3. Cochlear Implants and Mainstreaming –
• Research has suggested that the majority of children receiving cochlear implants at
young ages (66%), have the potential to enter the mainstream after 3-4 years of implant
use
• This means that many children with cochlear implants will begin their education in
regular preschool programs*

4. Goals of Mainstreaming –
• Academic development on par with hearing peers
• Social development on par with hearing peers
• Exposure to a regular education environment
• Attendance at neighbourhood school
5. What does mainstreaming look like?
• Academic Mainstreaming
–Full time
–Part time
• Social mainstreaming
• Supported
–With full time sign interpreter
–With oral interpreter or aide
–With itinerant service consultation support
6. Child Readiness –
• Depending on age of child children entering mainstream should have age appropriate or near age
appropriate abilities in:
–language skills’
–speech intelligibly
–academic concept development
–conversational abilities
–maturity/social skills
7. Parent Readiness –
• Parents who seek mainstream placement for their child should:
–View mainstream placement as a beginning rather than the end
–Ensure the Individual Education Program (IEP_ is well written and supports their child’s
learning
–Be prepared to act as advocate, especially for a young child
8. Parents are partners –
Parents are a child’s primary care takers. They are
the only member of the team who have a complete
perspective on their child’s development.
9. Best hearing starts at home –
• There are a number of things you can do at home to ensure your child can
maximise their listening.
• Develop an Experience Book around starting school
–Take pictures of the school building, front door & classroom,
bag locker, lunch place
–Take pictures of daily school routines such as story time, floor
time, recess
–Take a picture of child being dropped off and picked up from
school
10. Increase language level –
• Ask advance questions (How? and Why?)
• Involve him in problem solving activities
• Ask him to re-tell a story
• Involve family members in conversation with him
11. Develop self advocacy
Teach your child to:
• Make sure he can hear
• Raise his hand in the class
• Know his sound processor and accessories
• Can manage his device such as changing batteries,
changing programs for different environments
12. Develop social skills –
Teach your child to:
• Ask for clarifications
• Request the speaker slow down, repeat part or all of sentence
• Be independent

• Evaluation of child’s performance on a number of parameters will be helpful:
–Knowledge of routines and transitions
–Ability to follow directions
–Comprehension of classroom instruction
–Observation of child’s responses when faced with iinstructions or conversational breakdown
–Interactions with peers
18. Position your child for success –
• Acoustics: Soft materials (e.g. curtains, rugs, corkboards, material on walls) in
a room reduce the amount of sounds that bounce off hard surfaces which can
result in less distracting background noise for your child
19. Position your child for success -
• Seating: Aim is to position your child so that they are best able to hear and see information from
the teacher and classmates
• Environment: Position child away from sources of noise (e.g. fans, doors, windows)
• Buddies: Let classmates take turns being the
child’s “hearing buddy”

• Microphone protectors are designed to keep the microphones protected from dirt and moisture,
as well as reduce the effects of wind noise
• When the microphone protectors become dirty, the sound quality your child will receive is
noticeably degraded
• Freedom and Nucleus® 5 (CP810) microphone covers are designed to last up to 3 months,
however, for younger children who cannot advise sound quality, Cochlear recommend
changing microphone covers monthly.
29. Summary -
• Use of the Dry & Store every day is essential for the proper care of your child’s processor –
remember to replace Dri Brik every 2 months
• Microphone protectors are designed to keep the microphones clear of dust, moisture and reduce
wind effects. They should be replaced at least every 3 months (sooner if sound quality is reduced)
• Your child’s sound processor is valuable. Looking after it will maximise it’s performance and
minimise the risk of failure
31. When is FM helpful? –
• FM systems are helpful when there is a distant speaker,
room with poor acoustics and background noise.
• FM systems help a child better understand speech in noisy situations by presenting the teacher’s
voice at a level that is greater than competing background noise in the classroom.
32. How does an FM system help? –
Distance from the teacher in the classroom
– Teacher’s voice will become quieter as it travels to the back of the room
Louder - громче
– At a certain distance the level of background noise is greater than the teachers voice
Teacher’s voice –
Background noise –

