A thought about fitting larger sensor in a Micro Four Third camera mount.

1. Micro Four Third+ Concept for a branching from the Micro Four Third standard mount specification.

2. Background Micro Four Third specification: Sensor size: 17,3 x 13,0 mm Width 1,365x smaller than Nikon’s APS-C (23,6 x 15,6mm) Flange distance: 20mm Thread diameter: 38mm Common criticism: Relatively smaller sensor Inherently lower dynamic range Larger depth of field

3. Idea There is large area wasted on the inner side of the mount compared to sensor size (red). The space inside the mount can actually fits APS-C sized sensor. This will also utilize larger part of legacy lens image circle.

4. Problem Electronic contacts are located too close to the centre. This will get in the way of the image sensor. Electronic contacts have to be compatible with the specification for backward compatibility with lens designed for the original mount standard. Tight placing inside the mount might mean there will be vignetting near the corners. No warranty legacy lens image circle would actually cover the whole sensor

5. Idea Fit in larger image sensor. Flange distance stays the same. Contacts shifted downward out of the way. The camera is supplied with adapter to reroute the contacts. The adapter will cover part of the image sensor. Automatic algorithm to crop the image automatically and minimize vignette when using the original lenses (smaller image circle) Lower megapixel utilized. Also works for C-Mount lenses.

7. Electronic contacts will stay the same.

8. EVF concept will stay the same.

9. Sensor size will be bigger.

10. This will tempt makers to make m4/3 APS-C lenses and abandon the older standard except for certain kind of lenses.

11. Lens made for the new mount won’t be backward compatible due to the shift of the contacts position.

12. Due to the tight placement of the image sensor, IBIS might not be possible.
