- School for unmarried children is elementary or secondary school—not college Disabled adult child under 22 Deceased worker’s former spouse doesn’t have to qualify age-wise if caring for child under 16 or who is disabled and entitled to benefits under deceased workers, e.g., DAC
- For children, there is a “deeming” of income from parent to child. TANF is not counted in deeming or in household income.
- Dependent kids—to age 18 or if in elementary or high school, to age 19 Some other benefits--DAC
- Often issue is no documentation re: functional impairment
- Look at functional abilities as compared to other children in age group; look at comparability of functioning
- Idea is that benefits alone won’t end homelessness, won’t help families to thrive, to believe in their possibility—but rather it’s income combined with listening, having relationships, believing that people know what helps---combining income (however inadequate) with what else it can bring—housing, services, supports—and, most importantly, hope
