I apply Ranganathan's 5 laws of library science to altmetrics, as part of a holistic research impact support service. I discuss what altmetrics are, what they measure, their uses throughout the research lifecycle, and where you can get them. I then apply Ranganathan's 4th law, saving the time of the user, to the harvesting of altmetrics by research information systems, embedding them at the point of need. The challenge of altmetrics is to change our concept of what an institutional repository is, from a simple container of research outputs to a smart system that harvests and catalogs a much broader range of output and impact data elements.

Traditional bibliometric methods of evaluating academic research, such as journal impact factors and article citations, have been supplemented in the past 5-10 years by the development of altmetrics (alternative metrics or article level metrics). Altmetrics measures impact of research, data and publications, such as references in data and knowledge bases, article views, downloads and mentions in social media and news media. This presentation gives a brief background to altmetrics and demonstrates how Rhodes University librarians are using social media to raise the visibility of the research output of their institution. In the Indices of research series h index is discussed here. The h-index (sometimes called the Hirsch index or Hirsch number) is one of the several research indices which is used to measure the productivity and impact of of a researcher/ research group/ institution. It’s an index which increases on the basis of citations and number of papers continuously with the passage of time. It is the major benchmark used by the employers for selection/recruitment and/ or assessment of Researchers. This e-module will let you know all about the h index: What, How, Who, why......about h index will be answered here. In the very next video we will cover how to identify h index of a researcher in various platforms. As open access journals and repositories gain a foothold in scholarly communication, researchers are finding that the traditional impact factor and citation count metrics only reflect a portion of the dissemination of scholarly works. New technology, research, and citation tools aid our ability to measure the influence of research. A matrix of tools and initiatives, like PLoS Article-Level Metrics, BePress’ Author Dashboard, Mendeley, Altmetrics, and ImpactStory are providing a more robust picture of scholarly communication today. This presentation provides an overview of the impact factor system and new tools for gathering metrics and their relevance for librarians and researchers. Presentation given at the Library Information Technology Association (LITA) Forum in Louisville, KY, in November 2013.

Summaries and critiques are two ways to write a review of a scientific journal article. Both types of writing ask you first to read and understand an article from the primary literature about your topic. The summary involves briefly but accurately stating the key points of the article for a reader who has not read the original article. There are ten tips for reviewing scientific manuscripts and 5 red flags. The critique begins by summarizing the article and then analyzes and evaluates the author’s research. Summaries and critiques help you learn to synthesize information from different sources and are usually limited to two pages maximum.

How are Institutional Repositories (IRs) being used? We can get some clues from the kind of links made from the general web to IRs. Results will be presented from a project looking at the links made to the larger IRs in New Zealand; as well as three well established overseas IRs. The project examined whether links were the equivalent of formal citations, or whether they were informal links. Formal links comprised only 1.85% of the links, indicating that IRs may not be primarily forming part of the formal research communication structure. However informal links (largely from blogs and Wikipedia) comprised 18.2% of the links made to the IRs. Subject directory links comprised almost 50% of links. These results indicate that New Zealand IRs have a useful role in making research information available to the general public, even though they do not appear to be referred to intensively by other researchers.

This presentations reports on a systematic and comprehensive comparison of the coverage of the three major bibliometric databases: Google Scholar, Scopus and the Web of Science. Based on a sample of 146 senior academics in five broad disciplinary areas, we therefore provide both a longitudinal and a cross-disciplinary comparison of the three databases. Our longitudinal comparison of eight data points between 2013 and 2015 shows a consistent and reasonably stable quarterly growth for both publications and citations across the three databases. This suggests that all three databases provide sufficient stability of coverage to be used for more detailed cross-disciplinary comparisons. Our cross-disciplinary comparison of the three databases includes four key research metrics (publications, citations, h-index, and hI,annual, an annualised individual h-index) and five major disciplines (Humanities, Social Sciences, Engineering, Sciences and Life Sciences). We show that both the data source and the specific metrics used change the conclusions that can be drawn from cross-disciplinary comparisons.

Previous studies have found that papers with publicly available datasets receive a higher number of citations than similar studies without available data. In addition, new research has found that by putting your research data online, you’ll become up to 30% more highly cited than if you kept your data hidden. In this workshop I will elaborate the advantages of sharing research data and introduce some relevant “Research Tools” for increasing datasets visibility.

The Impact Factor is popularly viewed as a representation of a scholarly journal's quality and desirability for publication. But this metric is frequently misused, while other metrics more suitable to a goal may be overlooked. This presentation will help researchers understand the purpose of the Impact Factor, analyze its benefits and limitations, and evaluate available alternatives.

