Directions: This is a self- led art lesson using the Internet. You will be taking a virtual field trip online
to discover the artist Norman Rockwell (1894- 1978), an American illustrator and artist. Simply Begin
your tour by following the given links. You need to have headphones, so plug them in now.
Begin your journey....
A. Go to www.youtube.com
1. Type in 'American Chronicles part 1 Norman Rockwell.' Watch the video.
2. Type in 'American Chronicles part 2 Norman Rockwell.' Watch the video.
B. Go to www.nrm.org
1. Click on the 'Rockwell' tab. Underneath the tab, click on "About Norman Rockwell."
2. Go to 'A Brief Biography' and answer the questions on the "A Brief Biography on Norman
Rockwell' handout.
3. (Stay at www.nrm.org.) Click on the Rockwell tab. Now click on the Rockwell Timeline.
4. View the timeline thoughtfully, and click on a few of your favorite paintings and read about
them.
5. Click on or enlarge the painting titled 'Triple Self-Portrait, 1960'. Read the infomation given.
***Look at reference pictures of famous artists on Rockwell's canvas. Name the four

6. On the same timeline, click on the painting titled 'The Problem we All Live.' Watch the short

7. Now, click on the Collections tab (still at the nrm website;) and then the Rockwell's
Stockbridge Studio tab.
a. Read the page then click and view the interactive panoramic view of Rockwell's studio.
b. PRETEND you are now an illustrator for the Saturday Evening Post, 2013. Your assignment
is to design the cover of the magazine with an illustration of the exterior or interior of Norman
Rockwell's Stockbridge Studio. Do your drawing or design on the sheet provided. Your picture
should be as historically accurate as possible, so use pictures from the website.
