Proposal Summary (250 words or less): What issue/barrier does your project address? What is your
proposed solution? How will you implement your project? What steps will you take to reach your goal?

The issue our group from Miami Dade College InterAmerican Campus has decided to address is that of the gradation and
completion rate of undocumented students within the Miami-Dade County area. Our Proposed Solution is to target and educate
teens from the grades 9-12th on the options available to them; such as scholarships and institutions that accept students
regardless of their legal status. Our project focuses on young teens because twenty-five percent of the students whom withdraw
from our college do so because they are academically under prepared. We want to articulate to adolescent undocumented
students, and the community that they have options as long as they take their education seriously. The implementation of our
project involves multiple steps such as the incorporation of social media sites, the creation of a website and distribution of
informative Podcasts/YouTube videos via an Emailing system. We will be enlisting the help of Organizations specializing in this
line of work such as S.W.E.R. (Students Working for Equal Rights); F.L.I.C. (Florida Immigration Coalition) along with other
community groups such as the Miami Dream Defenders and the Student Government Association at Miami Dade College
InterAmerican Campus. We will be attending local High school assemblies and hold classroom workshops to help advocate our
message and encourage young students of all legal statuses to become more civically involved in their communities.

Target Audience: What part of the student population will be impacted by your work? How?

The undocumented student and economically underprivileged sector of the student population will be the ones most profoundly
affected by our work. Through the facilitation and sorting of scholarships students will know what scholarships they qualify for
based on legal status, Grade-point average, community service, and financial need; all of which will be available on the website
we will create. We will also incorporate "Know your rights" workshops, webinars, and personal stories of other undocumented
students to help empower and inform students of the rights, they and their parents possess within the United States. The "Know
your Rights" workshops will be introduced because our data shows that fifty-two percent of the students who leave our campus
is due to them working full-time. Therefore, we understand the correlation that exists between the young students whose
parents have been deported, and prioritization they put in joining the workforce to make "ends meet" rather than attending
school full-time.

Marketing: How will you spread the word and build support for your project? (Please answer to the best of
your ability) What communications tools will you use to market your project?

We will build support for our project by utilizing all channels of communication available to us. Primarily, our marketing will
consist of "word of mouth" campaigning and campus wide emails. We will coordinate with all the Student Government
Association chapters throughout the campuses within Miami Dade College to help increase awareness of our venture. Then we
will delegate with the organization S.W.E.R. and use their chapters within other institutions, and if the need presents itself; we
will utilize F.L.I.C.'s connection with local news stations such as "Univision" and "Telemundo" to help get the word to our
communities. Additionally, we will be wearing shirts with our website address printed along the backside along with our contact
information. And will hand out brochures and phosphorus glow in the dark bracelets also articulating the same information.

Budget: Please describe the costs associated with your project. For existing projects please be prepared to
provide an estimate of expenses during the summit. (Please answer to the best of your ability) Include
additional opportunities for funding and support.

The full cost of our project sums out to be $3100.00 dollars. This includes an estimate of our website valued at $1,405. Six
hundred wristbands valued at $480, $500.00 for twenty five shirts for the individuals who will be presenting at the high schools,
$300.00 Dollars for printing expenses, and $415.00 as seed money for fund raisers that will help support our project and cover
other miscellaneous expenses that should arise.

Goal: What is the overall goal that you would like to achieve with your project? For example: "My project
will help increase completion rates of single parent students"

There are three indicators that will indicate the success of our project. First, the actual increases of awareness of the rights
undocumented students possess along with institutions and scholarships available to them; difference in DATA will be analyzed
by a beginning-year and end-year survey. Secondly, a tangible increase of attendance/completion rate of undocumented
students within Miami-Dade County area. And finally, the increase of community service and involvement by targeted students.

Proposal Summary (250 words or less): What issue/barrier does your project address? What is your
proposed solution? How will you implement your project? What steps will you take to reach your goal?
The Problem :
One of the problems that I have detected at Broward College South campus is the fact that not enough students are getting
involved with student organizations at Broward College. I believe that this is due to a lack of awareness and the struggles of
balancing a social and academic life while in College.

