In the Spring Semester the Interior Design Sophomore Studio , College of Human Ecology , East Carolina University took on the challenge of designing houses that are sustainable and more varied than plans that might have been generated to date. This is in keeping with the University's committment to be a leader in engaged scholarship as well as community service. The students were excited that their work would be put to use. So what we offer here are 18 new plans for Habitat Houses that can be used by anyone who might profit from the student work.
Each house has an imaginary family that the student designers kept in mind in view of the design profession that they will soon join is a service profession: there will be clients for all of the projects that these students will design as practicing interior designers. While these families are fictional , essentially placemarkers in the process of learning to design for others you are welcome to substitute your family, friends or members of the community for the prototype client and use the organizational or program drawings, the plans, elevations and sections and scchedules to extend the student work. We are at the end of our semester so we dedicate our efforts to your use.

3. • The Simmons family lost their home
to Hurricane Irene in August of 2011
• They live in Hobucken, North
Carolina where Hurricane Irene
slammed into the coast
• Their home was completely
destroyed and they have been
displaced, living in a homeless
shelter, ever since.
• Chris, the father heard about the
Habitat for Humanity program and
decided to apply. He was tired of
his two children, Sophie and Josh,
being exposed to things that young
children should not see in the
homeless shelter. He and his wife
Erin were ecstatic when they
learned they would be getting a new
home and were eager to pitch in to
help.
1 FAMILY PROFILE
S1
4. • Sophie and Josh each need their own room and a
bathroom separate from their parents.
• Chris and Erin need their own private master and
bathroom to escape from the kids for a little while.
• The Simmons’ need a deck so the children have some
outside space in which to play.
• Erin would love to have a large kitchen and dining space
so she can entertain in her new home.
• With two small children, Erin and Chris would like to have
a large living room to serve as the communal gathering
spot, but still have enough space for the children to play
separately.

5. “Haven”
•The Simmons family have been living in a homeless
shelter which has given little to no privacy and has
considerably lowered their pride. They cannot wait to
have their own home again, their own little “haven”.

6. • Chris has a lead on a new job that would be a slight pay
increase. Maybe it will help to buy a new car soon since the
hurricane destroyed their old Ford.
• The kids, Sophie and Josh are so excited that they get to start
picking out paint colors and bedroom furniture.
• Erin is just so happy that her new home is close to being
finished. She is having so much fun picking out colors and
furnishings.

7. • We have discussed landscaping options with a
focus on what to use on the west side of the
house.
• We have picked crate myrtles, and box-wood hedges to
shade the windows from the west sun.
• Door/window schedules have been done and finishes
are being chosen and awaiting approval.
