Notes de l'éditeur
We have one of the largest varieties of scale-out, scale-up servers in the industry.
The Intel Xeon processor families are laid out here. The top of the offering are the E7 product family where the eX5 platforms are based. The x3750 M4 is based on the E5 product family to provide a dense 4-socket solution – the solution with the most flexibility and price for performance value proposition.
Sandy Bridge platform benefits: More Efficient: Higher performance, lower platform power More Intelligent: Improved power mgt across all components and utilization levels More Secure: Intel AES-NI improvements, and more robust Intel TXT solutions More Options: Optimized platforms for Performance, Smaller Form Factors, and/or best value
The E5-2600/2400 & E5-4600 series processors (all Sandy Bridge core based) do feature a dynamically shared LLC. Typically the size of the LLC is 2.5MB per core (for instance, an 8-core part has a 20MB LLC, a 6-core part has a 15MB LLC and so on). The core typically has affinity to its slice of the LLC… but this can be dynamically re-sized, allowing a core with a greater LLC need to request it. There is a correction below though: when a core (typically a core pair) is disabled in BIOS, its associated LLC remains available to the other cores to share, it is not lost.
Shown here is the Intel Xeon SKU stack for the E5-4600 product family. There are 3 bins, basic standard and advanced. The top of the SKU stack supports up to 8Cores with Turbo and Hyper-threading enabled. There are two specialty SKUs, a frequency optimized SKU and a power optimized SKU. The frequency optimized SKU will be important for platform computing workloads. As you move up the stack from basic to standard to advanced, there are different percent gains in performance. The chart shows a significant 25% performance gain from basic to standard, and compelling 11% performance gains towards the top of the SKU stack.
System x rack portfolio can be positioned on two key metrics: price for performance and high availability. The eX5 class of systems, such as the x3850 X5 or the x3690 X5, provide clients with the most RAS features, the ability to scale memory or processors, and with the highest level of performance. The x3650 M4 provides client with a very compelling general business 2-socket offering – optimizing price for performance. The x3750 M4 joins this part of the portfolio by offering a 4-socket solution. While the eX5 systems are intended for mission-critical workloads or workloads that require the maximum memory and scalability, this server is an entry 4-socket solution with price for performance in mind.
It’s a 4 socket server featuring a streamlined design, optimized for price/performance, with advanced flexibility and expandability. The x3750 M4 provides maximum storage density, flexible PCIe and 10GbE networking options in a sleek 2U form factor. Among it’s key features are: Support for the full Intel Xeon E5-4600 product family of processors. An unique 2+2 socket design that allows clients to start with 2 processors, 24 DIMMs, and option in an additional 2 sockets, and 24 DIMMs to reach the full 4-sockets and 48 DIMMs. Another key feature is the ability to mix and match SAS and SSD storage technologies. The x3750 M4 can hold up to 16 2.5” SAS/SATA hard disk drives, or 32 1.8” eXFlash solid state drives. From an i/o perspective, the server has 10GbE integrated on the base planar, and provides clients with the option to select either a fiber SFP+ or copper 10BaseT mezzanine card. These are dual port cards that plug into a dedicated slot – saving critical PCIe resources. Finally, the server supports up to 8 PCIe slots through 5 slots on the base planar, and an additional 3 slots from an optional riser card. While the x3750 M4 is a good platform for general business applications and scale out virtualization, it excels at 3 key workloads: High Performance Computing, Floating Point applications such as scientific or university, and as a consolidation platform for small to medium sized databases where fast I/O is key. We will get into more details on each of these workloads later in the module.
Within the new Romley-SandyBridge Intel Xeon architecture, many of the critical server functions are directly attached to CPU One. This includes memory, the SAS storage controller, the networking controller, the management controller, and PCIe slots. In the x3750 M4, CPU2 enables the base PCIe slots in addition to the memory attached to it. So clients can enable all of the server functions with the base 2-socket, 24-DIMM configuration. However, due to the Intel architecture, this makes CPU1 a potential major single point of failure. Don’t panic, this is an IBM server – designed with technology that overcomes the challenges of the base architecture. When CPU1 fails, communication and management to the platform is not lost. x3750 M4 features the ability to fail-over from CPU1 to CPU2 – in effect giving CPU2 full control of the server. So while competitor systems that see a failure on CPU1 will may stay down, x3750 M4 can reboot with CPU2 in control. Minimizing down-time. In order to take advantage of this feature, both CPU1 and CPU2 must have valid boot device paths. Also the system firmware uEFI boot order must be setup with CPU1 and then CPU2.
Shown here are the front and rear images of the x3750 M4. Starting with the top, front image of the server, and going left to right. The x3750 M4 supports a front-side video port and 2 USB 2.0 ports. The Light path panel is below these ports and pulls out by pressing the blue button. Below these is the optical bay which supports the SATA DVD drive. The server supports up to 16 2.5-inch hard disk drives, and up to 32 1.8” eXFlash SSDs. On the back of the server, there are 3 PCIe expansion slots the left side. These are enabled through an optional riser card. Below these slots, there is another video port, a serial port, the management port, and 2 x 1GbE ports. There are an additional 2 USB 2.0 ports next to the the riser. The x3750 M4 has 5 PCIe slots standard, and a dedicated slot for the 10GbE mezzanine solutions for copper or fiber. Finally, there are two hot swap power supplies to the right.
