Entrevista de Ana Montes a una estadounidense que estuvo en la toma de posesión de Obama

El 20 de enero de 2009 pasará a nuestras memorias como
el día en que Barack Hussein Obama se convirtió en el
primer presidente de color de los Estados Unidos. ¿Pero
sabemos realmente como se vivió ese día en la piel de un
americano o lo que piensan acerca de su nuevo
presidente? Elizabeth Rasberrry, 19 años, estudiante de
College, estuvo en Washington DC.
P.- ¿A qué distancia está Washington de tu ciudad? No es
demasiado importante, porque apuesto que no fuiste a pié. Así
pues, ¿cómo fuiste hasta allí?
Q.- How far is your city from Washington? It isn’t very important,
because I bet you didn’t go on foot! Haha. So, how did you get to it?
R.- Vivo en Indiana, que por cierto está bastante lejos. Fueron
550 millas, lo siento, no se cuantos kilómetros es eso, y nos llevó
unas 8 horas aproximadamente conducir a DC.
A.- I live in Indiana so that is actually quite far...by the way. It was

2. about 550 miles, I don't know what that is in km sorry! And it took
me and my friend about 8 hours to drive to DC.
P.- ¿Tuviste algún tipo de complicación en la carretera fuera de
lo habitual?
Q.- Was the traffic heavier than usually or did you have any
complication?
R.- Cogimos algunos atascos y desvíos, pero todo fue bastante
rápido y llevadero, porque fuimos todo el rato escuchando
música y riendo.
A.- We took some diversions and traffic jams, but it went by fast
cus we listened to music and laughed and of course listened to
Coldplay.
P.- Bien, ¿cuándo llegasteis a Washington?
Q.- Well, when did you arrived in Washington?
R.- Llegamos dos días antes de la toma de posesión (Obama’s
Inauguration).
A.- We arrived about two days before the Obama's Inauguration .
P.- Fue un acto histórico, por lo que cabe esperar la multitud de
personas que debía haber allí. ¿Qué clase de gente era?
¿Notaste alguna mayoría? ¿Quizás la gente de color?
Q.- It was an historic event, so i guess there were a lot of people!
What kind of people were they? Maybe most of them were black
people?

3. R.- Sí, realmente había mucha. Todos los actos fueron
gratuitos, ¡incluso el increíble concierto de la víspera y todo! El
día anterior hubo casi medio millón en el concierto. ¡Había
muchísima! Pero no tanta como el día de la toma de posesión.
Hubo una buena mezcla de todas las clases de personas, pero de
todas formas la mayoría en sus 30 y para abajo. Y sí, muchos
afroamericanos apoyando a Obama. Todo el mundo estaba muy
emocionado y feliz de estar allí
A.- Yes, actually there were a lot of people. It was all free, the
concert and everything, there were almost 1/2 million people at the
concert!!! There were so many! But of course not like the 20th! There
was a good mix of all kinds of people, mostly people prolly in their
30s and under though. And yes, lots of African Americans showed
up for Obama :) Everyone was very exited and happy to be there!
P.- La prensa dijo que allí habría un importante, duro y
abundante despliegue policial, agentes del FBI (ocultos,
mezclados entre los ciudadanos en las calles)… y muchas maneras
diferentes de proteger la seguridad del nuevo presidente o
responder en caso de catástrofe. En tu opinión, ¿esta seguridad
fue extrema, buena, suficiente o podrían haberla mejorado?
Q.- The press said that there would be a very important, hard and
abundant police deployment, FBI’s agents (concealed, mixed among
citizens in the streets)… and a lot of different ways to protect the
new president’s security or respond if the catastrophe happen. In
your opinion, it was extreme, great, enough or they could improve it?
R.- Sí, había mucha seguridad por todas partes. Había soldados
y vehículos del ejército también… ¡y francotiradores en los
tejados del Lincoln Memorial! Pero fue una cosa buena. Nadie

