The agriculture sector continues to be remarkable in its performance mainly due to the fact that the island is within a typhoon-free zone. Production of championed crops such as banana and pineapple had substantial growth rates during the year. Staple food such as rice and corn have registered growth rates due to end of the drought induced by the El Nino phenomenon. The investment commitment worth PHP 2.4 billion to grow Cavendish bananas in Davao del Sur will further propel the performance of the agriculture sector.

Why are we saying that?..... Look at nature of investments – are they big or small investments? Small or medium…
Local investments almost doubled in value from PHP 6.124 billion in 2007 to PHP 12.004 billion in 2008 or 96%. The said investment figure is also the highest in value from 1994 to present. It already surpassed the PHP 9.5 billion mark set in 1998 which has been the highest local investment equity for 9 years. (See Figure 3). Foreign investments have declined by 7% from PHP 1.833 billion in 2007 to PHP 1.704 in 2008. Vs. 85% in local equity…Increase from 77% ot 88%...local
The small and medium are fuelling the growth of Mindanao island…
Distribution by sector --- combined skills of skilled and unskilled
Employment rate is generally increasing in agriculture and services sector;Industry has not been growing unlike services and agriculture..
Unemployment rate slightly decreased in 2008
Even if we add together the 7% for plant/machine operators and the 8% for trades and related workers, still this would only represent less than half of the 32% laborers and unskilled workers. While there are no indication that these are tvet graduates, still this could be an indication of the limited capacity absorption of the industry sector…
hen we refeLack of absorption capacity-“industry”… as a sector vs; but wr to “willingness to hire” refer more to clusters of industry including “big firms” in other sectors;Absorption is more overseas than local;
Note: Philippines..Big corporations provide their own in-house training for their own workers…Up to 75% are potential trainees and trained in their own farms….25% most likely can be in big agri-business firms…