The solution :
I propose to create a student ran, organized and managed editorial magazine called “My College Guide”. This magazine will help
first time college students excel through “the college experience”. Ultimately, the “My College Guide” magazine can increase
completions rate by providing students with knowledge of all: student organizations on campus, upcoming academic calendar,
campus maps, student resources, scholarship opportunities, local businesses, and recreational activities that will help students
stay focus on their college careers. This magazine will also provide several community service and service learning
opportunities.

Target Audience: What part of the student population will be impacted by your work? How?

Who will benefit?
The target audience for this “My College Guide” will be incoming freshman and current Broward college students. Also, all of the
students that are responsible for creating the guide will obtain valuable experience. The “My College Guide” project has a lot of
student and facility support. Any funds that we are granted will be greatly appreciated and will be very useful in aiding to pay for
the expenses of printing the “My College guide”.

Marketing: How will you spread the word and build support for your project? (Please answer to the best of
your ability) What communications tools will you use to market your project?

How will we market this idea?
We will market the “My College Guide” through the college phone application that has already been created by students. Also,
we will use online marketing strategies that incorporate using QR codes and social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and
others. Another source of marketing for the “My College Guide” is for it to be given to all of the new students that come into the
college. This can be incorporated at the beginning of every freshman’s college experience.

Budget: Please describe the costs associated with your project. For existing projects please be prepared to
provide an estimate of expenses during the summit. (Please answer to the best of your ability) Include
additional opportunities for funding and support.

What is the budget?
The price of printing is estimated to be $1,000. With this, we would be able to create 3,000 copies of the “My College Guide”
magazine with 34 pages full of information and beautiful colors.

Goal: What is the overall goal that you would like to achieve with your project? For example: "My project
will help increase completion rates of single parent students"

How can this project benefit and impact the completion rate of student attending community colleges?
The “My College magazine” will not only give the students a chance to finish what they start. It will also challenge students
to create semester goals such as:

    • Increasing My Network - by meeting at least 10 new people that can help students excel in the classroom and post-
        graduation.
    • Joining a student organization- that can help students focus on their career goals and meet new people that can
        help in life after graduation.
    • Finding new hobbies- that can help students navigate away from negative influences that may prove the be
        detrimental to my college career.
    • Doing at least 10 hours. of community service- by doing this students in Broward College will learn how to
become law abiding citizen and also learn how to provide and promote great deeds in the communities they may live in.
    • Applying for scholarships- that can help me fund Students College related expenses.
    • Attending Broward college-sporting event- doing this will help promote other students to engage in student
        activities such as college sports.
    • Trying 5 new local restaurants in the area of Broward College- doing this will help local business around
Broward College that may be struggling

Proposal Summary (250 words or less): What issue/barrier does your project address? What is your
proposed solution? How will you implement your project? What steps will you take to reach your goal?

We believe insubstantial academic preparation and inadequate advising, a lack of network support, and/or financial difficulties
which cause a student to seek employment which may interfere with their collegiate progress and achievement are major
factors preventing students from achieving their scholastic potential. In an effort to solve those aforementioned problems- we
propose that a new center and program be created for students who need additional support from the college. Much like MDC's
ACCESS center which provides, arranges, and coordinates accommodations for students with disabilities- we recommend that a
similar program be created but for struggling students who need additional individual and specialized assistance with tutoring,
advisement, and moral support. The center can also be a colloquial gathering point.

Target Audience: What part of the student population will be impacted by your work? How?

Modeled after the ACCESS Center and Single Stop, our group proposes to aid an array of pupils, of the same diversity composing
out college. Our group targets a general audience because we've identified everyone, and not just one specific group faces
challenges, obstacles, and debacles for college completion. We especially plan to target students discerned as "at risk for
failure" who lack proper support and guidance.

Marketing: How will you spread the word and build support for your project? (Please answer to the best of
your ability) What communications tools will you use to market your project?

There's a plethora of ways to market our program. Conventional ways to market our programs includes posting flyers, promoting
in large events (such as club rush, etc), contacting through popular social media (e.g Facebook, Twitter, etc.), and

sending/forwarding emails via college faculty and student body. We also plan to further expand our audience group by creating
videos to reel in students, promoting the program and demonstrating video through MDCTV, as wells as creating a website/blog
to post updates and reach a very broad population, and also reach people in an intimate level by personally promoting,
speaking, and initiating giveaways to motivate students.

