Bio
Volker Fricke, Telematics Solutions, IBM Pervasive Computing
Volker Fricke, studied electro-technology, communications technology
from 1977 to 1980 at the professional school in Wiesbaden, Germany.
He joined IBM Germany 1980 as a test engineer. Since 1987 he has
worked as a Software developer for Embedded Systems at IBM
Development Laboratory in Boeblingen, Germany.
Since 1997 he has been working on customer projects as a consultant on
embedded systems design and project manager for in-vehicle
information systems at IBM Pervasive Computing. Since 2004 he re-
presents IBM in the OSGi Vehicle Expert working group in Europe. He
leads the development of IBM Telematics Reference Implementation
(TRI) Solution for IBM Pervasive Computing.

Norwich Union
• Business Need
– In order to establish its "Pay-As-You-Drive" pilot insurance program,
Norwich Union (NU) needed an IT solution that would provide an
infrastructure for information collection and analysis, as well as
providing data security to protect customers' confidential information.
• Benefits
– The information the system collects is personal and private to the
driver in question. IBM provided data security expertise so NU can
ensure privacy protection and assure drivers that their data is
protected.
– Provides motorists with fairer insurance rates based on actual use of
their vehicles.
– NU will better understand the data collected through analysis and
build more flexible, enhanced insurance policies to meet their
customers' needs - with the ability to assess risk more accurately and
set the price accordingly

• Business Need
– Hyundai Motor Company wanted to implement built-in wireless
devices in its automobiles with sophisticated wireless solutions.
– New services are: Airbag deployment notification, remote theft-alarm
and stolen vehicle tracking via GPS, a portal delivering news updates,
weather, stock quotes, email and Internet access, data
synchronization for PDAs, mobile phones and other devices, 24-hour
assistance and concierge services
• Benefits
– Hyundai preserves its leadership in the Korean marketplace and
should be able to supply 50,000 built-in devices with its new cars.
– Product differentiation through telematics and enhanced customer
relationships

Abstract
The eco-system created by connecting vehicles to the network, and
sending and receiving information to and from these vehicles is called
Telematics. Current Telematics systems are primarily designed to
provide safety and security services to vehicle owners and operators,
and currently do not deliver much e-business benefit back to the
vehicle manufacturer or other related industries. This solution, the
Telematics Reference Implementation (TRI), is designed to showcase
how IBM technologies can put together end-to-end solutions, and
e-business value can be demonstrated with actual customer use cases.
TRI would be unique in the industry in demonstrating all the elements
of the solution in one place: from vehicle through wireless service provider
infrastructure through a variety of back-end services and applications.
