Parts of Speech Review #1 Nouns, Verbs, Adverbs, and Adjectives
Nouns Nouns are words that name people, places, or things. 	Ex:  students, classroom, computer  Write down three nouns that you can find in this room Class Ex:   blackboard, table, ladies
Verbs Verbs are words that express an action* Ex: talk, walk, teach, listen What are three more action words that describe what we do or could do in the classroom? Class Ex:  study, walk, read, say, listen, understand, write, acknowledge, feel, breathe *Some verbs express “states of being” rather than actions:  am, was, appears, seems, etc.
Basic Sentences A simple sentence has a noun part (subject) and a verb part (predicate). Ex:  The teachertalks. Write a simple sentence right now. Ex: She arrived late. He is happy. The student studied. I am studying English.
More Interesting Sentences We can add some words to our basic sentence to tell more about the teacher and how he/she talks. 	Ex:  The crazy teacher talks loudly.
Adjectives Adjectives give more (or “add”) information about nouns. 	Ex:  The crazy teacher talks loudly. 			(adjective)			  What are some other adjectives that we could use instead of crazy? Class Ex: Beautiful, wonderful, fabulous, happy, intelligent, aggressive, lazy, tired, enthusiastic.
Adverbs Adverbs give (“add”) more information about  verbs. 	Ex:  The crazy teacher talks loudly. 			    			        (adverb) What other adverbs could we use instead of loudly? Class Ex:  carefully, properly, quickly, clearly, calmly, silently, strongly, slowly, worringly, seriously, roughly, angrily, impatiently.
Add some adjectives and adverbs to the sentence you wrote earlier. Adverbs (Cont’d.)
Student Sentences The happy teacher talks enthusiastically. He has recently published amazing artwork. The playful girl is jogging home happily. She strongly recommended us to visit the fabulous illuminating event. He liked to study a strange book quickly. I’m studying advanced English patiently. I am deeply affected by the serious novel, “The Unbearable Lightness of Being.”

Introduction to Writing (Cont’d.) Come to the front to get a temporary text Turn to p. 8 and 9 of the text
Activity 2 (p.9) Complete the statements.   An important difference between writing and talking is that in writing we absolutely must ____________ any statement we make. A _______________ is made up of a point (topic sentence) and a collection of specifics (reasons and details) that support the point.
Activity:  Paragraph on the best or worst ______________. Review my feedback on your outline and follow my instructions to continue your work on the topic.  Write the paragraph. (You have approximately 1 hour.)   Hand in all your in-class writing, stapled in the following order:  freewriting (1  mark) outlining (1 mark) paragraph (8 marks) This assignment will be evaluated according to the criteria set out on p. 10 of your text book.

  • 3. Parts of Speech Review #1 Nouns, Verbs, Adverbs, and Adjectives
  • 4. Nouns Nouns are words that name people, places, or things. Ex: students, classroom, computer Write down three nouns that you can find in this room Class Ex: blackboard, table, ladies
  • 5. Verbs Verbs are words that express an action* Ex: talk, walk, teach, listen What are three more action words that describe what we do or could do in the classroom? Class Ex: study, walk, read, say, listen, understand, write, acknowledge, feel, breathe *Some verbs express “states of being” rather than actions: am, was, appears, seems, etc.
  • 6. Basic Sentences A simple sentence has a noun part (subject) and a verb part (predicate). Ex: The teachertalks. Write a simple sentence right now. Ex: She arrived late. He is happy. The student studied. I am studying English.
  • 7. More Interesting Sentences We can add some words to our basic sentence to tell more about the teacher and how he/she talks. Ex: The crazy teacher talks loudly.
  • 8. Adjectives Adjectives give more (or “add”) information about nouns. Ex: The crazy teacher talks loudly. (adjective) What are some other adjectives that we could use instead of crazy? Class Ex: Beautiful, wonderful, fabulous, happy, intelligent, aggressive, lazy, tired, enthusiastic.
  • 9. Adverbs Adverbs give (“add”) more information about verbs. Ex: The crazy teacher talks loudly. (adverb) What other adverbs could we use instead of loudly? Class Ex: carefully, properly, quickly, clearly, calmly, silently, strongly, slowly, worringly, seriously, roughly, angrily, impatiently.

  • 11. Student Sentences The happy teacher talks enthusiastically. He has recently published amazing artwork. The playful girl is jogging home happily. She strongly recommended us to visit the fabulous illuminating event. He liked to study a strange book quickly. I’m studying advanced English patiently. I am deeply affected by the serious novel, “The Unbearable Lightness of Being.”
