2. Introduction
Located in Hershey, Pennsylvania, the
eponymous Milton Hershey School (MHS) was
founded by the industrialist and his wife Catherine
in 1909 in order to provide a high quality
education to children from low-income families. At
Milton Hershey School, students are encouraged
to volunteer in their communities. MHS student,
10th grader Elijah Conniff, recently was appointed
to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank Junior
Advisory Council.
The student council works to end hunger and
strengthen local communities.
3. Central PA Food Bank
The group consists of selected high school
students, who learn about hunger on both a local
and national level in order to better raise
awareness about the issue. Together, the students
will plan and execute a hunger-related project.
Applicants to the program submit a 350-500 word
essay in response to the question “Hunger in PA -
how can I make a difference?” Those selected
serve a term of one academic year, during which
time they meet once per month. Students who
successfully complete the program receive a $500
scholarship toward their postsecondary education.