4. parecía estar preocupado, pienso que todos se sentían a salvo y
felices de estar allí de todas formas. Creo que no nunca podría
haber habido más seguridad por Obama, ¡hicieron un buen
trabajo!
A.- Yes, there was lots of security everywhere, there were soldiers
and army vehicles and snipers on the roofs of the Lincoln Memorial!
But it was a good thing! No one seemed to be bothered, I think
everyone felt save and happy to be there though. I think there can
never be too much security for Obama they did a good job!
P.- Y hablando sobre Obama. La gente especula que él es como
Kennedy (salvando sus diferencias), y que es él quien puede
hacer el sueño de M.L. King realidad. ¿Piensas eso?
Q.- And talking about Obama. People speculate he’s like Kennedy
(saving their differences), and he’s who can make M. L. King’s dream
true. Do you think so?
R.- Obama se parece mucho a Kennedy en la manera en la que él
ha inspirado a toda la gente joven de América otra vez. Eso es
algo muy importante y creo que él ha tenido éxito haciendo eso.
Por supuesto, está además preparando el camino para más
Afroamericanos en el gobierno, y sí, alguna gente es todavía
racista en América pero espero que esto les deje ver que esa
etnia no tiene nada que hacer teniendo un buen líder.
A.- Obama is a lot like Kennedy in the way that he has inspired all
the young people of America again! That is very important and I
think he has succeeded in doing so. Of course he is also paving the
way for more African Americans in the government, and yes, some
people are still racist in America but I hope this lets them see that
race has nothing to do with being a good leader.

5. P.- Toda Europa tiene la impresión de que Obama es el único que
puede arreglar la crisis económica, en la cual nos encontramos
involucrados ahora. Por lo tanto, aquí, a miles de km de él,
nosotros deseamos que el sea nuestra solución y nos traiga la
calma del pasado, o incluso mejorar todo. Pero en EEUU, ¿qué
clase de esperanzas crees que los americanos depositan en
Obama?
Q.- All Europe has the impression that Obama is the only one who
can arrange the economy crisis, in which we find involved now. So,
here, thousands of km far from him, we wish he was our solution and
bring us the calm of the past, or even improve it. But what about
the Unites States, what kind of hopes do you think the American
people place in Obama?
R.- Hay muchas esperanzas basadas en Obama. Esa es la
principal razón por la que le voté. Sé que el resto del mundo
tiene una opinión bastante pobre de América y eso es una
vergüenza, porque aquí vive realmente mucha gente buena. Creo
que Obama puede ayudarnos a cambiar nuestra imagen y
terminar la guerra en Iraq, dar un diferente enfoque a la
economía y en general dar a América el tipo de imagen que
necesita, aquella en a que nos preocupamos de otros países y
queremos ayudar al resto del mundo de una buena manera.
A.- There is a lot of Hope based in Obama. That's the main reason
I voted for him. I know that the rest of the world has a pretty poor
opinion of America and its a shame bc some really great ppl live
here. I think Obama can help change our image and end the war in
Iraq, take a different approach to the economy and overall just give
America the kind of image it needs, that we do care about other
countries and we want to help the rest of the world too in a good
way.

6. P.- Para finalizar, en tu punto de vista, ¿estamos ante el
comienzo de una nueva era: “la era Obama”? ¿Es él quién puede
marcar un antes y un después en la historia de los Estados
Unidos y del mundo entero?
Q.- For finally, in your point of view, are we in the beginning of a
new era: Obama’s era? Is he who can mark an important event in the
Unites States history, and in the history of the entire world?
R.- Ahhh… La era Obama…bueno sí, pienso que todos los
presidentes de América han tenido su propia era y un estilo
sobre ellos. Incluso si no te gusta Bush, él ha tenido su propia
era, de todos modos, e hizo cosas buenas y malas mientras él
estuvo en el poder. Todos nuestros presidentes han tenido un
impacto en América y también en el mundo, solo porque estamos
conectados juntos hoy en día. Obama me recuerda a Lincoln de
muchas maneras. Ambos fueron senadores de Illinois, ambos nos
inspiran y ambos tuvieron que defender los derechos civiles y
cerrar difíciles guerras. Pero esto es sólo mi opinión e ideas.
A.- Ahhh... the Obama era... well yes, I think every President has
had their own era and style about them! Even if you don't like Bush,
he still had his own era and did good and bad things while he was in
office. Everyone of our Presidents I think have had an impact on
America and the world as well, just bc we are all so connected
together nowadays. Obama reminds me of Lincoln in a lot of ways,
They are both senators from Illinois, they both inspire us, and they
both had to stick up for civil rights and go through tough wars. But
that is just my opinion and thoughts
