Grammar: 
Gerund, Infinitive or Both 
By 
Mohsine Mahraj
1. Gerund: verb + “ing” 
• Example: studying / learning. 
2. Full Infinitive: “to” + base form of the verb 
• Example: To study / to learn. 
3. Bare infinitive: infinitive without “to” 
• Example: Study / learn.
Gerund 
• After some verbs: (see 
worksheet) 
• After prepositions: in, on, 
at, under, without, 
to…etc. 
• Ex: I am looking forward 
to hearing from you. 
• After some expressions: 
can’t stand, can’t resist, 
can’t bear 
Full Infinitive 
• After some verbs: (see 
worksheet) 
• After Adjectives: 
• Ex: It’s difficult to 
understand Chinese. 
• Infinitive of purpose 
(why): 
• Ex: I went to the shop 
to buy some milk.
1. After Modals: shall, should, may, might, 
will, would, can, could, must, had 
better…etc. 
Ex: you should revise your lessons. 
2. After some verbs: let, let’s, help 
Ex: let’s go!
• Remember + gerund: have memory of an event. 
• Remember + infinitive: not forget to do something. 
• Stop + gerund: quit an activity 
• Stop + infinitive: interrupt an activity to begin 
another one. 
• Try + gerund: to test something 
• Try + infinitive: attempt to do something.
