How My Media Product Compares to Real Magazines
1. In what ways does your media
product use, develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real
media products?
(Question One)
2. How is my Product similar to existing
products on the market?
• I have used typical codes and conventions of a real
music magazines and have followed the same
generic layout.
• I have done this by including all the same features of
a real product.
3. Features I have used include:
(On the cover of my magazine)
• Masthead
• Seal of approval
• Main headline
• Pull quotation from interview
• Cover lines
• Bar code
• Mentions bands and music groups
• Main image, close up
• Direct mode of address

5. Similarities with my magazine and real
magazines on the market
• I have used a direct mode of address as many magazines do.
This attracts the audience and connects the reader with the
artist
• I have used the same colour scheme (red, black and white) as
many music magazines use of this genre (grunge/alternative)
• I have included a seal of approval on the cover of my
magazine which advertises content inside of my magazine
• I have used a close up for the photo of my image as, many do
when only featuring one artist. Sometimes a medium shot or
long shot will be used when showing two artists or a band (as
shown in the example cover of NME Magazine featuring Alex
Turner and Miles Kane
6. Differences with my magazine and real
magazines on the market
• Many magazines will introduce a separate
colour on the cover of the magazine (e.g.
Yellow or blue) in order to highlight one
particular plug
• On the cover of my magazine I included
names of bands and artists in order to clearly
show the genre of my magazine and to
advertise the content inside
7. Features I have used include:
(On the contents page of my magazine)
• Title of the page
• Small version of masthead
• Band index
• Subscription section
• Subheadings
• Multiple images
• Page numbers over images
• Small version of cover page

9. Similarities with my magazine content page
and real magazines on the market
• I have effectively carried the same style and look from the
cover over to the contents page by using the same fonts and
colours
• I have included a small version of the masthead on the
contents page. This is what many magazines do so that the
magazine is easily recognisable and their brand is
recognisable
• I have filled the contents page with multiple images and a lot
of text so that it shows that the magazine has a lot of content
and is worth the money as the majority of my target audience
would be students
10. Differences with my magazine and real
magazines on the market
• Compared to NME Magazine and Q magazine
which I have been looking at I am the only
magazine which titles the page with
‘Contents’. I decided to do this as this would
be the first issue of my magazine and I wanted
to make it clear what each page was
11. On my double page spread:
Features used include:
• Small version of my
masthead
• Text in multiple
columns
• One main image
• Pull quote in bubble
within the text of the
interview
• Artist name used as
heading
• Different coloured text
highlighting key points
• Drop cap used at the
start of the interview
• Black and white image
• Image on the right hand
side of the page

13. Similarities with my magazine double page
spread and real magazines on the market
• I decided that I would put the image on the right hand
side page. This was because I used a picture which
hides the artists face as well as a heading which says
the artists name. By putting the heading on the left and
the image on the right- as we read from left to rightthe reader is able to identify the artist in the interview
• It is typical for the image on the cover to not have a
background. I therefore edited out the background in
my image so that my magazine was more conventional
and similar to a real magazine
14. How my page challenges the typical codes and
conventions
• It is conventional to use and image which uses a direct
mode of address. This connects the artist more with
the reader and they are easily recognisable
• However I decided to use an image which covered the
artists face with a guitar. This portrayed her as being
mysterious- making the reader want to read the article
in order to find out more about the artist
• By also covering the face of the artist with the guitar is
symbolises her passion for music as it shows that she
puts music before everything in her life