35. Summary -
Nucleus 5
• The dual microphone and SmartSound technology in Nucleus 5 can enhance you child’s ability
listen to the teacher in a noisy classroom
• Nucleus 5 has benefits beyond the classroom, most notably the highest water and dust resistance
rating for a behind the ear processor.
• Regardless of whether your child uses one cochlear implant, a cochlear implant and a hearing aid,
or two cochlear implants, FM systems can dramatically enhance your child’s learning experience
36. How listening with two
ears enhances your child’s learning experience
Why is it better to hear with two ears
and what are the options?
38. Keep second ear stimulated
Most important thing to remember is to keep the second ear stimulated, either through
the use of hearing aid or cochlear implant
At a minimum, a hearing aid keeps the nerve cells in the ear stimulated. By not
wearing a hearing device, the ear does not get stimulated, which may cause the ear to
lose its ability to process sound.
39. Listening with two ears –
• When we hear with two ears we get more than
just double the sound:
• Our brain uses the information from two ears to
provide sound that is more natural, fuller and in
“3D”
40. Listening with two ears: Localising sounds –
• With only one
hearing ear we
cannot determine
the direction
a sound comes from
41. Listening with two ears: Localising sounds –
• With sound being heard
in both ears, the brain is able to detect the
very small time differences between when
the sound hits the ear closest to the sound
and the ear that is furthest from the sound.
• Using this information
we are able to determine which direction the
sound came from
42. Listening with two ears: Hearing in noise –
• In a classroom this can assist your child in
determining which of their classmates is
speaking during a lesson and more easily
participate in classroom discussions
• Additionally, when walking to and from
school, your child will more easily be able to
determine where sounds are coming from,
which may make them feel safer
43. Hearing the teacher, no matter where they are standing –
• With two hearing ears, the
child will always have
a hearing ear facing the
teacher
• Research shows that children
with two hearing ears perform
better at school
44. Your child can focus more easily –
With sound being received in
two ears the brain is able to
focus more easily on the
sounds of interest
This means your child can
more easily focus on the
teachers voice
Notes de l'éditeur
Dear Parents and colleagues! All of us have a dream that our child should be among the Best performers in School. We constantly ask ourselves what can we do to help him to achieve that. Parents play a significant role in this. Because, parents and only parents have a complete historical, social and emotional perspective.
Involve him in daily activities like cutting vegetables, folding clothes, serving meals. Give him lot of instructions but naturally.
The child will be successful in class only if the child’s language is at par with that of his classmates. Ask more difficult questions for mental stimulation. Do not stick to What, who and where questions Create simple problems and expect him to help you to solve Conversation is communication. Words are just labels. Teach him language and not vocab.
To check his implant with 6 sounds test To ask questions and to raise requests To be able to explain his device to his friends and teachers
The child should be able to converse with an unfamiliar speaker Please, repeat. please, speak little slowly It is the child’s responsibility to make him understood by others. Do not jump to help him.
Most of our children have receptive language but they do not develop expressive language. To help him to start a conversation, give surprises. Create a need for communication. Pretend to be ignorant.
In school, your child needs more revision of new words Prepare him for new language in advance to build his confidence in communication
Seating Environment
There are four areas to work with for success in school Acoustics mean there is no echo and the sound is clear Some Small actions can give great results
Sound becomes softer with the distance. Notice how much he can hear if he is sitting away from the teacher
Bilateral helps to listen better in noise but the voice is drowned in noise for a child with unilateral implant
You can change the buddy every month Buddy may help him to write notes in the diary
It will give you Tips and Hints to prepare a child for a school
Caring for your Processor is the most important step that contribute to your child’s hearing performance. It helps us to minimize the inconvenience caused. The caring level should be equivalent to or more than of a diamond jewellery bought by a women. Once you have invested in a huge some of money you realize the value and take care of it, then why not the processor? This care can be developed as we regularly develop healthy habits in one’s regular life, like washing your hands before eating, keep your hair neat etc. Now lets see how we can do the same.
The most important habit that we have to inculcate is drying your sound processor. Here there is a pictorial representation of one of our dry & store. Every processor has its own Dry & Store or Dry Aid Kit. 2. Steps to be followed are: Switch off your sound processor Dethatch the rechargeable battery from the processor Keep the coil, coil cable, coil magnet and the processor in the Drying unit provided. Please recheck for processor being switched off before keeping it for drying. If you need to charge your rechargeable battery, you may remove it before placing the processor, coil cable, coil and coil magnet into the Dry & Store.
4. The important aspect of the sound processor is the input given to it and its thru microphone. Now how do we take care of it? There are microphone - protectors designed as name says it that it is to protect the microphone. Now from what and why do we need them? To protect the dirt and moisture entering in the microphone, which can degrade the sound quality. To reduce the effect of noise created by wind As the microphone protectors become dirty the sound quality is noticeable degraded. As an observation, you can hear the sound through Monitor Earphones when you put a new microphone and hear the sound again while replacing them. Now when should they be changed? For Freedom and N 5 the microphone covers need to be replaced every 3 months. But for babies who cannot differentiate between the sound quality, Cochlear recommends changing it every month. This way we are ensuring that the sound quality remains good all the time & the child gets the maximum advantage.
So, an FM system: [read from slide] There is a great interactive tool provided by Phonak which provides simulations of a classroom environment that you can manipulate (such as distance of the teacher, volume of teacher’s voice, and amount of background noise (with and without FM system and with and without the new Dynamic Fm system range). Click on the interactive FM tool from this site: https://www.phonakpro.com/com/b2b/en/products/fm.html
Generally speaking, as sound travels, it attenuates so when a teacher speaks, the sound spreads out as it travels and gets quieter and harder for the child to hear. The sound also bounces around from the walls and ceilings (this is called reverberation) which causes interference between the sound waves to occur (we will talk about this next). In today’s classrooms, teachers do not necessarily stand from the from to teach either – the distance of the teacher’s voice may vary as they move around the classroom interacting with the students. Add in some background noise in the classroom and this can also help to get an idea of the challenge of depicting the signal in a classroom.