Budget: Please describe the costs associated with your project. For existing projects please be prepared to
provide an estimate of expenses during the summit. (Please answer to the best of your ability) Include
additional opportunities for funding and support.

Rooms that are not being utilized can serve the space for the said center. Furnishings could be provided by the school. The
majority of our budget will be spent of the hiring of additional advisers and students which will work at the college.

Goal: What is the overall goal that you would like to achieve with your project? For example: "My project
will help increase completion rates of single parent students"

The proposed project will allow for students to receive adequate academic preparation through the establishment of a center
where students will be able to receive support from advisers in the case that there is a lack of network support (family and
friends as well as help in regards to financial difficulties that may interfere with their collegiate progression.

Proposal Summary (250 words or less): What issue/barrier does your project address? What is your
proposed solution? How will you implement your project? What steps will you take to reach your goal?

After reviewing Miami Dade College's (MDC) institutional research on negative retention and success rates throughout the
student population, as well as the Strategic Progress Plan which states MDC's commitment to effectuating solutions for this
predicament, we propose the implementation of a four-course success sequence. This sequence would be aimed to improve
success rates by adopting some of the Student Life Skills (SLS) courses at MDC and modifying them to be more sequential and
comprehensive. It would in essence model after The Honors College Interdisciplinary Honors course structure with the added
component that the professors for those courses would act as personal advisors for their students.  The sequence would
spread across four semesters: S1: Study Skills, Time Management, and Familiarization of the college S2: Major Concentration
Students interested in transferring to a four year institution: S3: College Applications S4: Transition Preparation Students
obtaining a Bachelors degree at MDC or going straight into the workforce: S3: Social and work protocol S4: Job placement,
interview skills, resume creation skills (Each of these courses would be a requirement every 15 credits completed towards an
Associate degree. For students in Bachelors programs, the first pair of courses would be required during their first 30 credits
and second pair during their final 30 credits) Implementation would take large amounts of time and resources which are out of
our control. However, we would like to test our proposal on a focus group of 100 students by condensing the courses into four
workshops which students would attend throughout an academic year. This would provide us with evidence that our success
sequence works and increase our credibility to the college.

Target Audience: What part of the student population will be impacted by your work? How?

Our proposed focus group would consist of 100 MDC students which are as diverse as possible in regards to majors, campuses,
and gender. However, the long term goal of our proposal is to impact all MDC students.

Marketing: How will you spread the word and build support for your project? (Please answer to the best of
your ability) What communications tools will you use to market your project?

We will find volunteers for our focus group from e-mails sent to students through the Student Life departments as well as the

Institute for Civic Engagement and Democracy. We will also seek referrals for students from the Student Services office and
professors who teach the college's SLS courses. Simultaneously with our efforts to work with the focus group, we will inform the
college of our proposal by presenting it to members of the college's MDC3 committee as well as at retreats for SLS professors.

Budget: Please describe the costs associated with your project. For existing projects please be prepared to
provide an estimate of expenses during the summit. (Please answer to the best of your ability) Include
additional opportunities for funding and support.

The costs that will incur during our project are directly related to the incentives provided to participants for them to attend the
four workshops. At a minimum, we would like to provide participants with meals which would range anywhere from $2,000-
$4,000 in total depending on the duration of each workshop (1 meal vs 2). All other funds raised would be used for extra
incentives such as raffle prizes for attending the workshops.

Goal: What is the overall goal that you would like to achieve with your project? For example: "My project
will help increase completion rates of single parent students"

Our goal is to have 90% or more of our workshop participants successfully complete their degrees on time, minimize the number
of excess credits they pay for, and transfer to a four year institution as efficiently as possible. Accomplishing this smaller goal
will provide us with the needed credibility that our success sequence works and should be implemented throughout all of MDC
for all students.

The barriers that prevent Millenials from completing college are pregnancies, lack of good decision making, and unhealthy
habits. We are all a part of the organization known as Strong Women Strong Girls and as a result we will focus primarily on
women. Our solution is a campaign known as Breaking Down The Barriers in which we will work with Miami Dade College women
to address the essential barriers that hinder college completion. Our campaign will begin with a kick off event introducing our
campaign. Throughout the year we will hold Sister Circles that will be our campaign support groups. We will also hold panels
which will discuss the various issues surrounding our campaign, as well as, interactive workshops. To close our campaign, we
will hold a run that will tie together the campaigns mission. The run will also include information booths and conduct health
screenings.

