  1. Introduction.. My name is Brooke Ashley I’m an Assistant Director in the Study Abroad Office. I studied abroad in Italy as an undergraduate student and in the UK as a graduate student, here in the College of Education. When I came to college, I didn’t think studying abroad was for me. I couldn’t imagine leaving everyone back at home for so long, and no one in my family even had a passport! It’s a really good thing I changed my mind. Without a doubt, studying abroad was the absolute best decision I made in college. It had such an impact on me that I decided to pursue a career in International Education and work in a study abroad office so I could help students like you have the wonderful experience of study abroad. I’m here today to give you all a brief overview of study abroad at NCSU and I hope to encourage you to consider studying abroad while you are a student here.
  2. First I just want to point out a few facts that some people might not know about study abroad. 1- You do not need to be proficient in another language to study abroad. There are many program options in English speaking countries such as the UK, Ireland, Australia, Ghana, and South Africa. It is also possible to study in several countries where English is not the primary language, but they teach many courses in English, for example Scandanavian countries such as Sweden, Denmark, and Finland offer a wide variety of courses in English, so there is no foreign language requirement to study there. 2- Studying abroad can be very affordable. The tuition for many programs is the same as the tuition at NCSU. There are also scholarships available as well as financial aid which will help to cover the costs. 3- You can study abroad as early as the summer after your freshman year! You don’t have to wait until your junior year to study abroad. 4- Studying abroad does not have to put you behind in your coursework because you can take courses that will transfer back to NC State. You’ll just want to make sure to plan ahead and talk with your academic adviser early to fit studying abroad into your plans. As part of the application process, you’ll meet with an adviser to make sure you are taking classes abroad that will transfer for your major, minor, or Gen Ed. courses at NC State.
  3. There are many benefits of studying abroad, for example, Studying abroad is a great addition to your resume and helps you distinguish yourself in today’s competitive job market. It shows potential employers that you are adaptable and flexible and that you can navigate new situations and communicate with people from different countries and cultures. Your future classrooms will likely be cross-cultural environments. It’s imperative that as an educator, you help students learn the value of diverse viewpoints and cultures. Studying abroad allows you to enhance and develop skills to bring a sense of cross-cultural competence into your future classrooms. Studying abroad allows you to earn academic credit towards your NC State degree, while at the same time experiencing another country. Instead of just traveling to a country for vacation you’ll really get to explore and know the city and the culture where you study. And you will be making progress towards graduation at the same time. While studying abroad, you will most likely meet other international students from around the world, and other students from the host country where you are studying. When students come in to talk to me after their semester abroad, they usually have stories about the friends that they’ve met and how they are already making plans to visit each other in the coming months. Another benefit is that you grow as an individual. Being away from home and out of your comfort zone will be a challenge and will therefore force you to learn about yourself, gain confidence, mature, and learn new communication and adaptation skills.
  4. A few specific examples of programs that might interest Education majors…. The handout you’ve received is the product of a year’s worth of research done by our office and the heads of your department in the College of Education. The schools listed are what we have discovered to be the best options for you as education majors. These schools have fantastic education faculties, and the courses they offer are generally basic education courses or GEP courses you can get out of the way. Our summer and short-term programs at State offer you the opportunity to study abroad with an NCSU faculty member and a group of students. In our research, we found that it is best if education majors go abroad earlier, rather than later, in their collegiate career. The college of ed really wants you to go, but they and we know that it can be difficult once you’re very far into your major to find space/room to study abroad. So save up your GEPs, go before your upper level courses are in full swing, and get started early. Its never too early to start looking at Study Abroad!
  5. Partner university study abroad students with NC K-8 public school classroom. Several times throughout your semester abroad, you will communicate with your assigned classroom back in the US via webcam. Your lesson will include information about your host country as it relates to what they are currently studying in the classroom. This is a great way to not only get experience working with K-8 classrooms, but also a way to introduce young students to another country and culture. All of the past participants have really enjoyed this experience, and the K-8 students absolutely love it!!
  6. To learn more about the various program options, I’d like to encourage you to visit our website at any time- on the website you will find a complete listing of the study abroad opportunities, as well as other resources such as scholarship information and the scholarship application. And you can also contact our office to set up what we call a General Advising Session- at this small group session, you’ll meet with one of our staff members to learn the basic information about study abroad and ask questions.
