As PaaS is becoming more prevalent than ever, most PaaS environments and frameworks are still strongly opinionated and allow for very limited control and extensibility. Extending a PaaS framework requires deep understating of its internals at best, and in many cases in not even possible. Cloudify, a new open source PaaS framework, has taken a different approach, by using recipes (As opposed to heavyweight coding and platform extension) as means to introduce new application stacks to the PaaS layer. You can think of it as extending the recipe model of Chef to support application level concerns, such as orchestration, dependency management, multi-tier and multi-host deployments, monitoring and autoscaling. This presentation covers the foundations of Cloudify, and how it leverages Chef as a key enabler for an open PaaS framework.

A lot of data is best represented as time series: Operational data, financial data, and even in data warehouses the dominant dimension is often time. We present Chronix, a time series database based on Apache Solr and Spark which is able to handle trillions of time series data points and perform interactive queries. Chronix Spark is open source software and battle-proven at a German car manufacturer and an international telco. We demonstrate several use cases of Chronix from real-life. Afterwards we lift the curtain and deep-dive into the Chronix architecture esp. how we're using Solr to store time series data and how we've hooked up Solr with Spark. We provide some benchmarks showing how Chronix has outperformed other time series databases in both performance and storage-efficiency. Chronix is open source under the Apache License (http://chronix.io).

Since Doug Cutting invented Hadoop and Amazon Web Services released S3 ten years ago, we've seen quite a bit of innovation in large-scale data storage and processing. These innovations have enabled engineers to build data infrastructure at scale, many of them fail to fill their scalable systems with useful data, struggling to unify data silos or failing to collect logs from thousands of servers and millions of containers. Fluentd and Embulk are two projects that I've been involved to solve the unsexy yet critical problem of data collection and transport. In this talk, I will give an overview of Fluentd and Embulk and give a survey of how they are used at companies like Microsoft and Atlassian or in projects like Docker and Kubernetes.

Enjoy! --Michael Apache Kafka is a high-throughput distributed messaging system that has become a mission-critical infrastructure component for modern data platforms. Kafka is used across a wide range of industries by thousands of companies such as Twitter, Netflix, Cisco, PayPal, and many others. After a brief introduction to Kafka this talk will provide an update on the growth and status of the Kafka project community. Rest of the talk will focus on walking the audience through what's required to put Kafka in production. We’ll give an overview of the current ecosystem of Kafka, including: client libraries for creating your own apps; operational tools; peripheral components required for running Kafka in production and for integration with other systems like Hadoop. In this talk, Kevin Klues presents an open source TensorFlow framework for distributed training on DC/OS. This framework takes the pain out of deploying distributed TensorFlow, so you can spend less time worrying about your deployment strategy and more time building out your model. Speaker Bio: Kevin Klues is an Engineering Manager at Mesosphere where he leads the DC/OS Cluster Operations team. Prior to joining Mesosphere, Kevin worked at Google on an experimental operating system for data centers called Akaros. He and a few others founded the Akaros project while working on their Ph.Ds at UC Berkeley. In a past life, Kevin was a lead developer of the TinyOS project, working at Stanford University, the Technical University of Berlin, and the CSIRO in Australia. When not working, you can usually find Kevin on a snowboard or up in the mountains in some capacity or another.

The application landscape inside our data center is changing: Along with the trend of moving toward microservices and containers, there are a number of new distributed data processing frameworks such as Kafka or Cassandra being released on a weekly basis.