Goal: What is the overall goal that you would like to achieve with your project? For example: "My project
will help increase completion rates of single parent students"

Our project is to help Miami Dade College women break down the barriers in order to acheive college completion. Kick Off This
will be the opening event for "Breaking Down the Barriers," our campaign in Miami Dade College Wolfson campus targeting
college women to make healthy choices and decisions in life that will positively affect the completion of their college education.
This event will be held at the college in the month of September and it will include performances and expositions expressing the
theme of our campaign. The kickoff event will include skits, musical and dance performances and painting expositions
surrounding the campaigns idea. There will be a raffle and several booths that give out information about the message. Sister
Circles The goal of Strong Women, Strong Girls is to empower Miami Dade College women to build confidence and self-esteem.
For our proposal, we will try our best to incorporate the goals of Strong Women, Strong Girls to help women complete their
education and to realize their full potential. One of our motives is to organize a support group system for women in Miami Dade
College known as Sister Circles. The main goals of the Sister Circles is to encourage women to be involved in school activities,
meet new people, and create an environment where women can be comfortable, discuss their issues and receive support from
their peers. Barriers that we believe are preventing women from finishing their education are pregnancies, and unhealthy
decisions. Sister Circles would help women realize that they can overcome these barriers, by directing them to child care
services. In addition, we will work to encourage women to make healthy decisions in their lives including, healthy eating habits
and safe sex. We will also emphasize the importance of education and help women realize that dropping out is not an option.
Sister Circles will take place twice per month from September until April. For the Sister Circle attendees, they will be able to
further connect with each other through hercampus.com, which is an online news, blogging, and magazine website for college
women. Workshops/Panels We will organize two interactive workshops and a series of three panel discussions. The workshops/
panels will address topics such as pregnancy prevention, healthy relationships, women as agents of change, healthy decision
making, and nutrition. There will also be a networking power lunch in conjunction with the women as agents of change panel.
We plan on working with non-profit organizations to both conduct workshops and be members of the panels. Run: As a
culminating event to our year-long empowerment campaign, we will host the "Breaking Down the Barriers Run" The run has two
key messages; the Importance of health and the Importance of completing college. We will invite organizations to have
information booths and also conduct health screenings. Booths will include: safe sex information, blood pressure, cholesterol
levels and nutrition, yoga demonstrations, mentoring and tutoring programs.

