Business Context

This lighting solution was developed by Mindteck for a UK-based utility company.
The system is currently implemented in a UK port city of Southampton and
controls the street lights of the city through a wireless network. Each street light
pole has one “Intelligent Lighting Node” installed. These nodes can measure the
power consumption of the lamp connected to it, and controls the ON/OFF feature
and the brightness level. Nodes are ZigBee enabled and can interact with the other
nodes in the neighbouring poles. Approximately 500 such poles are grouped and
master control for the entire group is done by “Sub-Master Gateway”, a Linux OS-
based board with on-board storage for data logging. With the ambient light sensor
on the gateway, ZigBee can take control of nodes based on the intensity of light.
Gateway also has a 3G interface for communi-cating to the base station
