The session demonstrated a student-centered way to use a textbook regardless of the subject matter. Participants received information about projects titled “Chapter Summary PowerPoint Project” and “Online Textbook Quizzes.” Participants then learned that the chapter summary assignment involved the students presenting their summaries to classmates. Participants were shown sample student PowerPoints and learned that the online text quizzes were centered on instructor chosen topics. Students then constructed their own questions with accompanying answers using their textbooks to complete this activity. The third use of the textbook involved distributing a sample copy of a paper and then having the students use their textbook to label the parts of the paper. Participants were given copies of the assignments for adaptation to suit their courses.

Touchstone 3: Creating a Slide Presentation SCENARIO: You represent your company at a service organization dealing with one of these two issues: Facing Economic Change Engaging Civil Rights Your supervisor asked you to research information related to the history of one of these issues for your organization to help new employees and volunteers understand it better. You will need to create a slide presentation that summarizes your findings and recommendations. ASSIGNMENT: Back in Unit 2, you chose your issue and your sources and used the critical thinking process to begin to formulate an argument about your topic. Now you will refine your argument and create a slide presentation that’s due at the end of Unit 3. PRESENTATION REQUIREMENTS: Your presentation must be 7–11 slides long, not including the title and sources slides. It must include the following slides: title outline topic evidence (4–8 slides with both text and images) argument (making connections between past and present) sources If you’ve never used a presentation tool like PowerPoint or Google Slides before, don’t worry! The assignment template below will help you create slides for a basic slide presentation. Then you’ll be able to practice using the presentation technology as you put the finishing touches on your presentation. You can also refer back to the Unit 3 lessons that provide support for creating a solid slide presentation. Touchstone 3 TemplateTouchstone 3 Sample Before you get started, let’s look at how you’ll be building the presentation, step by step. A. Directions Step 1: Review Touchstone 2 Review the scenario and your work from Touchstone 2. You will need to use your primary and secondary sources, along with the critical thinking process you completed in that touchstone. Step 2: Create Presentation Slides Use a presentation tool like PowerPoint or Google Slides to outline and organize a presentation for new employees and volunteers to help them understand better how key historical events in U.S. History are connected to their work and impact society today. Slide Component Title Slide Your title slide will be the first slide and should give the viewer an idea of what your presentation will be about. Outline Slide An outline slide lets your audience know what to expect from your presentation. This doesn’t need to be the kind of detailed or thorough outline that you might use to plan out a research report. It just needs to include the main idea that each slide will cover—it might even just be the time period covered by that slide. Topic Slide Your topic is the same as the research question you selected in Unit 2. Define the historical challenges you are presenting on and expand on the topic of your presentation. What questions will you answer? What historical events and approaches will you explore? Evidence Slides (4-8 slides with both text and images) Now that you’ve reviewed your outline, it’s time to add i.

Writing Assignment: Illustration Essay You are required to submit the FINAL copy of this assignment, but you may first submit an optional DRAFT. This will allow you to receive qualitative feedback that can inform your revision. You should always avoid focusing solely on the grader’s DRAFT feedback; use the feedback as a supplement to the course lessons and your own revision ideas. Always expect to revise beyond what the DRAFT grader specifically notes. In short, an illustration essay will use clear, interesting examples to show, explain, and support a thesis statement (remember, your thesis is your main argument, or the main point you’re trying to make). One key to an effective illustration essay is to use enough details and specific examples to make your point effectively. In other words, descriptive writing is key. You have several options for this assignment, so you will need to choose one: Illustrate the ideal work environment. If everything was perfect at work, what would it be like? Describe everything in this environment—perhaps from the dispositions of your coworkers and supervisors to what clothes you wear to work. Illustrate what it means to be a “true friend.” What does being a “true friend” mean to you? What “true friends” have you had, and how do their actions coincide with being your definition of a “true friend?” Illustrate how your favorite team or player received their current standing or ranking. How did the team or player do in the most recent season? What qualities did this team or player demonstrate to earn this ranking? Look at your favorite poem or short story, and use illustration to explain what makes it your favorite. Do you enjoy the author’s language? Do you enjoy the storyline? What else do you enjoy that makes it your favorite? Illustrate the purpose of props on the set of your favorite media production. What props are there? Why are they important? Illustrate how to create your favorite dish. What steps are required to create this dish? Be sure that you take your audience through this process step by step! Illustrate how to play your favorite game. What steps and/or actions are necessary to play this game? Take your readers through the motions, step by step. The questions above are designed to help you begin brainstorming ideas; however, you are free to develop your own brainstorming questions and use them to develop your essay. Since the purpose of this essay is to illustrate, you should have enough specific details and examples for your essay to be considered an illustration essay. Many illustrations may come from your personal experiences. However, even personal experiences should be supported by research in college essays. Thus, you must cite at least one credible1 source to earn maximum credit for this essay. This resource from the course 1 Please note: Basic dictionary s.