Target 2020 florida summit competition award winners

  • 1. 1875 K Street NW, 5th Floor Washington, DC 20006 Office: 202.642.4320 Fax: 202.729.8100 www.Mobilize.org Summit Competition Winners Project Title High School Community Outreach Team Leader Name Aylwing Olivas Name of Community College Miami Dade College College Campus InterAmerican Team Members: Please list your project team members and their email addresses for future summit communication. If you are proposing as an individual, please leave this question blank. Edwin Ramos Jennifer Gonzalez Michelle Sfeir Proposal Summary (250 words or less): What issue/barrier does your project address? What is your proposed solution? How will you implement your project? What steps will you take to reach your goal? The issue our group from Miami Dade College InterAmerican Campus has decided to address is that of the gradation and completion rate of undocumented students within the Miami-Dade County area. Our Proposed Solution is to target and educate teens from the grades 9-12th on the options available to them; such as scholarships and institutions that accept students regardless of their legal status. Our project focuses on young teens because twenty-five percent of the students whom withdraw from our college do so because they are academically under prepared. We want to articulate to adolescent undocumented students, and the community that they have options as long as they take their education seriously. The implementation of our project involves multiple steps such as the incorporation of social media sites, the creation of a website and distribution of informative Podcasts/YouTube videos via an Emailing system. We will be enlisting the help of Organizations specializing in this line of work such as S.W.E.R. (Students Working for Equal Rights); F.L.I.C. (Florida Immigration Coalition) along with other community groups such as the Miami Dream Defenders and the Student Government Association at Miami Dade College InterAmerican Campus. We will be attending local High school assemblies and hold classroom workshops to help advocate our message and encourage young students of all legal statuses to become more civically involved in their communities. Target Audience: What part of the student population will be impacted by your work? How? The undocumented student and economically underprivileged sector of the student population will be the ones most profoundly affected by our work. Through the facilitation and sorting of scholarships students will know what scholarships they qualify for based on legal status, Grade-point average, community service, and financial need; all of which will be available on the website we will create. We will also incorporate "Know your rights" workshops, webinars, and personal stories of other undocumented students to help empower and inform students of the rights, they and their parents possess within the United States. The "Know your Rights" workshops will be introduced because our data shows that fifty-two percent of the students who leave our campus is due to them working full-time. Therefore, we understand the correlation that exists between the young students whose parents have been deported, and prioritization they put in joining the workforce to make "ends meet" rather than attending school full-time. (Please answer to the best of your ability) What communications tools will you use to market your project? We will build support for our project by utilizing all channels of communication available to us. Primarily, our marketing will consist of "word of mouth" campaigning and campus wide emails. We will coordinate with all the Student Government Association chapters throughout the campuses within Miami Dade College to help increase awareness of our venture. Then we will delegate with the organization S.W.E.R. and use their chapters within other institutions, and if the need presents itself; we will utilize F.L.I.C.'s connection with local news stations such as "Univision" and "Telemundo" to help get the word to our communities. Additionally, we will be wearing shirts with our website address printed along the backside along with our contact information. And will hand out brochures and phosphorus glow in the dark bracelets also articulating the same information. Budget: Please describe the costs associated with your project. For existing projects please be prepared to provide an estimate of expenses during the summit. (Please answer to the best of your ability) Include additional opportunities for funding and support. The full cost of our project sums out to be $3100.00 dollars. This includes an estimate of our website valued at $1,405. Six hundred wristbands valued at $480, $500.00 for twenty five shirts for the individuals who will be presenting at the high schools, $300.00 Dollars for printing expenses, and $415.00 as seed money for fund raisers that will help support our project and cover other miscellaneous expenses that should arise. Goal: What is the overall goal that you would like to achieve with your project? For example: "My project will help increase completion rates of single parent students" There are three indicators that will indicate the success of our project. First, the actual increases of awareness of the rights undocumented students possess along with institutions and scholarships available to them; difference in DATA will be analyzed by a beginning-year and end-year survey. Secondly, a tangible increase of attendance/completion rate of undocumented students within Miami-Dade County area. And finally, the increase of community service and involvement by targeted students. A hand book to guide Broward College students to a more active, productive and successful college experience . Team Leader Name Ajah McPherson Name of Community College Broward College College Campus South Team Members: Please list your project team members and their email addresses for future summit communication. If you are proposing as an individual, please leave this question blank. Albert Hourie Crishell Bautista Serge Michel Proposal Summary (250 words or less): What issue/barrier does your project address? What is your proposed solution? How will you implement your project? What steps will you take to reach your goal? The Problem : One of the problems that I have detected at Broward College South campus is the fact that not enough students are getting involved with student organizations at Broward College. I believe that this is due to a lack of awareness and the struggles of balancing a social and academic life while in College. The solution : I propose to create a student ran, organized and managed editorial magazine called “My College Guide”. This magazine will help first time college students excel through “the college experience”. Ultimately, the “My College Guide” magazine can increase completions rate by providing students with knowledge of all: student organizations on campus, upcoming academic calendar, campus maps, student resources, scholarship opportunities, local businesses, and recreational activities that will help students stay focus on their college careers. This magazine will also provide several community service and service learning opportunities. Target Audience: What part of the student population will be impacted by your work? How? Who will benefit? The target audience for this “My College Guide” will be incoming freshman and current Broward college students. Also, all of the students that are responsible for creating the guide will obtain valuable experience. The “My College Guide” project has a lot of student and facility support. Any funds that we are granted will be greatly appreciated and will be very useful in aiding to pay for the expenses of printing the “My College guide”. Marketing: How will you spread the word and build support for your project? (Please answer to the best of your ability) What communications tools will you use to market your project? How will we market this idea? We will market the “My College Guide” through the college phone application that has already been created by students. Also, we will use online marketing strategies that incorporate using QR codes and social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, and others. Another source of marketing for the “My College Guide” is for it to be given to all of the new students that come into the college. This can be incorporated at the beginning of every freshman’s college experience. Mobilize.org empowers and invests in Millennials to create and implement solutions to social problems.