Going from left to right, or front to rear, the x3750 M4 storage is located at the front. You are able to mix and max the SAS and eXFlash technologies for maximum storage and ultimate performance. There are 6 hot-swap dual rotor fans located behind the storage backplanes. These fans can be individually removed, or the entire 6-fan tray can be removed. After the fans, you have the 24-DIMMs and 2-processor tray that sits on top of the base planar which has the other 24-DIMMs and 2-processors. This compact 2U design provides the ultimate level of density without compromising power and cooling efficiencies. On the base planar, after the DIMM slots, there is a 10GbE lan on mother board, or LOM. Towards the rear, you have the power supplies and PCIe slots.
The x3750 M4 has unique pay-as-you-grow features. It offers a 2+2 socket design which allows clients that need a 2-socket server today to upgrade to 4-sockets in the future as their workloads grow. This feature allows clients to add processing and memory power without having to deal with the cost and complexity of another separate server – saving time, saving resources, and saving infrastructure costs. As shown on the top, the processor memory tray can be easly removed and docked into the server. The server also features a 5+3 PCIe expansion solution. There are 5 base PCIe slots, and clients add a riser to gain an additional 3 PCIe slots. Once again, clients only pay for what they need and have the ability to add capability as they need it. Smarter Planet, Smarter Computing.
The x3750 M4 has advanced flexibility with the networking capabilities. In addition to the two 1 GbE ports standard on the server, the x3750 M4 has 10GbE enabled on the board. The x3750 M4 provides a dedicated slot to select either the 10Base-T dual port copper connectivity or the SFP+ fiber dual port connectivity. This is very critical. Over the next two years, clients will see the introduction of new 10GbE technologies, including new copper switches and high performance fiber switches. In addition, many clients already have invested in either copper or fiber in their networking infrastructure. By providing clients with the ability to select the type of technology that best fits their environment and future strategy, the x3750 M4 provides the ultimate level of flexibility – one that makes a difference at the bottom line. Once again, Smarter Computing for a Smarter Planet.
The x3750 M4 supports up to 48 DIMMs. 24-DIMMs are on the base planar, and another 24-DIMMs are on the processor memory tray. The x3750 M4 supports a maximum capacity of 1.5 terabyte with the 32GB LR-DIMM. The x3750 M4 supports RDIMM and LRDIMM technologies. The 4GB, and 8GB as RDIMMs. The 16GB is available as both an LR-DIMM and an RDIMM. The 32GB DIMMs are available as a load-reduced memory DIMM or LRDIMM. Enabling the 16GB LRDIMM is critical. It allows the ability to mix 16GB and 32GB capacities to give more granularity for larger workloads, as you cannot mix RDIMM and LRDIMM technologies. Also the LRDIMMs can drive performance using lower power 1.35V DIMMs to maximize power efficiency.
The x3750 M4 can support up to 16 2.5” hot-swap SAS or SATA Hard disk drives or up to 32 1.8” hot –swap eXFlash SSDs. On board SAS can support up to 16 2.5” HDDs using typical 4 or 8 drive backplane options. These options are common to other M4 platforms. One key option is an 8-drive plus controller backplane. This option allows clients to configure 8 drives on two different storage controllers, without requiring a storage adapter in a PCIe slot. The on-board SAS controller and the SAS controller on the backplane provide the server with the sufficient number of ports and the data protection that’s needed. Another key differentiation is the use of the IBM eXFlash technology. Clients can install up to 8 1.8” SSD drives in an eXFlash enclosure. The server supports up to 4 of these enclosures for a total of 32 SSD drives. These drives provide the server with high performance flash storage, while giving the client the ability to RAID across these drives for much needed data protection. Available in 50 GB and 200 GB capacities for up 6.4TB of flash storage in the server.
ExFlash is an integrated flash-memory based solid stage sotrage with highe speed disk controllers. It provides the server with a fast local cache that is hot-swappable and RAID protected. Only IBM delivers this technology. eXFlash delivers extreme internal storage capacity and performance. While providing the same level of performance as 800 spinning disks it only requires 1% of the power.
As data centers grow, power and cooling costs are becoming a larger piece of the IT budget. Nearly 3% of the total US electricity consumption in 2011 was due to data centers. The x3750 M4 leverages the unique IBM vectored cooling technology to provide the maximum level of performance without compromising on power and cooling efficiencies. The x3750 M4 has 6 independent fan modules, that support 5 thermal zones. Each zone will adjust fan speed based on the components and thermal conditions in that zone. This provides optimal temperature within the server without wasting energy. The choice of 2 redundant power supplies are 80PLUS platinum – providing 94% power efficiency design.