(1a.) Assignment 3: Professional Portfolio—Resume/Vitae and list of References by Wednesday, September 2, 2015 For this assignment, you will submit the first document to be included in your Professional Portfolio: Your resume (if you are seeking employment immediately upon graduation) or your curriculum vitae (if you are applying to graduate school). At the end of the document, you should include a list of at least three references to whom you intend to send a letter requesting a reference/recommendation, you can also submit your transcripts, but these documents are optional. Resume/Vitae Update your resume (if you are seeking employment immediately upon graduation) or your curriculum vitae (if you plan to apply to graduate school). Try to tailor it to your specific goal. In other words, keep the resume focused on how your skills apply to the work force and keep the curriculum vitae focused on your academic goals. You must also identify three potential references to whom you intend to send a letter requesting a reference/recommendation, with their contact information provided (name, address, e-mail address, and/or telephone number). These can be current or former professors, employers, supervisors, etc. For each reference, specify how that person is familiar with your academic or job performance. A sample Reference List is available at: http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/637/1/ To find tips on writing and organizing resumes, and other aspects of a career search or graduate school admission, search the EBSCO database for both résumé and the curriculum vitae guidelines. What is the distinction between the resume and the CV? Go to the EBSCO database and search for: “ Resume or vita? What’s the difference?” You may want to visit the Psi Chi International Honor Society in Psychology Website’s page, “The Curriculum Vita: A Student’s Guide to Preparation” at: http://www.psichi.org/?092EyeWin05dLandrum . The article outlines the required sections of the vitae and provides an image of a sample vitae (click on the links to Figure 1 within the text of the “Sections of the CV” paragraph to view the sample). ENG 123: Assignment Two, Milestone One Guidelines and Rubric Draft Overview: Persuasion is a constant in each and every one of our lives. No matter where we look, what we read, what we see, or who we interact with, we are inevitably going to encounter some form of persuasion. Advertisements want us to buy things. Newspapers and television want to convince us of what we should feel about events. We are put into positions where we must defend our thoughts and beliefs to others, and the process we apply is typically some form of persuasion. Persuasive writing is one of the most powerful forms of writing—it has the ability to influence one's thoughts, and also the ability to change one's mind about a particular issue. The persuasive essay is an ideal opportunity to support an opinion on an issue utilizing researched facts and information. This also gives the chance to recognize that there is an opposing viewpoint to a position and to refute their argument, noting they are the intended audience of the piece. Prompt: For this milestone, you will submit a draft of your persuasive essay. At this point in the course, if you have completed the previous milestone guided activities, the textboxes should be combined and transformed into a draft. This milestone will help you address the critical elements from Sections II - IV below, which will ultimately inform your final submission of the persuasive essay. You have until the deadline to work on this draft. Whatever is completed by the deadline will be submitted to your instructor for grading and feedback. Specifically the following critical elements must be addressed: I. Introduction: This is where readers will have a chance to get an idea of what your essay will be about and what you will prove throughout. Do not give all of your information away here, but give readers a sample of what is to come. Do not forget to review your writing plan to make sure you are hitting all of the points that you planned out, while also stating your argument. A. Overview the issue you have selected, briefly describing main points and your argument. B. Compose an engaging thesis that states the argument that you will prove and support throughout your essay. This statement will give direction to your essay and should be well thought out. II. Body: The body is your opportunity to describe and support your argument in depth. Make sure your thoughts and evidence are clear and organized in a way that is easy for readers to follow and understand. A. Be sure that you write multiple paragraphs that are focused, clearly state their intent, and move logically from one to the other, building the thesis argument as the essay progresses. B. Your body paragraphs should support your argument by combining thoughts and ideas with evidence from sources. There is no such thing as a right or wrong argument; the key is how it is supported and the quality of the evidence used. C. Address and refute any opposing viewpoints to your argument. This i.