FM stands for "frequency modulation" and is a common form of radio transmission (e.g. some radio stations tune into a specific frequency or number, like 106.5MHz FM or “classic FM” a radio station for classical music – other radio stations may use ‘AM’ tuning). [please insert market appropriate radio station if using comparison]. An FM system refers to wireless technology that helps people better understand speech in noisy situations. It consists of a a microphone and transmitter on the speaker and a receiver for the listener (generally with some type of sound transducer like a cochlear implant system or hearing aid) .
If the hearing loss is only mild to moderate, you should use a hearing aid. The hearing aid and the cochlear implant can be programmed to compliment each other to ensure your child enjoys the benefits of hearing with two ears. It is important to monitor the hearing in the 2 nd ear to ensure hearing aids continue to provide benefit If the hearing loss is severe to profound a second cochlear implant is required to provide the benefits of two hearing ears for your child If it is not possible to provide a 2 nd implant at this stage it is recommended that the other ear is stimulated in some way by the use of hearing aids. Always remember, even if your child cannot receive a 2 nd implant, the tips, hints and information at the start of this presentation will ensure their best chance of success. They can still do very well at school, but they will need to work a little harder than if they had hearing in both ears Hearing loss in 2 nd ear (ear without Cochlear Implant) Mild - A hearing aid should be used. Your hearing professional can program both the hearing aid and the cochlear implant to ensure they work optimally together Moderate - A hearing aid should be used. A high powered hearing aid may be needed. Severe - Consider a cochlear implant for this ear. If it is not feasible to provide an implant at this stage, it is recommended to stimulate the ear with a high powered hearing aid Profound - A cochlear implant is recommend. If it is not feasible to provide an implant at this stage, it is recommended to stimulate the ear with a high powered hearing aided
