1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.0.1 Definition of counseling
According to the British Association for Counselling (BAC), now the
BACP may have been the first professional association to adopt a
definition of professional counselling. In 1986 it published the following
definition; Counselling is the skilled and principled use of relationship to
facilitate self- knowledge, emotional acceptance and growth and the
optimal development of personal resources. The overall aim is to provide
an opportunity to work towards living more satisfyingly and resourcefully.
Counselling relationships will vary according to need but may be
concerned with developmental issues, addressing and resolving
specific problems, making decisions, coping with crisis, developing
personal insights and knowledge, working through feelings of inner
conflict or improving relationships with others.
In addition according to Blocer (shertzer & stone, 1974), counselling is
the process of interactions that are very meaningful, for themselves and
the environment and contribute to the establishment and/ or clarification
of goals and for future behaviour.
Burks and Stefflre (George & Cristiani 1990), definrs it; counselling
represent a professional relationship between a trained counsellor with a
client. These relationship are sometimes involving more than two
individuals. Its aims to help client understand and explain their views on
living life and learn to achieve goals they set yourself and through
meaningful elections, and through problem solving in the form emotional
2
or between individuals.
Krumboltz ( George & cristiani,1990),has said that counselling
unethical activities performed by the counselor in order to help client
engage in the type of behaviour that will produce solutions to client
problem.
It means, counselling is the processes of professional assistance
aimed at helping individuals understand themselves and the world around
him. It is also systematic process of helping relationship based on
psychological principle. It is run by professional counsellors to assist
clients` personal development and adaption a good enough and through.
The meeting is voluntary and lifelong learning based on Counseling
Ethics.
Counseling does not meean that advice, despite the advice given.
Even counsellor not given direct answers to all the questions to the client,
because what good is not necessarily good for the counselor as well as
for the client. The specialty of counselling is, guides her client find
sources that contributed to the issue before us. Self acceptance and
acknowledgement of source is important in production of self –
transformation.
It is because is not a advice, relationship counselling is a form of two
–way. Counsellor tries to understand by listening and giving good service
and interaction, while the client describe their problems and try to
understand and take action to manage their own problem. The process of
action and reaction between the client and the counsellor also helps
3
client identify themselves and their problems.
Counseling moved the clients to understand themselves in term of
vulnerability that produces problems in life and how the client is exposed
to the problem. Thus the focus of achieving the goals they set themselves
through meaningful elections, and through problem solving in the form of
emotional or between individuals.
