Global Day of Action for Burma
1. "Global Day of Action for Burma"
Nobel Peace Prize laureate Daw Aung San Suu Kyi is Burma’s most celebrated and beloved person in the
struggle for freedom in Burma. She has been under house arrest continuously since May 2003 and for a total of
more than 13 of the past 19 years.
She was supposed to be released from house arrest on the 27th of May. However, on May 13th, Daw Suu and
her two female colleagues were detained after an incident when an American citizen allegedly swam across Inya
Lake and stayed at her house for two days. Daw Aung San Suu Kyi has been charged under the regime’s Law
Safeguarding the State from the Dangers of Subversive Elements and is being held in the notorious Insein
Prison. Her trial is scheduled for May 18.
Her health has deteriorated recently due to the tight restrictions during her prolong detention. She has often
been denied access to her personal doctor, who also was arrested last Thursday at the time of his monthly visit.
Burmese democracy movement activists and supporters around the globe are planning a ‘Global Day of Action’
on May 18, 2008 to demand her release and the release of all political prisoners in Burma.
71 organizations from "Global Action for Burma" (http://gab-burma.weebly.com) will take part in this activity.
We invite all freedom loving supporters of Burma to join us in support of Aung San Suu Kyi and her struggle for
freedom and democracy in Burma.
We will hold demonstrations in front of the United States embassy and other embassies from democratic
countries, and the United Nations offices.
We request immediate intervention by the United States and other democratic governments around the
globe, the United Nations and International groups for immediate release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and
her fellow political prisoners. We strongly urge the democratic governments and the United Nations to
impose all available pressure on the junta to respect the desire of the international community.
(This is an independent campaign. Independence campaign is a results-oriented coalition
dedicated to Free Aung San Suu Kyi campaign to share information about the activities.)
We have compiled a list of activities organized by groups around the world. We will try to keep
the list updated.
