Google has removed the right hand side ads on desktops as of March 2016 globally. Google now displays 3-4 paid ads on top of the page, 3 ads at the bottom, and nothing on the right side. This is in response to Google’s study, which confirmed that less than 15% of users click these right side ads. Find out more about Google’s decision to remove these ads from Google Guru Monte Huebsch. Monte is a Google Adwords Specialist, his company Aussieweb Conversion is a Google SME Partner.

2. Google Ads on Desktop
• Google used to have
these search ads (only
on desktop searches):
– Left hand side has 3 ads
– Right hand side has 8 ads
• As of March 2016, these
ads were removed by
Google.

5. Why these ads were removed?
• Google gets 94% of their
income from Ad revenue.
• Based on Google's analysis, it
is confirmed that only less
than 15% of the users click on
the right hand side ads.
• Only about 1 in 7 people
actually click on the right side
ads.
6. How Google Ads Position are Determined?
• Google conducts an auction to get advertisers' desired spot
on Google Ads.
• Advertisers are competing by bidding against each other on
how much they are willing to pay.
• The highest bidder does not automatically get position 1 on
the right side ads.
• Google takes into consideration the clickthrough rate of the
Ads and they call this process as "Quality Score."
• Quality Score = Advertiser's bid price + clickthrough rate
7. Google Ads Moved to the Bottom
• Google right hands side ads are removed and placed at the bottom
of the page.
• Reasons for placing the ads at the bottom:
– Placing the ad at the bottom is more successful than placing it on
the right side. People are trained (by the frequent usage of
mobile devices) to look for information in a vertical manner.
– It shows that it is more likely that people will click ads at the
bottom rather than scrolling back up on the page.
– Less than 5% of internet users goes to page 2 of Google, while
less than 1% goes to page 3.
8. Desktop Layout copies Mobile Device Layout
• Google removed right
side ads to make the user
experience similar to a
mobile device.
• More people are using
mobile devices in
browsing. Thus, people
tend to scroll up and
down the page looking for
the information they
need.
9. Changes in Eye Movement Pattern
• The Golden Triangle Rule is a
traditional eye-tracking study
wherein it shows that the
movement of the eyes of internet
browsers is from left to right, then
down the page.
• The experience of using mobile
devices changed the Golden
Triangle rule and trained our eyes
to look up and down the screens
instead of the usual triangular
pattern.
10. Organic Search vs.
Paid Ads
• Organic search results will
not be removed by Google on
both desktop and mobile
searches.
• The ads are now located at
the top and bottom of the
organic search results.
• Less than 50% of Australians
realize that the first and the
last results in an organic
search are in fact, Paid Ads.

11. Organic Search vs. Paid Ads
• Paid Ads are marked by
a small word, "AD"
enclosed in a yellow
background ( ).
• Some internet users will
look for organic results.
• Others prefer clicking on
paid ads knowing that
those are from corporate
and reliable entities.
