with the faculty is essential.

are expected to visit the site, shops, etc. They can discuss the
topic with the manufacturers, owners, consultants,
contractors, and plumber’s .the project report comprising
drawings, sketches, photo graphs and description must be
elaborate ton cover the topic in its entirety. The drawings
should specify dimensions and the report should be hand
written. The oral examination based on the project work
submitted, shall be conducted in the presence of an externals
examiner.
Exam: You need to pass the exam conducted by Dhanush, IPA

These critical tools will help you face any challenge in your career.  The Academic Programme provides the latest practices and trends in MEP & Piping education with the flexibility to explore different areas of interest.  Teaching methods include Industrial expertise, exposure, simulations, group projects, and independent work. Special emphasis is given to team-based learning, to help students become more effective team players and leaders.  Students are placed in pre-defined groups and all efforts are taken to have students from diverse backgrounds in a group.  A significant part of the MEP training experience includes interactions with achievers from various walks of life, who are invited to participate in seminars, conferences and workshops. MEP Centre Academic Prospectus Mechanical Supervisor Course – International Valid Certification MS – I : Introduction to fundamentals of mechanical – Refrigeration and Air conditioning : This topic will provide the student with a better understanding of the fundamentals of Mechanical Refrigeration and Air conditioning systems, definitions, Concept and System Classifications, Legends and Coding system, Basic Calculation, Thumb-Rules, Load estimation. Fundamentals of duct design calculations. Scaling and unit conversion. Source material for this module is Chapter 1, 2 and 3 of the UMC – I Code and the UMC – I Illustrated Training Manual. Fundamentals, Modes of Heat Transfer, Refrigerant, Vapour Compression Refrigeration System, Air Conditioning, Psychrometry and Thermal Process MS – 2 : Intro to Codes and Standards : This topic will provide the student with a better understanding of the development, roles and uses of codes and standards in the construction industry. Source material for this module is chapter 3 of the UMC – I Code and the UMC – I Illustrated Training Manual. MS – 3 : Architectural and Structural Coordination : This topic deals with various architectural and structural provisions to be made during the planning stage. Few selected cases shall be discussed. Many standard text books in architecture and engineering by reputed authors are available as source material. Specific focus on Mechanical activities is required. A site visit with the faculty is essential. Institute’s own faculty can teach this topic. MS – 4 : Mechanical Terminology : This topic covers the terminology of the trade. Definitions for most words can be found in a dictionary, but there are technical or trade terms which take on a special meaning when used in relation to mechanical. The purpose of this module is to define those terms for the student. Source material for this module is chapter 2 of the UMC-I code and UMC – I Illustrated Training Manual. Understanding of mechanical terminology will provide the student with insight in to the development of the art of mechanical. A list of abbreviations associated with the trade is included in this module. MS – 5 : Ventilation Air Supply : This topic will provide the student with a better understanding of code requirements relating to ventilation air supply and exhaust, evaporative cooling systems and makeup-air requirements. For direct-gas-fired heaters, industrial air heaters, and miscellaneous heaters. © 2013 MEP Centre. All Rights Reserved. 8 Mechanical Supervisor Course: The objective of this program is to train and equip mechanical Installation, Commissioning and O&M Managers/Supervisors to equip with code based on education programme for imparting training on latest knowledge in the related codes & standards applicable to the mechanical trade keeping in view of the present and future global industrial requirements. So that semi-skilled/skilled man power of the country may become enable to compete in the global market.

MEP Centre Academic Prospectus Assignment 1: Draw plant room layouts for a “Plant Room Facility Including airconditioning, heating and water supply system” with plans, elevations and sections of a selected case for study. Give dimensions. MS – 6 : Exhaust Systems: This topic will provide the student with a better understanding of code requirements relating to environmental air ducts, productconveying systems, and commercial hoods and kitchen ventilation. Product conveying ducts-classification. Motors, fans, and filters. Environmental air ducts. Makeup and exhaust-air ducts. Domestic range vents. Design of product conveying velocities, duct clearances. Reduction of duct clearance with specified forms of protection. MS – 7 : Duct Systems : This topic will provide the student with a better understanding of code requirements relating to UMC Standard No. 6-2. Ducts and plenums for cooling and heating systems, Ventilation and exhaust, or product-conveying systems. Source material for this module is chapter 6 of the UMC-1 code and the UMC-1 Illustrated Training Manual. Types and classification of ducts (metal and Non-metal ducts), material used, and duct support system, Protection against Flood Damage, Insulation of ducts, R value determination. Smoke Dampers, Fire Dampers, and ceiling Dampers. Temperature classification of Operating Elements, Use of Under-Floor Space as supply plenum for Dwelling Units. Automatic Shutoffs and more…. MS – 8 : Combustion Air : This topic will provide the student with a better Understanding of code requirements relating to Determination of Indoor Combustion Air, Sizing of indoor & outdoor air opening, Standard Method.