The annotated bibliography for your course is now due. The annotated bibliography should be about a page and must contain at least three research sources. Your annotated bibliography must be in APA format. For guidelines click the following link: Annotated Bibliography Example : ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY 1 APA 6 th Edition Guidelines: Annotated Bibliography An annotated bibliography is the full citation of a source followed by notes and commentary about a source. The word “annotate” means “critical or explanatory notes” and the word “bibliography” means “a list of sources”. Annotations are not the same as abstracts. Abstracts are purely descriptive summaries often found at the beginning of scholarly/ academic journal articles. Annotations are meant to be critical in addition to being descriptive. Format: The format for an annotated bibliography is similar to that of a research paper. Use one-inch margins on all sides, double-space your entries, and arrange each entry in alphabetical order. Hanging Indents are required for citations in the bibliography, as shown below. The first line of the citation starts at the left margin and subsequent lines of the citation will be indented. Example: Journal Article with DOI Calkins, S., & Kelley, M. (2007, Fall). Evaluating internet and scholarly sources across the disciplines: Two case studies. College Teaching , 55 (4), 151-156. doi:10.1111/j.1747- 7379.2007.00759.x This article discusses the problem of unintentional online plagiarism and many students’ inability to evaluate, critique, synthesize, and credit online sources properly. Two case studies from different disciplines, which were designed to foster critical evaluation of the Internet and scholarly sources, are discussed in detail. The CARS (Credibility, Accuracy, Reasonableness, Support) checklist for evaluating research sources is also introduced and applied in these case studies. I found this article useful because much of the content of these case studies can be easily adapted to fit assignments in different academic disciplines. One information literacy assignment in one quarter at college is not enough. If students are expected to use the Internet in a responsible way, educators must provide guidelines and relevant experience that allows students to apply those guidelines in practical ways. Updated 02/2010 ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY 2 For annotated bibliographies, use standard APA format for the citations, then add a brief entry, including: • 2 to 4 sentences to summarize the main idea(s) of the source. o What are the main arguments? o What is the point of this book/article? o What topics are covered? • 1 or 2 sentences to assess and evaluate the source. o How does it compare with other sources in your bibliography? o Is this information reliable? o Is the source objective or biased? • 1 or 2 sentences to reflect on the source. o Was this source helpful to you? o How can you use this source for your res.

The presentation explores the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) from its inception to its current status in the modern world. The term "artificial intelligence" was first coined by John McCarthy in 1956 to describe efforts to develop computer programs capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. This concept was first introduced at a conference held at Dartmouth College, where programs demonstrated capabilities such as playing chess, proving theorems, and interpreting texts. In the early stages, Alan Turing contributed to the field by defining intelligence as the ability of a being to respond to certain questions intelligently, proposing what is now known as the Turing Test to evaluate the presence of intelligent behavior in machines. As the decades progressed, AI evolved significantly. The 1980s focused on machine learning, teaching computers to learn from data, leading to the development of models that could improve their performance based on their experiences. The 1990s and 2000s saw further advances in algorithms and computational power, which allowed for more sophisticated data analysis techniques, including data mining. By the 2010s, the proliferation of big data and the refinement of deep learning techniques enabled AI to become mainstream. Notable milestones included the success of Google's AlphaGo and advancements in autonomous vehicles by companies like Tesla and Waymo. A major theme of the presentation is the application of generative AI, which has been used for tasks such as natural language text generation, translation, and question answering. Generative AI uses large datasets to train models that can then produce new, coherent pieces of text or other media. The presentation also discusses the ethical implications and the need for regulation in AI, highlighting issues such as privacy, bias, and the potential for misuse. These concerns have prompted calls for comprehensive regulations to ensure the safe and equitable use of AI technologies. Artificial intelligence has also played a significant role in healthcare, particularly highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic, where it was used in drug discovery, vaccine development, and analyzing the spread of the virus. The capabilities of AI in healthcare are vast, ranging from medical diagnostics to personalized medicine, demonstrating the technology's potential to revolutionize fields beyond just technical or consumer applications. In conclusion, AI continues to be a rapidly evolving field with significant implications for various aspects of society. The development from theoretical concepts to real-world applications illustrates both the potential benefits and the challenges that come with integrating advanced technologies into everyday life. The ongoing discussion about AI ethics and regulation underscores the importance of managing these technologies responsibly to maximize their their benefits while minimizing potential harms.

Created by Mozilla Research in 2012 and now part of Linux Foundation Europe, the Servo project is an experimental rendering engine written in Rust. It combines memory safety and concurrency to create an independent, modular, and embeddable rendering engine that adheres to web standards. Stewardship of Servo moved from Mozilla Research to the Linux Foundation in 2020, where its mission remains unchanged. After some slow years, in 2023 there has been renewed activity on the project, with a roadmap now focused on improving the engine’s CSS 2 conformance, exploring Android support, and making Servo a practical embeddable rendering engine. In this presentation, Rakhi Sharma reviews the status of the project, our recent developments in 2023, our collaboration with Tauri to make Servo an easy-to-use embeddable rendering engine, and our plans for the future to make Servo an alternative web rendering engine for the embedded devices industry.
