Why  do  I  need  to  do  this? • To  get  a  job  in  journalism  you  need  to  show  you  what  you  can  do. • Examples  of  published  – and  class  work  – can  be  a  deciding  factor  in   whether  you  get  an  interview,  and  indeed  if  you  get  hired  or  not. • In  the  past  portfolios  used  to  consist  of  newspaper  clippings  in  a   binder  which  you  brought  to  interview  with  you. • Now,  increasingly,   they  tend  to  be  online  only.

What  content  should  I  feature? • Put  your  best  foot  forward. • You  could  include  everything  you’ve   ever  written… • Or  you  can  highlight  particular  skills  /   and  types  of  stories  tailored to  the  type   of  job  you’re  seeking  e.g.  sports,   lifestyle,  hard  news  etc.

How  do  I  go  about  it? • There’s  a  MASSIVE  range  of  platforms  out  there. • You  need  to  be  familiar  with  them  and  which  one/ones  might  work   best  for  you.  Depending  on  what  you want  to  showcase. • Factors  which  may  influence  your  decision  will  include: • Design • Functionality  (incl.  multimedia   hosting) • Mobile  responsiveness • Customization  incl.  URL • Ease  of  use  e.g.  do  I  have  to  code? • Cost