For existing projects please be prepared to provide an estimate of expenses during the summit. (Please answer to the best of your ability) Include additional opportunities for funding and support. What is the budget? The price of printing is estimated to be $1,000. With this, we would be able to create 3,000 copies of the “My College Guide” magazine with 34 pages full of information and beautiful colors. Goal: What is the overall goal that you would like to achieve with your project? For example: "My project will help increase completion rates of single parent students" How can this project benefit and impact the completion rate of student attending community colleges? The “My College magazine” will not only give the students a chance to finish what they start. It will also challenge students to create semester goals such as: • Increasing My Network - by meeting at least 10 new people that can help students excel in the classroom and post- graduation. • Joining a student organization- that can help students focus on their career goals and meet new people that can help in life after graduation. • Finding new hobbies- that can help students navigate away from negative influences that may prove the be detrimental to my college career. • Doing at least 10 hours. of community service- by doing this students in Broward College will learn how to become law abiding citizen and also learn how to provide and promote great deeds in the communities they may live in. • Applying for scholarships- that can help me fund Students College related expenses. • Attending Broward college-sporting event- doing this will help promote other students to engage in student activities such as college sports. • Trying 5 new local restaurants in the area of Broward College- doing this will help local business around Broward College that may be struggling Community/College Partner Information All Summit Competition project proposals must list a community partner at the applicant's community college or at a partnering community organization who will serve as an advisor to the project team. If you are proposing as an individual, please leave this question blank. Jannette Nunez Laiyen Suarez Amalia Mariaca Paula Vieira Frank Pellegrino Stefan Moore Gerard Pean Mac Dineen Proposal Summary (250 words or less): What issue/barrier does your project address? What is your proposed solution? How will you implement your project? What steps will you take to reach your goal? We believe insubstantial academic preparation and inadequate advising, a lack of network support, and/or financial difficulties which cause a student to seek employment which may interfere with their collegiate progress and achievement are major factors preventing students from achieving their scholastic potential. In an effort to solve those aforementioned problems- we propose that a new center and program be created for students who need additional support from the college. Much like MDC's ACCESS center which provides, arranges, and coordinates accommodations for students with disabilities- we recommend that a similar program be created but for struggling students who need additional individual and specialized assistance with tutoring, advisement, and moral support. The center can also be a colloquial gathering point. Target Audience: What part of the student population will be impacted by your work? How? Modeled after the ACCESS Center and Single Stop, our group proposes to aid an array of pupils, of the same diversity composing out college. Our group targets a general audience because we've identified everyone, and not just one specific group faces challenges, obstacles, and debacles for college completion. We especially plan to target students discerned as "at risk for failure" who lack proper support and guidance. Marketing: How will you spread the word and build support for your project? (Please answer to the best of your ability) What communications tools will you use to market your project? There's a plethora of ways to market our program. Conventional ways to market our programs includes posting flyers, promoting in large events (such as club rush, etc), contacting through popular social media (e.g Facebook, Twitter, etc.), and Mobilize.org empowers and invests in Millennials to create and implement solutions to social problems.

We also plan to further expand our audience group by creating videos to reel in students, promoting the program and demonstrating video through MDCTV, as wells as creating a website/blog to post updates and reach a very broad population, and also reach people in an intimate level by personally promoting, speaking, and initiating giveaways to motivate students. Budget: Please describe the costs associated with your project. For existing projects please be prepared to provide an estimate of expenses during the summit. Goal: What is the overall goal that you would like to achieve with your project? If you are proposing as an individual, please leave this question blank. Ari Pena Joanna Matthews-Pace Abril Mariaca Axel Turcios Proposal Summary (250 words or less): What issue/barrier does your project address? What is your proposed solution? How will you implement your project? What steps will you take to reach your goal? After reviewing Miami Dade College's (MDC) institutional research on negative retention and success rates throughout the student population, as well as the Strategic Progress Plan which states MDC's commitment to effectuating solutions for this predicament, we propose the implementation of a four-course success sequence. This sequence would be aimed to improve success rates by adopting some of the Student Life Skills (SLS) courses at MDC and modifying them to be more sequential and comprehensive. It would in essence model after The Honors College Interdisciplinary Honors course structure with the added component that the professors for those courses would act as personal advisors for their students.  The sequence would spread across four semesters: S1: Study Skills, Time Management, and Familiarization of the college S2: Major Concentration Students interested in transferring to a four year institution: S3: College Applications S4: Transition Preparation Students obtaining a Bachelors degree at MDC or going straight into the workforce: S3: Social and work protocol S4: Job placement, interview skills, resume creation skills (Each of these courses would be a requirement every 15 credits completed towards an Associate degree. For students in Bachelors programs, the first pair of courses would be required during their first 30 credits and second pair during their final 30 credits) Implementation would take large amounts of time and resources which are out of our control. However, we would like to test our proposal on a focus group of 100 students by condensing the courses into four workshops which students would attend throughout an academic year. This would provide us with evidence that our success sequence works and increase our credibility to the college. Target Audience: What part of the student population will be impacted by your work? How? Our proposed focus group would consist of 100 MDC students which are as diverse as possible in regards to majors, campuses, and gender. However, the long term goal of our proposal is to impact all MDC students. Marketing: How will you spread the word and build support for your project? (Please answer to the best of your ability) What communications tools will you use to market your project? We will find volunteers for our focus group from e-mails sent to students through the Student Life departments as well as the Mobilize.org empowers and invests in Millennials to create and implement solutions to social problems.

