2. There are many popularbrands today that sell backpacks of various designs.
AmericanTourister, Adidas, Puma, Nike, The North Face, High Sierra
andSuperDry are but a few brands that dominate the market, both in Indiaand
abroad, apart from many other unorganized retailers. The factthat most of these
brands are sports brands doesn’t come as asurprise because for quite a few
years now, sports accessories havebegun to be seen as fashionable and stylish.
People are no longerlooking for mere utility from such accessories – they want
tomake a fashion statement as well with these products.
Backpacks however, were not born as fashionable items. In fact, they were
originallymeant only for trekking and mountaineering and were even made
ofwood! But soon, a man named Asher Kelty, who can be called the‘Father of the
modern backpack’, realized that therewould be a huge market for a lighter and
more durable version of thebackpack then sold for mountaineers. His lightweight
backpack wasmade using nylon, lightweight aluminum tubing, padded shoulder
andwaist straps. Thus started the story of the evolutionof backpacks which have
now permeated the everyday life oftrekkers, kids, office goers and fashionistas
alike.

4. Does the element offashion at the Olympics surprise you? Well, get over
your surprise, because here is an interesting fact: besides scores of athletes
andsportspersons from all over the world, there are plentyof big designer
names involved in Olympics. It is not the mosttalked about sporting
competition for nothing. The team uniforms andcompetition outfits get as
much attention as the prowess of theathlete, especially at the Parade of
Nations in the opening ceremonyof the Games for the former. Designer
names like Christian Louboutin,Ralph Lauren, Simon Jersey and Stella
McCartney will also becompeting for glory at the Games.
For Great Britain, while Simon Jersey has designed the team uniform,
Stella McCartneyhas lent her hand to the Adidas sports outfits for the
athletes.USA’s flag bearer and celebrated swimmer Michael Phelps wore
anoutfit by Ralph Lauren. Lacoste, which is dressing up the Frenchteam,
presented a special spring/summer 2016 collection inspired byRio
Olympics, at Paris Fashion Week last year. The Olympic Games area great
opportunity for various brands to grab eyeballs at aninternational level,
and sports clothing has taken on a decidedlyfashionable twist in this
arena.
5. In his youth this manfrom Garur village in Uttarakhand mostly ran after stray cattle
athis parents’ hillside farm. He will now run the marathon at RioOlympics 2016. The
journey from the mountain side to the mecca ofsporting events was anything but easy
for the infantry Havaldar ofthe 6th Kumaon regiment, Nitendra Rawat. Ironically, the
mountainshad an important role to play in making him an athlete, andeventually
qualifying for the Olympic Games 2016. After being postedat Pakistan-occupied-
Kashmir because he was not up to the mark inperforming his duties as an army
sportsman, Rawat put all hisenergies at improving his sport because that was the only
way hecould be posted at a place where he could train and compete.
Hequalified for the Olympics at the World Military Games in Mungyeong,South Korea
by clocking 2:18:06 on the marathon. His training for Rio2016 has been intense and
fraught with difficulties, even though hehas remained optimistic and dedicated all
through it. At one point hewas even struggling to continue training because of lack of
qualitytraining equipment and accessories. He would wear out his shoes veryfast while
training and it would be too expensive for him to keepreplacing them at a personal cost.
This is where Myntra, India’slargest ecommerce company stepped in.
Myntra sponsoredhis sports equipment so that he could focus on training insteadof
worrying about money. His event at Rio will be held on August 21.Here’s wishing him
all the best.
