Welcome to the Isaac Dickson Elementary School Media Center Mrs. Hayes, Media Coordinator
Check-in Your Books Come to the check-in desk. 1.  Scan your book’s barcode.  You do not need your library card.
Check-in Your Books (continued) 2. Use the mouse to click on “reset”. 3.  Look at the white spine label of your book.  Check to see what is on the top line of the label.
Check-in Your Books (continued) 4.  Place your book on the return cart on the correct shelf, using the labels on the shelf as your guide. TOP ROW—E, PB E, POP, Graphic Novels MIDDLE ROW--F, PB F, AR, ER, NC, MAG, REF, PRO BOTTOM ROW—Non-fiction 000-900
Find a Book 1.  Find a stick to help mark your book’s place on the shelf. 2.  Place the stick on the shelf next the book you want to preview.
Find a Book (continued) 3. Preview the book. 4.  If you do not want the book, place it back on the shelf by your stick.  Remove the stick.  Go look for another book in the same way.
Ready for Check-out When you find the book you want, place the stick back in a bucket. Find the basket of library cards with your teacher’s name.  Find your card.
Check-out Your Books at the Computer Come to the check-out desk. Follow the step in this order.
Check-out Your Books at the Computer (continued) Push the button on the scanner to turn on the red light. 1.  Scan your card.  Listen for the “OK” sound with two tones.

E = Everybody Picture Books These books are shelved by the author’s last name.
F = Fiction Chapter Books These books are shelved by the author’s last name. F = Fiction Hardbacks PB F = Paperback Fiction
000-999 = Non-Fiction These books are shelved by subject using the Dewey Decimal System.  The call number on the spine will be between 000-999.
Graphic Novels—red “talking bubble” sticker. Big Books—BB
Early Readers = ER Early Readers are found in the cube shelves in the center of the media center.
Accelerated Reader = AR North Carolina = NC English Spanish Language = ESL
Atlases = REF Seasonal Books or New Books
Reference books = REF Reference books are for use in the Media Center only.  They cannot be checked out by students.
Magazines = MAG The newest issue cannot be checked out.  Older issues can be checked out using a plastic holder with a matching magazine name and barcode. Newspapers are for use in the Media Center only.
