1. Culture of Reading for Our Future
Assalamualaikum Wr.Wb.
Dear juries ladies and gentlemen. Standing in front of you all, I am mochamad irfanudin
will deliver my speech under the title “Reading Culture for Our Future”
Ladies and gentlemen, what is culture? Culture is something essential or fundamental for
our live. Something overall and complex lifestyle and something that underlie the formation of
civilization. Are Indonesian cultures just limited to the local art? The answer is not. Ladies and
gentlemen, it can be how we speak, the way we dress up, the way we behave, and the way how
we think. And if culture is something essential and something that underlie the formation of
civilization. Why don’t we make our good culture? Such us reading culture. According to
surveys, Indonesian reading culture is still minimal. In 2011, based on a survey of the United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) this low interest in reading, proved by the
index of Indonesian society read only 0,001. Based on data from CSM, the ratio of the number of
books read high school students in 13 countries, including Indonesia. In the United States, the
number of books that must be read over 32 books, Netherlands 30 books, France 30 books, 22
books of Japan, Switzerland 15 books, 13 books Canada, Russia 12 books, Brunei 7 books, 6
books Singapore, Thailand 5 books, and Indonesia 0 books. Its so shame.
Ladies and gentlemen, what is important thing of reading culture? Of course its so really
important.
1. With reading we can know everything.
We know that book is a window to the world. A place of knowledge. Place
everything about information there. If we wants know everything, read the books. More
books we read more knowledge we able.
2. Spend time for positiv activity
Audiences, are you apriciated your time? Yeah, so do not let your precious time
will be wasted. Take adventages of your timen as posible. Reading is the one of them.
Start from now. Make reading as a tool to filling the emptiness of your time. So that,
there would be no wasted your time.
3. Forming our character
With reading we know about the norms, so we know how we behave and how
being good character. we also can imitate the characters through reading biographies.
4. Erasing limit
With reading we become knowledgeable. with extensive knowledge we can know
everything then we remove the limitations.

2. Ladies and gentlemen, reading that I mean here is not read novels, comics or other
fictional story. but the general knowledge books or biographies. because there are important
knowledge the real information. not like fiction books that might just imagining.
Ladies and gentlemen, we know that to make it happen we face so many obstacles. From
human resource or material. From human resource, we still do not realize the importance of
reading. We are more interested in reading novel, comic or another fiction book than reading
general knowledge book. From the material, we still lack of book and libraries. The number of
publications book in Indonesia is very low. Less than 18.000 titles per year. This number is
lower than japan which reached 40.000 titles per year, India 60000/year, china 140000/year
(according to compas data in 2012). it shows a lack of awareness of the importance of books.
SO what is the solution ladies and gentlemen? it’s so simple, begin from ourself, love to
read books, make it a habit to read the book even if only briefly. Self a your time to read a book
in your spare time. the government should conduct programs of the importance of reading. such
as mobile libraries, distribution of free books or hold seminars.
