2. What is BYOD?
BYOD is an acronym for Bring Your Own Device.
A “device” is defined as a privately owned laptop,
tablet computing device, netbook, notebook, e-
Reader, iPod Touch, iPad, or smartphone.
For this program, “device” also includes any
similar product owned by Alief and provided for
student use.
3. What types of devices may I bring?
● Laptop or Netbook
● Chromebook
● Tablet
● Smart phone
● eReader
4. • You are digital natives and live in a world where
information creation and consumption is constantly
occurring.
• We feel that access to the tools and resources of a
world-wide network and understanding when and
how these tools are appropriately and effectively
used are imperative in each student’s education.
• We envision a learning environment where
technology is a part of us, not apart from us.
• Harness technology that our students are using
every day for education purposes.
Why BYOD?
5. • Projects
• Research
• Response device for assessments
• Collaboration
• Presentations
• Other instructional and school related purposes
How will mobile devices be
used in my classrooms?
6. • Students will access the internet through the Alief
BYOD wireless network on a registered device.
• This network will provide filtered internet access.
• Any and all access may be monitored for the
purposes of network security and student safety.
How will students access the internet?

This page addresses the definition of BYOD as it applies in Alief.
These are the only acceptable devices allowed. For an eReader to be used for anything but reading, it will have to be an internet available model
We want to be able to incorporate more digital learning into our classroom time
We will take this slowly at first until we all get used to using your devices in the classroom. The may not be an everyday experience. I will let you know when you will have the opportunity to bring and use your phone in our classroom
It’s easy to access the Alief BYOD. We will go over this on our first day of bringing and using devices
I’m sure you remember the AUP that were as reviewed with you earlier this year. All of it applies to using your personal device in any building in Alief ISD as well as using any district owned device. The AUP is the legal document that clearly states all of the do’s and don’ts applied to using the Alief ISD network.
This document is also in your Student Handbook if you need to refer to it again.
The RUP guidelines which you also signed and went over are more about your behaviors as they apply to protecting yourself, protecting others and protecting intellectual property.
Protecting Yourself: this refers to not only protecting your privacy when using the internet or social media, but also being mindful of your “digital footprint” as it pertains to your reputation. Once an image, comment etc is posted on any social meda, it is forever! Even though you may take it down, it is still on someone else page or computer.
Protecting Others: refers to reporting any bullying or other inappropriate behaviors to an adult. If you are not reporting and helping solve the problem, you are a part of the problem and could be held accountable.
Protecting Intellectual Property. This refers to taking other peoples, photos, images, music, words .and using as your own rather than giving credit in the form of a citation
Most of you who will be using personal devices instructional in classrooms will be using phones. Please remember that any charges incurred are your responsibility. It is up to you to follow all of your campuses guidelines on where and when these can be out of your pockets!
This is a filtered, and monitored internet connection. You will not be able to get to your network folder using this network.
You will need to go over the Parent letter with your parent or guardian and both sign it before you will be allowed to use a device at school for instruction.
The sooner everyone in the class returns the signed portion, the sooner using these in the classroom can begin. Even if you do not currently have a device to use in school, you must bring the signed portion back for everyone else to begin.
If your parent agrees that when and if you have a device, you can use it in school, then he/she would sign it and return it.
If your parent/guardian does not want you to use your device for instruction, he/she needs to sign the form and state that they are not in agreement.
