John Lennon (1940 – 1980) Born in Liverpool, Merseyside, NW England, UK, during a German air raid in World War II Biographies: Part 1
John Lennon, being as he was so influential, often gave his thoughts on life itself There are many quotes in existence that, even to this day, still remain true and make sense “The more I see the less I know for sure” “Reality leaves a lot to the imagination” “A dream you dream alone is only a dream; a dream you dream together is reality” All You Need Is…Quotes?
Imagine, If You Will
Paul McCartney (1942 – Present) Grew up in a traditional north of England working-class society, located in Liverpool Biographies: Part 2
George Harrison (1943 – 2001) Like his future band mates, Harrison was not born into wealth Born into a working-class family, Harrison attended Dovedale Primary School, three years behind John Lennon Biographies: Part 3
Harrison quipped "We had Get Back in the can, but one day we just decided that we'd like to do a newer album. There was no particular reason -- we just wanted to do some of our newest songs. The trouble with making albums is that it is difficult to represent the group, as it is at present, I mean like right now. Abbey Road was only finished a few weeks ago, so it does fairly present the Beatles as we are it this point in time.” George Harrison’s View On “Abbey Road”

A Collection Of Albums (Cont’d)
As it pertains to the success of each Beatles album, they made a ton of money from sales Their most popular album, among the general public, was Revolver This album sold over one billion copies and with it, The Beatles became such a huge influence on the course of rock music Money, And The Enjoyable Pursuit
Sure, we know about the Beatles’ success, but what was the economy like in the 60’s? If you have $100 Converted from 1960 to 2005 it would be equivalent to $679.09 today In 1960 a new house cost $12,700.00 and by 1969 was $15,500.00 In 1960 the average cost of new car was $2,600.00 and by 1969 was $3,270.00 A Few Questions Left Unanswered
Break Down The Songs: “Come Together” (1969) Vocals: John Lennon Guitar: Paul McCartney Bass: George Harrison Drums: Ringo Starr The first verse, “Here come old flat top,” is about Ringo Starr, because he usually wore his hair flat and/or long
Break Down The Songs: “Come Together” (1969) Cont’d The second verse, “He wear no shoeshine,” is about George Harrison, because he converted to Middle Eastern religion and he usually went barefoot The third verse, “He bag production,” is about John Lennon. The lyric “Feet down below his knees” described Lennon’s stubbornness and reluctance to change his ways The final verse, “He roller coaster,” is about Paul McCartney. The lyric “Got to be good looking ‘cause he’s so hard to see” portrays the thought that McCartney was the best looking in their group of four
Break Down The Songs: “Eleanor Rigby” (1966) Vocals: Paul McCartney Harmony Vocals: George Harrison & John Lennon Note: Ringo Starr was not involved in this particular song About the song: The song’s tone takes on a morbid and empty tone. The main character, Eleanor Rigby, seems to be lonely, so she puts on a proverbial mask to hide her true feelings from others
Break Down The Songs: “Eleanor Rigby” (1966) (Cont’d) The first verse, “Eleanor Rigby picks up the rice in a church where a wedding has been,” simply describes her own loneliness. It also goes further by talking about the “mask” she wears in order to hide her feelings The second verse, “Father McKenzie, writing the words of a sermon no one will hear,” describes the fact that nobody is in church to listen to him; They could care less The third verse, “Eleanor Rigby died in the church and was buried along with her name,” goes into describing how the Father did not care about her death
Vocals: John Lennon Guitar: George Harrison Bass: Paul McCartney Drums/Cymbals: Ringo Starr "Nothing is real and nothing to get hung about" - nothing really matters because everything dealing with their fame was/is fake; the people, the places, the sentiment. Break Down The Songs: “Strawberry Fields Forever” (1967)
Break Down The Songs: “Strawberry Fields Forever” (1967) (Cont’d) "Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see" - When you don't pay attention to the world around you you tend to misunderstand situations though that tends to make things easy because you only see what you want to see. "It's getting hard to be someone but it all works out, it doesn't matter much to me" - He doesn't know who he is anymore but when the others are there it seems okay so the fakeness doesn't matter.
Break Down The Songs: “Strawberry Fields Forever” (1967) (Cont’d) "No one I think is in my tree, I mean it must high or low" - John thought no one ever understood him because he was on either a higher or lower level than they they were. "That is you can't, you know, tune in, but it's all right, that is I think it's not too bad" - He used to hate that people couldn't be like him or understand him but now he was realizing that even if they couldn't 'tune in' to what he was thinking it was cool because he liked them anyway.
"Always, no sometimes, think it's me, but you know I know when it's a dream" - he sometimes (said always but then realized that it wasn't always) blames himself for everything that goes wrong but then realized that it's the fakeness (dream) of stardom. "I think I know, I mean a 'yes' but it's all wrong, that is I think I disagree." - he's saying he thought he knew the answers but then he realized he was wrong so now he disagreeswith the stuffhe was pulling. Break Down The Songs: “Strawberry Fields Forever” (1967) (Cont’d)
As we know, there recently was video game released on the market, in honor of The Beatles It is a new chapter in the series, “Rock Band,” where the players can take control of their favorite band mate The game uses many popular tracks and it accurately simulates the feeling of being onstage with the Fab Four If Ever There Was A “Rock Band” (Popular Culture Influence)
The Beatles, both individually & collectively, were successful They had released several albums, all of which were commercially successful Their most popular album was released in 1966 and was entitled “Revolver” They Are More Popular Than…You Know
Without the Beatles, bands today wouldn’t have made it as far as they have Their influence on artists as diverse as Elton John and Pink Floyd was obvious as the 1970s began The group is generally seen as the originator of the concept album, with 1967's Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band Musical Influence
While the Beatles' star waned with the advent of punk and new wave music in the late 1970s, even then the influence of the Beatles' sound and style could still be heard in artists like Squeeze, the Police and Elvis Costello A decade later a whole new generation of young musicians rediscovered the Fab Four Musical Influence (Cont’d)
The late 1980’s, Manchester-centered, musical phenomenon known as "baggy" not only saw its musical aficionados sporting Beatle-esque haircuts but also drew heavily on the 1960’s The Beatles' influence was particularly present in the guitar-style and song arrangements of The Stone Roses, with guitarist John Squire citing them as one of his main influences Musical Influence (Cont’d)
Nevertheless, with such an amalgamation (Joining/Blend) of sounds, their music never even closely resembled The Beatles That was to still to come. First with fellow Liverpool natives, The La's, with their 1990 hit, There She Goes In most cases, fusing Beatles psychedelia with electronic elements taken from the simultaneously developing acid house scene Musical Influence (Cont’d)
Indeed the mid-90s saw a whole host of Beatles-influenced bands succeeding commercially, such as Dodgy with their uplifting guitar-pop and sun-drenched choruses However, taking the world by storm in 1994, with their debut album, Definitely Maybe, Manchester's Gallagher brothers lived and breathed Beatles, to the point of namedropping the Fab Four in every interview Musical Influence (Cont’d – 1990’s)
Although it seemed that the Beatles heavily influenced many of the successful indie bands in the 1990s, their pop has been savored in unexpected areas too - many people have compared Angels by Robbie Williams with Hey Jude American skate-punk band, Offspring did a remarkable rehash of Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da in Why Don't You Get A Job from their Americana album A Rebirth
Enter The Beatles. Long hair. Loud music. Radical yet cool look. Beatle boots. Tight suits. Witty personalities and great humor not mention four very distinctive and recognizable voices. Add to this, harmony with good looks While they did do cover songs, they clearly were great songwriters from the start. After the Ed Sullivan broadcast, nearly all public pop stations were devoted to Beatle music. In some cases, they only played their music for days. The Beatles: They Had Class
For guys, it meant style and long hair from that time onward. No more hair grease, no combing it back from the forehead like Elvis, no more haircuts with rims around the ear. That was a very major cultural event in the 60’s Teenage clothing copied the Beatle look with collarless shirts, tight jeans, Beatle boots The Beatles: They Had Class (Cont’d)
Musically, The Beatles showed pop music how to be a rock band with their huge Marshall amplifiers or Vox equipment Ask Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, Oasis, Nirvana or any rock artist about influences, The Beatles are there The Beatles' impact is all over today. Listen to pop music, whether it is a guitar lick, harmonies, song structure, lyrics More On Influence
Beginning with theirEd Sullivan Show appearance, the Beatles brought to a new generation, much more than just a great, new sound and long hair for boys Like others before them, the Beatles were vilified and accused of corrupting the youth of America The American Debate

