End of Year Projects  in Earth Science
Pick one of the following projects to complete... -Create a Children's Book of Reasons for Seasons  or -Create a Children's Book of Causes of Moon Phases
-Each person will sign up for one of the projects... -There are only a few spots available for each project... -You will be allowed to work with a partner, but you will turn in your own project... -Yes, I will accept projects early... -No, I will not accept projects late... -YOU are responsible for making sure that you get the work done... you are almost 7th graders, now... HAVE FUN
Create a Children's Book of Reasons for Seasons
Task:   Create a children’s book depicting the following science concepts:  Reason for Seasons Guidelines:   Your children's book must be at least 6 pages long and contain illustrations on each page.  Your children's book must accurately explain the seasons or moon phases.  Your children’s book must address the following questions Seasons -  What causes the cycle of seasons on Earth?  What do the words solstice and equinox mean?  How are they related to the position of Earth's axis?  When do the longest days occur?  Longest nights?  (for the Northern Hemisphere)  Are there areas that are consistently cooler?  What about consistently warmer?  Why?
Exceeds Standards (17-20 points) Meets (14-16 points) Does Not Meet (below 13 points)
Create a Children's Book of Causes of Moon Phases
Task:   Create a children’s book depicting the following science concepts:  Causes of Moon Phases Guidelines:   Your children's book must be at least 6 pages long and contain illustrations on each page.  Your children's book must accurately explain the seasons or moon phases.  Your children’s book must address the following questions Moon Phases -  Since the moon does not produce light, how can you see it?  Why does the moon change its phases as the month progresses?  Why are a "day" and a "year" on the moon the same length?  What do the terms gibbous, crescent, waxing, and waning mean?  How many days does it take the Moon to revolve around Earth?
Exceeds Standards (17-20 points) Meets (14-16 points) Does Not Meet (below 13 points)
All students will complete with a partner Planet Mania
Your task:   With your partner, it is your job to find out at much as possible about the planet you al have selected to research by completing each of the project requirements outlined below. Requirements for the project: 1. Complete a  visual display  for your planet, such as, a poster, large drawing, or a 3-D model.  (What does your planet look like? Illustrate its colors, surface features, and other unique features.)
2. Complete an  information pamphlet/fact sheet  for your planet.  This needs to include the information below plus 5 more facts of your choosing.  You can handwrite or type this pamphlet/sheet and set it up the way you would like (i.e. a chart, a list, in flip-boxes, etc.)  15 facts total 1. Diameter and Mass- Compare the size of your planet to that of the Earth. 2. Average distance from the Sun 3. Surface Gravity-Compare the gravity of your planet to that of the Earth. 4. Average Temperature- What is the temperature range, highs and lows, found  on your planet? (Fahrenheit and Celsius)  5. Length of sidereal day 6. Length of year 7. Number of observed moons- What are the names of your planet's moons? 8. Atmospheric Make-up- What is the atmosphere like on your planet? List the  gases present and their percentages. 9. Relative Position in the solar system (i.e. 3 rd  planet from the sun) 10. Mythological origin of the name of your planet.
3. Create a  poem or song  about your planet. Your poem or song needs to be at least  three  stanzas or verses long .  It also needs to address the following question  (but, can include other information, too):  Do you think there could be life as we know  if on your planet?  Why/why not?
