7. How Fractures Heal…… Unlike other things that may break in life, bones begin healing on their own before you even set foot in a waiting room. Occurs in three stages The first few days to weeks is called Stage I, or the Inflammatory Stage, of bone healing. This consists of bleeding, tenderness and swelling The Reparative Stage, or Stage 2, starts within a week or two and continues for many months. It consists of cells forming at the fracture site and turning into bone. Soft callus formation stage! The Remodeling Stage, (The last stage) continues for many months to a few years. It consists of weak bone material forming to strong bone material. Because this new material is so strong, you don't need a lot of it, and the body will remodel the fracture callus down to a normal sized bone.