  • 33. Beginning with theirEd Sullivan Show appearance, the Beatles brought to a new generation, much more than just a great, new sound and long hair for boys Like others before them, the Beatles were vilified and accused of corrupting the youth of America The American Debate

  17. Notes: http://www.lyricinterpretations.com/Beatles/Strawberry-Fields-ForeverAbout the song: Strawberry Fields is an orphanage. John's aunt's house was right next door and John used to go over there as a child and play there. It was not a park, it was nota retirement community. It was written while John was filming in Spain and realizing he missed the boys. Later Ringo came to keep him company.

  26. Notes: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/1452393.stmIn an interview in 1996, Noel Gallagher said “It's beyond an obsession. It's an ideal for living. I don't even know how to justify it to myself. With every song that I write, I compare it to The Beatles”On an altogether different scale of obsession, Liam Gallagher even named his first son, Lennon
  27. Notes: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/1452393.stmNevertheless, Oasis have been the closest it gets to Beatles copyists, apart from, say, the Bootleg Beatles. However, although they do steal the occasional Beatles melody, their success has focused around their ability to write their own melodies and then arrange them in a Beatle-esque style, but with a rocky, attitude-dowsed edge. And although they have never quite experienced The Beatlemania-like levels of success the Fab Four did, they've broken chart records and both Noel and Liam are A-list tabloid fodder.
  28. Notes: http://www.zimbio.com/The+Beatles%27+influence+on+popular+culture/articles/5/The+Impact+of+The+BeatlesAmerica, then, was like the movie, "Hairspray". Very clean cut, the music-sappy and stupid-innocent. Even Elvis, who was the 50's rebel, seemed to have lost his edge and became too clean, too nice, his songs simply sucked. It was the British rock bands that showed America how it should be done.
  29. Notes: http://www.zimbio.com/The+Beatles%27+influence+on+popular+culture/articles/5/The+Impact+of+The+BeatlesThe Fashion originated in London on Carnaby street. Schools and many parents fought long hair for many years, some high schools had a policy of no long hair to the collar up until 1967-8.
  30. Notes: http://www.zimbio.com/The+Beatles%27+influence+on+popular+culture/articles/5/The+Impact+of+The+BeatlesThere have been two movies where the soundtrack consisted of only Beatle songs (done as covers). The concept of Beatlemania is hard to comprehend if you were not alive or were too young, or simply missed it. It was one of those things that you say, "you had to be there". No amount of words can even begin to show the impact of The Beatles.

They inspired kids to take up guitar, and before anyone knew it, garage bands were popping up all over the place. Picture – The Beatles on Ed Sullivan.
