3. ANC
It is the governing Political Party in South Africa.
It has been the ruling party since 1994.
Cyril Ramaphosa is the leader of this party now.
4. Beginning
It was founded on 8th January 1912
By John Langalibalele Dube.
Founded as the South African Native National Congress (SANNC).
5. Mission and Objectives
Its primary mission was to bring all Africans together as one people.
To defend their rights and freedoms.
This included giving full voting rights to black South Africans and mixed race South Africans.
To end the system of apartheid introduced by the Nationalist Party Government.
The ANC originally attempted to use non-violent protests to end apartheid.
After the Sharpeville Massacre in 1960, it involved in violence to achieve.
6. Umkhonto we Sizwe
On 8 April 1960, the administration of Charles Robberts Swart banned the ANC in South Africa.
After the ban, the ANC formed the Umkhonto we Sizwe (Spear of the Nation).
A Youth Organization.
To fight against Apartheid utilising guerrilla warfare and sabotage.
7. ANC
After 30 years of exiled struggle, the country began its move towards full democracy.
During that period many ANC members had been imprisoned or forced abroad.
On 3 February 1990, State President F. W. de Klerk lifted the ban on the ANC.
On 11th February 1910 he released Nelson Mandela from prison.
8. On 17th March 1992, the apartheid referendum was passed by the white only electorate.
It removed apartheid and allowed the ANC to contest in the 1994 election.
For the first time this election allowed all South Africans to vote for their national government.
Since the 1994 election the ANC has performed better than 55% in all general elections.
It is the ruling party of South Africa since 1994.

9. Tripartite Alliance
The ANC holds a historic alliance with the South African Communist Party (SACP) and
Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU).
It is known as the Tripartite Alliance.
The SACP and COSATU have not contested any election in South Africa, but field candidates
through the ANC, hold senior positions in the ANC, and influence party policy and dialogue.