Another view of BladeCenter positioning The HS22 blade fits into one of the broadest and deepest blade portfolios available in the industry As you can see on the chart, the HS22 is positioned to to run a variety of workloads To the left of the HS22 is the HS12 which is our low-cost, entry blade To the right of the HS22 is our new virtualization optimized HS22V. To the right of the HS22V is our new scalable HX5 blade positioned for maximum virtualization performance We have a complete portfolio of blade servers to meet our customers needs.
Now let’s take a closer look at how HX5 delivers value to our customers: HX5 with MAX5 delivers 25% more memory capacity than any server in it’s class. Resulting in optimal server utilization for memory constrained applications. More memory also allows customers to run more, larger virtual machines per servers and results in greater database throughput. For customers looking for maximum performance, HX5 offers compute capacity of up to 32 CPU cores with the 4S blade. This not only provides blazing fast performance, it also enables customers save on system costs by getting most out of their licensing costs where SW is priced by servers or # of CPUs. For memory limited apps, more apps just doesn’t cost another server….. Smaller DIMMs HX5 delivers faster time to value for our clients. Since it is built from the same 2S base blade, customers have to qualify a single platform for 2-socket to 4-socket server needs, which will allow them to standardize on a single system and deliver faster time to value. The image customers develop for a 2S HX5 system, will essentially work on all other scaled HX5 systems. In today’s IT environment management has been isolated and disjointed and this causes a lot of pain for customers. First, decisions or changes in the environment are made in a vacuum. The networking, compute, and storage guys make decisions independently, particularly when they have support issues. The relationships between these decision are getting lost in the management silos. We are not trying to take control away from any one of the components of the system, but rather help drive better decision making across the entire system and the workloads they are supporting. PureFlex will provide customers a single point of control that can be tailored to their administrative structure. The same tool can provide a window to manage just compute nodes/storage/networking/or all components in a single view. PureFlex will do this provide tight integration to downstream tools that are required in the data center, creating a unified management stack and single entry point into the discrete tools. This will help bring new employees on board faster, retrain existing resources quicker, and most importantly get to the end of task much more effectively.

Main Point: The time has come for a new breed of systems. Expert integrated systems are systems with integrated expertise that combine the flexibility of a general purpose system, the elasticity of cloud and the simplicity of an appliance tuned to the workload – fundamentally changing the experience and economics of IT. Speaker Notes: The time has come for a new class of systems: systems with integrated expertise and built for cloud that combine the flexibility of general purpose system, the elasticity of cloud and the simplicity of an appliance Expert integrated systems will fundamentally change both the experience and economics of IT. Expert integrated systems are more than a static stack of self-tuned components—a server here, some database software there, serving a fixed application at the top. Instead, these systems have three truly unique attributes. The first is built-in expertise. Think of expert integrated systems as representing the collective knowledge of thousands of deployments, established best practices, innovative thinking, IT industry leadership, and the distilled expertise of business partners and solution providers. Captured into the system in a deployable form from the base system infrastructure through the application. The second is that expert integrated systems are integrated by design. All the hardware and software components are deeply integrated and tuned in the lab and packaged in the factory into a single ready-to-go system that is optimized for the workloads it will be running.. All of the integration is done for you, by experts. The third is that the entire experience is much simpler – from the moment you start designing what you need to the time you purchase – to setting up the system – to operating, maintaining and upgrading it over time. Management of the entire system of physical and virtual resources is integrated. And all this is done in an open manner enabling participation by a broad ecosystem of partners to bring their industry optimized solutions to bear.
Title options: 1) And traditional lines of separation are blurring/vanishing 2) And integration is launching new opportunities (US) Smartphones now represent 1 in 4 subscribers, compared to 1 in 10 just two years ago. Source: http://www.onlinemarketing-trends.com/2011/02/us-msmartphone-vs-non-smartphone-user.html Nielsen report that 31% of US mobile phone owners have a smartphone as of December 2010, and expect smartphones to become the majority by the end of 2011. eMarketer predicts that smartphone ownership will reach 43% of the US mobile population by 2015. According to figures for 2010 released by Gartner, smartphones accounted for 297 million (19%) of the 1.6 billion mobile phones sold that year. That's 72.1% more smartphone sales than in 2009. The same company expects US sales of smartphones to grow from 67 million in 2010 to 95 million in 2011, and become the highest-selling consumer electronic device category. For Q4 2010, the IDC Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker puts smartphone sales at 100.9 million, up some 87% over Q4 2009. They report total smartphone sales for 2010 as 302.6 million, up around 74% on 2009. The Coda Research Consultancy predict global smartphone sales of some 2.5 billion over the 2010-2015 period, and also suggest that mobile Internet use via smartphones will increase 50 fold by the end of that period. Morgan Stanley Research estimates sales of smartphones will exceed those of PCs in 2012. Gartner expect over 500 million smartphones to sell in 2012.
