2. Scope management
• Project scope – The work that must be
done in order to deliver a
project/product with the specified
features and functions
• Successful completion of project scope
is measured against the PM plan
4. Scope Planning
The aim of Scope Planning is to create the Scope
Management Plan, which describes how the project
team will perform each of the following:
• Define project scope
• Define and develop WBS
• Change Control
• Scope completion
6. Create WBS
• WBS-Work breakdown Structure
• WBS is a deliverable-oriented hierarchical
decomposition of the project work into work packages
• WBS organizes and defines the total scope of the
project
• A work package can be scheduled, cost estimated,
monitored, and controlled
7. Create WBS
• WBS templates – Use a WBS from a
previous project or a standard template
to develop a WBS for this project
8. Create WBS
• Decomposition – Subdividing major project
deliverables into smaller, more manageable components
until deliverables are defined in sufficient detail for
supporting future project activities
• Identify the deliverables and related work
• Structuring and organizing the WBS
• Decomposing the upper WBS levels into lower level detailed
components
• Verifying that the degree of decomposition of the work is
necessary and sufficient
9. Scope Change Control
• A formalized process that
– Identify client’s changes and incorporate them in
management plan and ultimately in WBS
– Identify package changes and manage their
impact
– Prevent unidentified scope creep/change by
recording changes
– Highlight potential gold plating
10. Scope Change Control (HIMS)
• Client Notification
• Change control
• Client notification of change register
• Work package management plan
• Verification plan
11. Scope Completion
• Process of formalizing stakeholders’
acceptance of the completed project scope
• Reviewing work products and results
• Primarily concerned with acceptance of the
work results
• Should be established even if the project is
terminated early

that has been occurring on past projects. All the
following would not be of use in controlling gold plating
EXCEPT:

required, to complete the project successfully. This is:
a time management.
b scope management.
c cost management.
d quality management.
17. Let us do an exercise
Which of the following tools and techniques are
commonly used in the Scope Definition Process?
a. Benefit / cost analysis
b. Decomposition
c. Inspection
d. WBS templates
e. b and d
