The final of the 1996 Euro Cup saw the Czech Republic
hoping to repeat Euro 1976 when Czechoslovakia defeated
West Germany; the Germans were aiming to win their third
European Championship. Patrick Berger scored from a

Question 2

Answer
The last thing X recalls hearing on March 17,2012 as Bolton
played Tottenham in an FA Cup quarter final, was his
colleague Zat K ight s rea i g at hi to o e a k . He
tried to do as Knight had suggested, to backpedal and fulfill
his defensive duties. But, gripped by an inexplicably severe
heada he, he fou d he ould t ru . He felt horri ly o fused;
his head spinning, his vision scrambled, he saw two Scott
Parkers ahead of him. And then he just went down. He
does t re all ollapsi g. But o e thi g is ertai : y the ti e
his head hit the White Hart Lane turf, technically he was dead.
It was one of the most shocking things seen at a football
ground: a young player dying in plain sight. In front of 35,000
spectators and millions watching on television, X, a player
renowned throughout the game for his fitness, had suffered a
massive cardiac arrest.
Question 3
As the Bolton and Tottenham medical teams, augmented by a
leading heart specialist leaping from the crowd to help,
attempted to resuscitate him, for over an hour his heart did
not function. He was gone. Nothing sparked it back into
action: adrenalin injections, massage, the vigorous application
of a defibrillator, he was not responding to anything. But
then, in the hospital operating theatre to where he had been
rapidly dispatched, the doctors tried one last thing. Under an
electrical stimulus, fully 76 minutes after it stopped, his heart
burst back into a beat. As inexplicably as it had stopped, it
started again.
Those words of K ight s were prophetic: X did come back.

Some sports moments simply defy all reasonable
comprehension—Mickey Mantle blasting a 565-foot home run,
Secretariat winning the 1973 Belmont Stakes by 31 lengths,
and Tiger Woods winning the U.S. Open by 15 strokes.
But the feat that may top them all came in the 1968 Olympic
Games in Mexico City. X, a 22-year-old New York native, barely
qualified for the Olympic long jump finals after fouling in two of
his qualifying runs. Fortunately, he did. The following day in the
finals, X took off down the runway in the thin air of Mexico City.
After exactly 19 loping strides, he hit the board perfectly,
stretched out with his legs and flew through the air like no one
ever had. And finally, he hit the sand in the pit below.
There was no doubt that he had broken the world record,
the only question was by how much. X was so excited and
emotionally drained that doctors claim he suffered a
"cataplectic seizure." Some critics devalued the jump,
claiming the rarified air and the wind of 2.0 meters per
second was more responsible for the record. But all the
other competitors jumped in the same elements and
strangely, none of them came close. The defending Olympic
champion Lynn Davies told X, "You have destroyed this

strangest races in motorsport history. A field of 20 cars should have

each from Ferrari, Jordan and Minardi) were on the starting grid. It
was the result of a bizarre sequence of events which left motorsport
fans feeling so shortchanged it nearly drove F1 out of the U.S. for

The controversy unfolded after a punctured tire during
practice caused Ralf Schumacher's Toyota to crash at the
circuit's banked final turn - the fastest part of the track.
Toyota used Michelin rubber and, after investigation into
the tire failure, Michelin advised the seven teams who used
their tires -Renault, McLaren, Williams, Toyota, BAR, Sauber
and Red Bull - not to race, to avoid any further accidents.
Ferrari, Jordan and Minardi used Bridgestone tyres and
therefore participated in the race without any problem.

Some sports moments simply defy all reasonable comprehension—Mickey Mantle blasting a 565-foot home run, Secretariat winning the 1973 Belmont Stakes by 31 lengths, and Tiger Woods winning the U.S. Open by 15 strokes. But the feat that may top them all came in the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. X, a 22-year-old New York native, barely qualified for the Olympic long jump finals after fouling in two of his qualifying runs. Fortunately, he did. The following day in the finals, X took off down the runway in the thin air of Mexico City. After exactly 19 loping strides, he hit the board perfectly, stretched out with his legs and flew through the air like no one ever had. And finally, he hit the sand in the pit below.

The defending Olympic champion Lynn Davies told X, "You have destroyed this e e t.” Such as his perfor a ce that superlati e performances like that came to be called as Y after his name in future.