We will also seek referrals for students from the Student Services office and professors who teach the college's SLS courses. Simultaneously with our efforts to work with the focus group, we will inform the college of our proposal by presenting it to members of the college's MDC3 committee as well as at retreats for SLS professors. Budget: Please describe the costs associated with your project. For existing projects please be prepared to provide an estimate of expenses during the summit. (Please answer to the best of your ability) Include additional opportunities for funding and support. The costs that will incur during our project are directly related to the incentives provided to participants for them to attend the four workshops. At a minimum, we would like to provide participants with meals which would range anywhere from $2,000- $4,000 in total depending on the duration of each workshop (1 meal vs 2). All other funds raised would be used for extra incentives such as raffle prizes for attending the workshops. Goal: What is the overall goal that you would like to achieve with your project? For example: "My project will help increase completion rates of single parent students" Our goal is to have 90% or more of our workshop participants successfully complete their degrees on time, minimize the number of excess credits they pay for, and transfer to a four year institution as efficiently as possible. Accomplishing this smaller goal will provide us with the needed credibility that our success sequence works and should be implemented throughout all of MDC for all students. Kick Off This will be the opening event for "Breaking Down the Barriers," our campaign in Miami Dade College Wolfson campus targeting college women to make healthy choices and decisions in life that will positively affect the completion of their college education. This event will be held at the college in the month of September and it will include performances and expositions expressing the theme of our campaign. The kickoff event will include skits, musical and dance performances and painting expositions surrounding the campaigns idea. There will be a raffle and several booths that give out information about the message. Sister Circles The goal of Strong Women, Strong Girls is to empower Miami Dade College women to build confidence and self-esteem. For our proposal, we will try our best to incorporate the goals of Strong Women, Strong Girls to help women complete their education and to realize their full potential. One of our motives is to organize a support group system for women in Miami Dade College known as Sister Circles. The main goals of the Sister Circles is to encourage women to be involved in school activities, meet new people, and create an environment where women can be comfortable, discuss their issues and receive support from their peers. Barriers that we believe are preventing women from finishing their education are pregnancies, and unhealthy decisions. Sister Circles would help women realize that they can overcome these barriers, by directing them to child care services. In addition, we will work to encourage women to make healthy decisions in their lives including, healthy eating habits and safe sex. We will also emphasize the importance of education and help women realize that dropping out is not an option. Sister Circles will take place twice per month from September until April. For the Sister Circle attendees, they will be able to further connect with each other through hercampus.com, which is an online news, blogging, and magazine website for college women. Workshops/Panels We will organize two interactive workshops and a series of three panel discussions. The workshops/ panels will address topics such as pregnancy prevention, healthy relationships, women as agents of change, healthy decision making, and nutrition. There will also be a networking power lunch in conjunction with the women as agents of change panel. We plan on working with non-profit organizations to both conduct workshops and be members of the panels. Run: As a culminating event to our year-long empowerment campaign, we will host the "Breaking Down the Barriers Run" The run has two key messages; the Importance of health and the Importance of completing college. We will invite organizations to have information booths and also conduct health screenings. Booths will include: safe sex information, blood pressure, cholesterol levels and nutrition, yoga demonstrations, mentoring and tutoring programs.
