1. The Invisible Dilemma Presentation by: Gah Tang SLC: Magnet (The Study of Dark Matter)
2. Dark Matter Defined Misnomer Dark Matter doesn’t really mean its “dark” Invisible in terms of visible spectrum Electromagnetic spectrum Wide range from radio waves to micro waves to ultraviolet waves Found through mathematical calculations Thus commonly called the “missing mass”
3. What’s so great about Dark Matter? It’s in the nature of human beings to want to solve what we don’t know Knowledge helps us progress as a society in terms of a better standard of living Bertrand Russell said, “We know very little, yet it is astonishing that we know so much, and still more astonishing that so little knowledge can give us so much power.”
4. Why Dark Matter? Continued… Dark matter is another part of the puzzle to solving the mysteries of the universe
5. Thesis If we pursue Dark Matter, discoveries from studying it can: bolster our theories of gravity revolutionize the Big Bang Theory and lead to new discoveries like dark energy
6. Gravity The attraction of two mass Discovered by Sir Isaac Newton Bigger mass, Bigger attraction Earth, Sun, Galaxy, etc. Galaxies clump to form a spiral shape Structure seems impossible Without mass “holding” it with gravity, the spirals would not have formed.
7. Big Bang Theory Big Bang Theory has been proven to be the most reasonable theory that predicts the origins of our universe Robert K. Soberman and MaruiceDubin Invented theoretical cosmic meteoroids called cosmoids Believe that Dark Matter consists mainly of cosmoids
8. Big Bang Theory Continued… Redshift Used to describe the change in color to red of an object moving away from the observer Used mainly to track the expansion of the universe Soberman and Dubin predicts that cosmoids alter what we see as redshift
9. Further discoveries Dark Energy Upon finding the theoretical Dark Matter, Dark Energy followed Both Dark Energy and Dark Matter were found by mathematically calculating the mass and energy of the universe Found that the numbers don’t add up
10. Further discoveries cont… More theories conjured just from dispute MOND Modified Newtonian Dynamics Counters Einstein’s theory of relativity Applies to slow accelerating mass such as galaxies Would show to disprove dark matter
