Week 3 Questions and Answer for each topic. Topic 1 Men and women communicate on a daily basis but it is not always effective. Remember the 1995 book Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus? The author argues men and women have different needs, goals, values, and communication styles. Do you agree with this statement or not and why? Topic 2 Electronic media is changing our lives and technology is to blame. We no longer talk face to face; we text and text and text. What has changed over the last decade that makes us feel like we need to have instant connections? When you send a text to someone and they do not reply, is that offensive? Topic 3 Proofreading is a critical part of the written communication process yet it is often the most overlooked step. What tips do you have for someone that is new to the business environment when it comes to ensuring they produce quality documents. Read replies and comment on them (for each topic 4 people replies): Topic 1 #1 I both agree and disagree with the authors argument: Men and women have different needs, goals, values and communication styles. While there are obvious differences between the genders, such as testosterone balances- I feel that this statement looks over the big picture, we are all different as individuals, not necessarily as generalized groups (pink and blue). Before I get into my firm opinion on this topic, I would like to address that while this may not be true to the date, back in the day I believe that this would be more of an accurate statement. Men were born into families to earn the money and women were born and married into families to take care of the home and family- so back then, yes, I would agree that they had different goals, values and communication styles. However, these days there is far more equity in gender roles than the old timers could have ever imagined, now there are stay at home dads and traveling business moms, a new norm. There are plenty of men who share the same charisma as women, and vice versa. I would like to respectfully point out gender changes, as I feel it is appropriate for this topic: a great example of a man or woman whom shared the same goals, values, needs, etc. to the point of conversion. We are all different and with that being said, being comfortable in our own skin, which requires meeting our own needs, has nothing to do with our gender... in my opinion. #2 I am conflicted about this topic. I do believe that in general, men and women communicate differently and have different communication styles. I do not believe this is black and white though. I tend to think that men and women have way more commonalities in communication styles than they have differences. I find that many women are really into "gossip" and or just being very chatty in general, whereas men tend to be more reserved and quiet. Of course this doesn't pertain to every man and woman. For example, most of the women in my family will talk to each other on the phone almost once a ...

Evaluating and Strategizing Your Own Interpersonal Communication Competence Learning Objectives In this chapter, readers will consider various ways to engage in interpersonal interactions in a more competent way. By the conclusion of this chapter, readers will be able to • Assess and evaluate interpersonal communication success • Create and manage expectations for interacting in various communication contexts • Understand how to successfully face and overcome challenges in multiple communication situations • Apply methods for the formation, evaluation, and reassessment of goals and plans for improving interpersonal communication competence 11 Creatas Images/Creatas/Thinkstock Introduction Chapter 11 Introduction Think back to the interaction between Kim and Pat that we presented in Chapter 1. In that sce- nario, Kim and Pat used different channels (including e-mail, mobile phones, and face-to-face) to engage in a conflict with each other about what they were going to have for dinner that night. Their interaction ended rather abruptly, with Pat saying that Kim’s making a big deal about noth- ing and asking Kim to help figure out what to do about dinner. Think now about how their inter- action might have progressed from that point. There are a number of different ways that Kim and Pat could have ended their conversation. Instead of Kim saying, “Oh, I’m making a big deal out of nothing?” she could have suggested that they just agree on what to eat for dinner. For example, Kim might have said, “Well, let’s get pizza. We’re both hungry.” With Pat replying, “Fine. I’ll order it, and we can talk about something else.” This closing of the conversation does not fully resolve the issue but does at least allow both individuals to have their say and conclude their interaction fairly amicably. But let’s also consider two other possible scenarios. In the first, the conflict escalates, with Kim screaming, “That’s because you NEVER listen to me! You are so selfish!” and Pat responding, “Well, all you do is blather constantly about nonsense, so it is impossible to remember everything you say.” Then, both Kim and Pat leave—Kim goes into the den to play video games, and Pat puts on his sneakers and goes for a run. The situation remains unresolved, and the outcome is not satisfying for either of them. Finally, Kim and Pat could take the time and make an effort to truly listen to and understand each other. Kim could say, “I guess I had not made that clear about being home early enough to have dinner together. Sorry about that.” Pat replies, “OK. I will make a mental note to pay more atten- tion. I’m sorry too.” Here, Kim and Pat both feel that the situation has been largely resolved, and they are satisfied with the outcome. Which of these three outcomes is the most competent? Why? Even though we know when we read these different interactions that the third outcome—listening and understanding—is most preferred and the most ...

Topic.docx 1 SPEECH DRAFT 2 lesson 3 topic I have interest in communication and its importance in the society including formal and informal interactions. Consequently, my research topics include phone communication, written communication, the importance of words in communication and communication in a dating relationship. I will take communication in a dating relationship because my audience includes people in the age of dating. I will focus on the important components of communication when dating including timeliness, media, and tone. The general purpose of the speech is to inform fellow youths on communication strategies that will make dating effective. I will specifically focus on the choice of time when one should communicate with his/her date during the day. Consequently, my thesis statement will be, ‘timeliness of communication during dating’. lesson 4 topic Timely communication in Romantic Relationships Have you been in a number of relationships that failed? Think of all those ladies or men that you have frustrated in your life by promising them a great future together, only for you to fall out with them due to your own failure. This is frustrating especially when you consider yourself a social glue like myself who people want to identify with and have a bunch of friends. Openness and honesty, expressed in communication, is a part of a healthy relationship. ‘communication is the key.’ However, I can tell from self-experience that this is one of those great theories whose uses irrelevant without context or application in a real world. What aspect of communication is key; is it language, time, honesty, being funny or which area. While I have figured that I have the best communication skills around my peers, I have been in multiple failed relationships whose failure was due to my bad. That’s how I realized that timely communication is key to the success of a relationship. Timely communication means ensuring that communication does not just happen in an offhand manner. Instead, one should find some time to when the partner is calm undistracted, relaxed and not in a rush to talk to them. Timely communication also means discussing an issue within agreeable time limits. Although one does not have to talk about an issue right away, they should consider bringing it up within 2 days. Timeliness in communication also includes having a regular time when one bond with their partner. It is necessary to take at least 30 minutes a day to hang out and talk with the partner.
