The Pillowman By: Martin McDonagh
Exposition Takes place in present day A police interrogation room The main characters are Katurian, Michal, Tupolski, and Ariel The protagonist is Katurian, who is a writer of two stories about murder
Inciting Incident Katurian and Michal are being interrogated on murders. Katurian wrote about them in his stories, and Michal admits to killing three children. Katurian denies it.
Conflict Katurian did not commit the murders and doesn’t feel the need to be questioned about it. He is a writer, and wants to get back to what he loves. It is his brothers fault and he feels that Michal is to blame.
Rising Action Katurian actually had killed his brother and the three other children. Ariel and Tupolski both question him but he cannot answer a single one. Katurian did in fact kill his parents so Ariel and Tupolski decide that he deserves to die for what he did.
Climax Needing to erase all memory of the stories, Ariel insists he is going to burn all of his books. As Ariel is about to torch the papers,Katurianstands up and tells the story about how the Pillowman came to Michal when he was young
Falling Action Midway through his speech, Katurian is shot and killed In the end, Ariel does not burn Katurian’s stories
Katurian I would classify Katurian as a static character. He remains the same throughout the play. He is a writer and does not go through a change. He committed murder in the beginning and tells lies saying he did not kill his brother, when in actuality, he did. Katurian did not get along with his parents which ultimately led to their murder. He wrote terrible stories about death which came true.
