Candidates Look For Positions with Exactly the Opposite Approach
4. The Key
Work your available resources to be introduced to the
employer. Employers have found that employee referrals
perform better and stay longer…plus this the is the cheapest
way to hire talent.
5. Hidden Job Market
Why do companies NOT advertise jobs?
Is there such thing as a truly “hidden” job market?
Companies have changed their hiring practices and have
found success. They don’t advertise all jobs everywhere
as this produces a large volume of the “wrong” jobs
6. Helpful Resources
Indeed.com
Google (#1 source job candidates use to find job
opportunities now)
Google alerts
LinkedIn
Business Journal
Targeted employer lists
7. Networking
Networking is NOT:
Cheese-y Salesmanship
Being someone you are not
Networking IS:
Mutually beneficial relationship
Understanding/ explaining your value proposition to an
employer
Clear, defined requests
Expected…world has changed and networking for employment
is part of the picture
8. Employment Brand
Who are you to an employer?
What is your value proposition?
Why would they hire you over another person, 10 others,
100 others?
Basics:
Present well, be polished and prepared in all of your
interactions with employers
Make sure to take feedback constructively (Career Centers
are awesome resource- listen)
9. Working with HR/ Recruiters
Most larger companies have HR to handle recruiting
related processes
Have to apply online…why?
Phone interviews…how do you stand out?
Preparing for the in person interview?
Closing the deal!
10. Tailoring Your Resume & Cover
Letters
Bring focus to your job search…prepare an individual
resume for each application. Focus on quality
applying – not volume
Tailor the cover letter to employers specific posting.
Keep it short and to the point…I love bullet points
Use Job description/ job posting as your guide
Use a reverse chronlogical resume in almost all
instances (I don’t like T-format resumes!)
11. Random Topics
Applicant Tracking Systems
The Black Hole
Why did I not get a call back?
How do I increase my response to submittal rates to
employers?
When should I follow up by phone call?
When should I send a follow up letter after an
interview (hand written?)?
12. Creative Job Search Strategies
Google/ research the people you are going to
meet…look for connection points, but don’t be
obvious about it in conversation
If public company, read their 10-k investor
prospective…will tell you a lot about the employers
near and long term future
Think about a concise, thoughtful response to “Tell
me About yourself.”
13. Smart Interview Questions
Why did you join the company?
How is the company looking to move past it’s nearest
competitor?
Describe the culture and how reflective it is across all levels of
the organization.
Is the company looking to grow into other markets or focus on
it’s core?
What does success look like in the role 90 days and one year
from now?
“Is there anything you’ve heard in our conversation today that
would prevent you from moving me forward in the interview
process?”
14. Thoughts on Career Transition
Many job seekers find they need to change industries
while also transitioning jobs
Keys: employee referrals get a much longer look
Hard to tell your story on paper if you don’t have
industry specific experience
Beef up on the industry you want to work into…don’t
assume the recruiter on the other end understands
your industry. You don’t understand theirs…
