• Professor Francis A. Thomas Barberán is a PhD researcher and professor at the
Department of Food Science and Technology CEBAS-CSIC in Murcia, Spain.
Oviedo, Spain - November 23, 2012. -- Dr. Francisco A. Barberán Thomas, researcher
and professor in the Department of Food Science and Technology CEBAS-CSIC
(Centre for Soil Science and Applied Biology) one of the leading centers from the CSIC
in the field of Agrifood at their campus site in Murcia. Professor Thomas Barberán-who
leads the Research Group on Quality, Safety and Bioactivity of Plant Foods- has been
named winner of the XXII DuPont Science Award whose theme this year is refocusing
on the subject of nutrition and health.
After a detailed discussion about the merits of the candidates, the 2012 DuPont Award
jury unanimously decided to grant this prize to Dr. Francisco A. Thomas Barberán for
his scientific contributions in the field of quality food production and its role in improving
human health, becoming a national and international reference in the field of food
polyphenols, their relationship with quality and safety, and their role in nutrition and
health.
The President of the jury, Professor Santiago Grisolia, highlighted the significance of
Francisco Tomás Barberán’s work and said that "in the times we live in, it’s encouraging
to see how science is still there, providing solutions and answers and revealing new
questions and possibilities. Those who devote their lives to research hold an important
place in society thanks to these kind of awards.”

The jury, chaired by Professor Santiago Grisolia, met today to award the prize to the
new DuPont Science Award winner. The ceremony to hand the prize -worth 30,000
euros- will be held as usual in the city of Oviedo in early 2013.
The DuPont Award was created in 1991 under the auspices of Nobel Prize winner
Professor Severo Ochoa in order to stimulate initiatives in the form of articles or papers
published that constitute an important contribution to the advancement of science and

2. its applications. Throughout the twenty one previous editions, the award has recognized
leading scientists from the Iberian Peninsula, like: José Joaquín Barluenga, (1991),
